An abandoned bald-faced hornet’s nest! I think it is so beautiful. 🐝 A tree fell across a path on the island sometime earlier this week and this nest was high up in the tree, now it is visible at eye level just off the trail. Lots of trees have been falling on the island recently. There is an infestation of emerald ash borer beetles and they slowly weaken and kill trees which then easily fall over after heavy rains and wind. At times National Park Service employees have closed off sections of the island to clear the dead trees so that they don’t pose a risk to visitors. #FindYourPark #JHUMuse

*Tuning Fork Challenge* Theodore Roosevelt Island! Located on the Potomac River, this is an 88 acre island dedicated to the conservationalist and outdoorsman, President Theodore Roosevelt. It was initially known as Barbados island and was purchased by George Mason in 1717, after which it was called Mason Island. It was finally known as Roosevelt island in 1967 when the Theodore Roosevelt Association built a memorial honoring the president. Over the years, this island has been used a training camp for the infantry during the Civil War and as a test site for private experiments including ignition of dynamite amongst other things! Fun fact- for Marvel Fans, this island was the site of the SHIELD headquarters in Captain America: The Winter Soldier! Today, the island is a great place for our residents to escape the city for short runs and hikes. For those who don’t have a car, there’s a walkway from the Rosslyn metro that leads you to the island! You can hike through the trails for beautiful views of the water or Georgetown or simply sit and enjoy the fresh air by the reflecting pools.
