Clinical Trial Month 5 visit 🏥 We are half way through our month 5 clinic visit at @rchmelbourne today. One more blood test to go in a few hours! And I have spent the morning reflecting on how smoothly these trial visits are now. That first, 11 hour ‘Month 1 Day 1’ visit was so hard - getting Hudson through all the medical assessments, getting him to take this new medicine (from memory it took 30 mins to get it all into him) and then all the multiple blood tests. After we got home and got him to bed I balled my eyes out in the kitchen, wondering if we were doing the right thing signing him up to a clinical trial that he couldn’t himself choose to do yet, feeling that weight of responsibility as his mum for him having to go through any of these challenges in the first place. But for anyone else starting a similar journey with their little ones, let me tell you now it gets SO MUCH EASIER! Hudson breezed through all his assessments, blood test and medicine dosage this morning. He was happy and chatty with the wonderful RCH team, and I was close to tears a number of times - both from how proud I am of him, but also just the relief of knowing these visits aren’t something hard we are ‘putting him through’ to get the benefit of this trail. We’ve seen the benefits of this trial in the huge increase in protein Hudson has had just in the last three months. But it’s such a bonus to have a really positive experience when visiting the hospital! Today’s small trip to the Royal Children’s 🦋❤️🐠 Went on a walk down to the children’s to go see some fish and to also go on a mini shopping spree as they have great gift shops and of course maccas. It was nice to finally be around some colour and to get out of this dull environment. I did spend wayy to much money but hey it’s for my ‘emotional’ wellbeing. The fish were pretty awesome but sadly I could not see any meerkats so they must have been put away or being fed or something. I haven’t been to the children’s since I was 18 and I had spent more time there throughout my childhood than I did home so it was also a trip down memory lane. Second full day of recovery: Arlo’s epidural is working well on his left side but he has patchy coverage on his right side, which means he has a lot more pain on his right side. His body position has to be moved every two hours which is very painful, but it is important. It is also a hard process as we have to keep his hips stable and no pressure on his ankles. Although with a lot of pain we managed to lift him into a wheelchair today and take him for a small walk. This needs to be done twice a day from 30mins and increasing it to 1-2 hours as time goes by. Emotions and anxiety have been high over the past 24 hours, but Arlo’s surgery went well and he is now in recovery on the “Platypus” ward. He was in theatre for 4 hours, with the longest portion being a Femoral Osteotome on both legs, which involves cutting and separating the top of the femur and fixing it in a new position with metal plates. He is on some pretty strong pain relief at the moment, including an epidural, and the physio team are working on getting him out of bed. For the past few years I’ve had the honour and privilege in joining the @melbournecostumegroup in being a part of the Kids Day Out Good Friday Appeal charity event for the Royal Children’s Hospital. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I know I haven’t posted in quite a while but I wanted to share one of the important days of the year that holds a special place in my heart and is close to home for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a baby my brother @julianmpillirone suffered from severe eczema, he had to be bandaged most of the time and was in and out of the Royal Children’s Hospital for the first 5 years of his life. My parents had to anxiously make sure he didn’t have any chance of getting infections as it would have been life threatening. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward 34 years later my brother and I have the opportunity to give back to the wonderful people and staff by doing what we love as cosplayers, bringing joy to the kids and helping raise funds for the hospital. We, and the community are extremely grateful for @rchmelbourne for everything they’ve done, not only for my brother but for so many sick and vulnerable children and their families and carers over the many years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This year the community has generously raised another record breaking amount of $23,368,724 for the @goodfridayappeal 💜💚 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you to all the volunteers for their amazing effort and to everyone who donated to achieve this! It’s Good Friday Appeal day again, and it’s not too late to donate! 🐣💜🌸🐇🥕 . Each year we say thank you and express our never ending gratitude for the extraordinary staff and unreal facility that is the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne - that cared for, and continues to provide such amazing care for Leo + Jimi. . This time last year we were about to head back for the first of two major micro-surgeries for each of our boys. Today, Leo + Jimi have had those four surgeries between them and are recovering and waiting for nerves to grow and mend together before they start working. What these surgeries entailed and what the surgeons have done is honestly mind blowing! . Just as important as the treatment, is that the experiences our boys have had at RCH over the years has had a positive impact on them. They aren’t afraid of hospital, they go off to surgery without any major fears or tears, knowing at even their young ages - that they are in the best possible hands. 🫶🏻 . Despite undergoing major surgery and looking like they’d done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson they’ll tell you, “it really wasn’t that bad”. The worst part for them is the no contact sport for 6 weeks. 🥴 They should have sent us home with sedatives for this bit! 😝 . We will be forever grateful for the lifesaving treatment Leo received as a baby and for the continued care and treatment of our boys. . Give for the kids- The RCH good Friday appeal is today. So grateful for this hospital- we are so lucky to have it on our doorstep. I can’t count the number of times we have been there but I can remember & every time I think how lucky we are to have such a wonderful hospital close by. Growing up we watched the appeal religiously on TV every Good Friday with hot cross buns & chocolate eggs. I never dreamed I would have a child that needed their help. This hospital saved Albas life in October 2022 when she experienced infantile spasms- if it wasn’t for the treatment she received she wouldn’t be here today. It was also where we reunited as a family when we flew back from the UK We were there a few weeks ago when Alba was having trouble breathing. Two nights on oxygen & iv fluids- turns out another case of RSV. Can’t thank the doctors & nurses enough for taking such good care (of all Of us) If you can donate to this wonderful cause please Give for the kids- Give what you can! Not everyone can afford to donate out of their household budget right now, however there are many ways you can help the @goodfridayappeal, both today and in future 😊 Some of them are: 1. Create and/or share a fundraiser - you may not be in the position to give right now, but someone else who sees it may be 😊❤️ 2. The next time you return your bottles and cans to a Container Deposit Scheme location, select the option on the machine to donate the returns to a charity or community group - the Good Friday Appeal is on there. 3. Have a garage sale and donate the proceeds instead. 4. Encourage your kids school to host a fundraiser. Many businesses will donate prizes knowing the funds are going to charity. 5. Create a ‘giving’ money jar. Pick a coin (example 20 cent pieces or all silver coins), and whenever anyone in the family receives that coin in change, it goes into the money box to be donated once full. 5. If you have a business, have a collection container or have the option of an add on item, donation or round up where those proceeds are given. 6. Set aside some of the money saved on deals / bargains. It could be the saving received from using a fuel lock, or from surprisingly getting the item you wanted on sale or markdown. 7. Donate what you can. This could feel like it’s “too little” or “not enough to help”, but it all adds up 😊 I’ve never included a fundraiser in any of my posts, but I have one attached to this. There’s no obligation to donate, it’s there if anyone wants to donate or share 😊 As you can see from the second pic, we have used the Royal Children’s Hospital for our daughter, so I just wanted to help. Whether you are there for ED, a short stay or long term FF like our warriors, this is the hospital you need & want. Without the expertise we would not have our amazing, brave & thriving warriors with us today. There is literally an army of teams in this hospital, but these are the ones that have been a major part of both kids care & treatment; its not just the incredible specialists & amazing nurses, it is the ED, ICU, Gastro, Neurology, Cardiology, Opthamolgy, ENT, Dentistry, Vaccination,Pathology, X-ray/Imaging teams. The medical teams are so incredibly well supported by the admin team in clinics & on the wards, play therapists, mental health team, day unit, education team, hospitality, cleaners, pastoral teams, starlight room, social workers & volunteers. There is so many more teams but this is enough for us to juggle. Butterfly boy Jacob Burmeister 2, has a rare disease called recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa that causes his skin to become extremely fragile like butterfly wings.
