2017/08/06* ①② With the Border Run done it was time to make tracks home. I'd snapped the eastern end sign two days earlier so when I saw the western end I stopped for a picture. These green distance marker signs pop up every five kilometres but this is the only time I have seen one dedicated to an entire state. . ③④ Fast forward two years and I was on my way to another Border Run. I'd left Ceduna in the dark and was already at Nullabor Roadhouse just on sunrise. . ⑤～⑨ Again on the following day I'd stop at the western end sign. This time I'd veer off the highway to check out the Head Of Bight whale centre. I saw quite a few whales on the day. . ⑩ Today's Indian Pacific snippet comes from near Denman, which I am guessing is a now defunct old railway town in modern day Nullabor. The video is sped up 1·5 times. This first photo is one I edited to hide the location to play in the Ozstoc forum's Where Is This game thread. I had to go through quarantine to get here on the bike. . ④ The fourth photo is from my afternoon walk where that wasn't an issue. I'd parked the bike up for the night by this time. 2017/08/05* ①～⑧ Lookout three of the Great Australian Bight along the Eyre Highway at Nullabor. I've touched the colors of these up after the originals were all 'white' but they still look awful. . ⑨ Fortunately I'd come back two years later and take some better ones. This is probably the worst of the 2019 trip though. . ⑩ This Indian Pacific snippet is from Cook where the train stops for lunch or breakfast and gives the punters a chance to look at the now deserted town. I did some google mapping on it yesterday after making the lookout one and two posts and found out it's actually closer to the Nullabor Roadhouse than it is Border Village roadhouse. 2017/08/05 ①～④ I think almost everyone who passes this sign gets a photo of it at least once. My wife didn't believe me when I said I was going to camel territory so I duly emailed it to her. The grid in the road is to prevent them from migrating east. . 2019/08/03 ⑤⑥ Two years on and back out here in some ungodly hour of the morning. A short time later the bike's outside temperature said -6ºC and I am kicking myself for not getting a photo of it. I was feeling it and had no intention of taking my hands off the grip warmers. . 2019/08/04 ⑦～⑩ On the way back to Adelaide I popped into the site of the old Yalata Roadhouse. It was a vandalized ruin when I went through here in 2017 but demolished and taken away by the time I came back in 2019. The big boomerang that sat on its roof is now in the Yalata community three kilometres to the north. 2017/08/05 ①～④ Penong claims to have Australia's biggest windmill, although I am pretty sure I saw a sign making a similar claim in Jerilderie, New South Wales. On looking at those photos I think the Penong one is bigger. . Apparently this one is called Bruce. I only know that because after making yesterday's Penong post I clicked on the location and looked at other people's photos of Penong and a few said that. Usually after I have made the morning's posts I click on the locations and look at other people's photos from the same location, and find out what I missed, then put it down for a future trip. After refueling I went in to pay and the console operator asked me how I was. I said "top of the world". It's my standard answer. I didn't see much myself. . 2019/08/02 ⑤～⑧ Two years on I didn't leave the highway exepct to use the conrete crappa (slang for toilet) at the rest area. It is a functioning toilet. 2017/08/04 ①～⑦ When I first saw the 'halfway across Australia" sign at Kimba I thought it was factually correct. After all, I'd seen a sign in Akashi, Japan saying it's line of longitude was Japan's time zone actual time. Now that is correct. . However, if Kimba's was correct it wouldn't be the first time I crossed that line of longitude on the Birdseye Highway in 2015 and somewhere on the Lincoln or Flinders Highway further south. I never saw a sign like that for them then. So when I got home I did some calculations and worked out mainland Australia's true halfway mark would be west of Ceduna. I did send Kimba council an email asking them to clarify but never got a response. It's one of two councils that never replied to me. Also, to the west of here somewhere I must have exited the unincorporated area but never saw a sign to that effect. . 2019/08/02 ⑧～⑩ Between my Border Runs of 2017 and 2019 the silo at Kimba got silo art. It's one of only a handful where the sun doesn't get in the way of a good photo. The Big Galah has also been repainted. 2024/01/26* ⑩ The straight run home continued with me passing through Tailem Bend and another opportunity to dig out Old Tailem Town archives.. . ①～⑨ These are from a 'garage' there. The sign predates decimal and metric with pounds and miles although to me the interest was more with long gone brand names. In recent times Caltex have revived the old Ampol name but Golden Fleece was before my time here. I have heard of it though. Plume I have never heard of, but see old signs around the traps - mostly at Perrys service stations and roadhouses. . More recent events have me intrigued. A couple of weeks ago someone at work said Caltex had bought out Shell and I have noticed almost all the suburban Shell service stations I know (except West Lakes) have now been refurbished to Caltex Techron livery. . The intriguing part is the rural Perrys roadhouses. They used to be all BP until a couple of years ago when they switched to a combination of Shell and Mobil. Are the Shell ones now displaying Caltex? 2024/01/26* I'd spotted what appeared to be the old Coombe railway station on my previous ride though here (christmas/new years break) and decided I'd check it out this time. Alas, I turned one street too soon and ended up on the edge of the Ngarkat Conservation park instead. . To be honest I knew I'd made a wrong turn as soon as I crossed the railway line and there was no left bend but said sod it, let's check it out. The books are probably outdated now but probably worth being preserved/looked after rather than sitting here collecting dust. . The typewriters remind me of being in high school. We had to choose electives and I didn't get one of my choices of woodwork and being dumped with typing instead. My friend thought that was hilarious until he went home to find he didn't get woodwork either, and was dumped with sewing. Ironically I'd work as a 型枠大工 in the future. I don't know how to say in English, but something along the lines of "framework carpenter". I remember passing the Jaffle King and Karvery in 2014 and thinking "King Oath" would be a good username for the Footballnews forum. When I were heading out this way with the family the wife said we should stop somewhere for breakfast and I thought "I know a place". . ③～⑤ Australia Day 2016 and 2017. . ⑥ Wee hours of the morning in march 2019. I'd attended the South Australian Ozstoc Ride To Eat in Robe the night before and was now making a dash to Victoria's in Lorne, becoming the first member to attend two RTEs in two states in less than twenty four hours. . ⑦ At the big hand of the previous post I noticed the Sena Prism Tube camera had stopped recording. It had drained the power bank (a smaller one which runs the Mobius camera when I use it. It makes sense but I guess recording video uses more power that time lapse photos. I also changed the memory card here but got home to find out it had recorded nothing. I should have formatted the card as it turns out there's a difference between FAT and Exfat. I know that now. . ⑧ I rode past and noticed the Jaffle King store is now the Chook House. 2023/12/28* ①② Lesson learned from my Boxing Day trip was that google maps won't let me import a gpx file that's more than 5MB and as a consequence learned the difference between one of those (blue on the map) and a kml file (red on the map). Gps Logger creates both. The Honda just the one. The blue portion I traversed both way on this day, and the red in a counter clockwise loop. . ③～⑧ Some more from the archives. This is was the last day of my Queensland trip of 2017. I'd come back through here from Wynarka and was probably my first visit into 'town' and the old railway station. Trains still pass through here but I don't think they stop. . ⑨⑩ The whispering dish out the front of Old Tailem Town. I didn't test it because I came here alone. 2023/12/09* ③～⑦ If I can avoid it I try not to backtrack on my trips but I had to take the same Princes Highway through Poltalloch if I was going to get to Langhorne Creek in time for lunch. I didn't stop at the Pink Lake as I have done so in the past and the weather was awful. . ⑧～⑩ Earlier in the day. As the sign says, Poltalloch Road has no through route to Goolwa. Technically all the barges hopping the islands are traversable by vehicle, but they're not open to the public. That doesn't mean I don't want to ride them. . ①② These days there's not a lot in Poltalloch besides the lighthouse but this building was a dressmaker there once. These days it resides as part of Old Tailem Town. That has both negative and positive reviews but I must admit I enjoyed it. I spent a good few hours there and took 300+ photos including these.
