Hier bin ich auch zum ersten Mal auf den „Blauen Heinrich“ als Taschenflasche für Hustende aufmerksam geworden. 🔵 Erfindung „Blauer Heinrich“: Der Erfinder dieses praktischen Hilfsmittels war Peter Dettweiler, der 1876 die Leitung der neu gegründeten Lungenheilanstalt Falkenstein im Taunus übernahm und sich dort für die Etablierung der Liegekur Verdienste erwarb. 1889, nur wenige Jahre nach der Erstbeschreibung der Tuberkulosebazillen durch Robert Koch, stellte er auf dem 8. Kongress für Innere Medizin in Wiesbaden das von ihm entwickelte Fläschchen vor. Es wurde für 1,50 ℳ vertrieben. Emil von Behring, Robert Koch, Paul Ehrlich, Rudolf Virchow.. Gerade in den letzten 150 Jahren hat die Medizin riesige Sprünge gemacht. Lavorando sul decorso patologico dell’antrace, Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch (Clausthal-Zellerfeld, 11 dicembre 1843 – Baden-Baden, 27 maggio 1910) dimostrò che proprio un bacillo era la causa della patologia, stabilendo una diretta correlazione tra microrganismi e malattie. Individuò inoltre le spore, prodotte dai bacilli, capaci di resistere in condizioni avverse e di riprodurre bacilli al ripristino di condizioni più favorevoli: questo gli permise di spiegare il fenomeno dell’infettività a distanza di tempo. Nominato membro dell’Ufficio imperiale di igiene di Berlino nel 1880, si trasferì in quella città dove continuò i suoi studi e introdusse innovazioni fondamentali relative alla preparazione dei terreni di coltura, alla tecnica microscopica, ai processi di colorazione dei germi e ai metodi di riproduzione fotografica dei preparati. Il 24 marzo 1882 riuscì a evidenziare per la prima volta il bacillo della tubercolosi, poi chiamato in suo onore bacillo di Koch. Per questa scoperta seguì una procedura dalla quale, sebbene non esplicitati, si possono trarre i cosiddetti postulati di Koch, ossia le condizioni da rispettare per poter affermare che un particolare bacillo causa una determinata malattia. 🙂 2024 March 24 WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY "Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch" [11 December 1843- 27 May 1910], was a German physician and microbiologist. As the discoverer of the specific causative agents of deadly infectious diseases including tuberculosis, cholera and anthrax, he is regarded as one of the main founders of modern bacteriology. As such he is popularly nicknamed the father of microbiology (with Louis Pasteur, and as the father of medical bacteriology. His discovery of the anthrax bacterium (Bacillus anthracis) in 1876 is considered as the birth of modern bacteriology. Koch used his discoveries to establish that germs "could cause a specific disease" and directly provided proofs for the germ theory of diseases, therefore creating the scientific basis of public health, saving millions of lives. W marcu 1882 roku Robert Koch wyizolował zarazek gruźlicy, nazwany później prątkiem Kocha. Początek końca, choć z gruźlicą na dobrą sprawę poradziły sobie dopiero antybiotyki (streptomycyna, 1944). Gruźlica również dziś prowadzi do śmierci: w 2020 roku w Polsce zmarły na nią 474 osoby, czyli 1,2 na 100 tysięcy. Oczywiście, to dużo, dużo mniej niż kiedyś. W tym samym roku na całym świecie zmarło 1,5 miliona osób. “Pracowano do 15 godzin na dobę w kurzu i pyle. W powietrzu unosiły się także prątki, panował bowiem powszechny zwyczaj plucia na podłogę. Stwarzało to niezwykle podatne warunki do szerzenia się infekcji gruźliczych. Dziewczęta, które w wieku 12-15 lat podejmowały pracę w fabryce, w wieku 21 lat z reguły zapadały na czynną gruźlicę z masywnymi krwotokami płucnymi”. W roku 1910 w Łodzi odnotowano 389 zgonów na 100 tysięcy mieszkańców, co oznaczało przynajmniej cztery zgony dziennie. Dla porównania - na 100 tysięcy mieszkańców w Warszawie odnotowano 246 zgonów, w Moskwie 222, w Berlinie 189, a w Londynie 147. W latach 1892-1906 liczba zgonów w Warszawie oscylowała pomiędzy 22 a 28 na dziesięć tysięcy mieszkańców, w latach 1910-1914 umierało tam na gruźlicę przeciętnie 312 osób na 100 tys. mieszkańców. Mary Mallon was an Irish cook who was imprisoned for life for not washing her hands properly prior to preparing food. Mallon, an immigrant often referred to as “Typhoid Mary” unknowingly spread typhoid as she did not see a need to wash her hands frequently. Everywhere Mallon worked, people became sick or died which eventually lead to her apprehension. In 1882, the German physician Robert Koch had published a paper proving that microorganisms transmit disease. This discovery gave birth to microbiology. In 1907, New York City, United States of America sanitary expert George Soper had tracked the typhoid outbreak down to Mallon. Suspecting Mallon was immune to the disease but still a carrier, Soper pleaded with Mallon to be tested, however Mallon refused, and angrily chased Soper off with a dining fork. After being visited by the health board of New York City, Mallon found herself under quarantine where she remained for 3 years until she swore an affidavit to never work as a cook again. 5 years afterwards, another outbreak of typhoid occurred, this time traced back to Mary Brown, however Brown was Mallon working under an assumed identity. Today’s cultural adventure was a micro tour by @bbtoursberlin focusing on “Berlin Charité: 300 years in sickness and health”, and it was perfect, combining two of the areas where I love to geek out: Berlin and medical history. The amount of Nobel prize winners connected to Charité is impressive, and of course we met in front on the Robert Koch Memorial. I can really recommend this tour for those who want to dive deeper (the company has several tours spanning a multitude of subjects - you bet I’m doing them all) into the stories behind places and names that you’ve seen or heard, but rarely really noticed. Our guide Martina was a well of knowledge. I loved it! As a bonus it was warm, clearly inducing spring feelings and god knows I am in dire need of spring now. No, I’m in need of spring YESTERDAY. Wusstet ihr, dass Robert Koch ein passionierter Schachspieler war? Zumindest hat er sich auf langen Schiffsreisen diesem Spiel gewidmet. Dies belegt ein Brief, der im RKI-Archiv aufbewahrt wird. An seine zweite Frau Hedwig schrieb er am 6. Januar 1905 an Bord des Reichspostdampfers „Markgraf“: „Da es mir an zusagender Lectüre fehlt, so habe ich mich wieder ein wenig nach Schachspielern umgesehen und auch ein halbes Dutzend gefunden, von denen einer sogar sein eigenes Spiel mit sich führt. Sie sind sämmtlich jämmerlich unterlegen und ich muss den einen und den anderen einmal gewinnen lassen, wenn ich sie überhaupt noch zum Spielen bekommen will.
