Nature's Museum 🌳 The #sacredforest of #mawphlang - moss-covered stone in the #khasi dialect is situated in the East Khasi Hills in #meghalaya aka Lawkyntang - #sacredgrove One of the oldest & most sacred groves spread across 193 acres, with an abundance of flowering & medicinal plants, trees, mushrooms, birds, & insects. The forest is safeguarded by members of the Lyngdoh clan & is believed to be the abode of the Khasi deity, Labasa, who is said to protect the clan & the village from all harm. You are instantly awestruck by the scenic beauty of the lush green meadows stretching out far & wide (did a Maria from the movie the sound of music), with the woods tucked away in a corner. Sacrificial rituals were performed inside the forest. It is believed that if a leopard appeared, it was an auspicious sign & the ritual could be carried out. However, if a snake appeared, it was considered inauspicious, & the ritual would be abandoned. Wildlife sightings are rare, but the forest is said to be inhabited by toads, foxes, snakes, squirrels, wild cats, & several bird species. The only rule of the forest is that you are forbidden to take anything from here, not even a leaf! There are tales of people who have broken this taboo, have fallen ill & even died. In fact, local lore states that in 1970, the army tried taking out dead wood & trees, but they were unable to do so as their truck didn't start even after multiple tries. It is a 30-minute walk inside the forest, you can enter only with a guide. Charges are 50 rupees per person. We ended our walk with hot tea, biscuits & pawsome company! Mawphlang Sacred Forest- this forest is one of the oldest and most famous sacred groves of Meghalaya, harbouring a diversity of flowering and medicinal plants, trees, mushrooms, birds and insects. The forest is situated in the village of Mawphlang – meaning ‘moss-covered stone’ in Khasi – which is amongst the numerous settlements named after monoliths. The Mawplhang sacred forest belongs to the Khasi people who believe that a deity, Labasa, administers these woods and that nothing can be taken or left in this place. It also has several monoliths that were used for rituals in the past. The rhododendrons were starting to bloom. 🔮 Magia popolare 🔮 “Quando la festa di Imbolc è passata, la volpe non darebbe credito nemmeno alla sua coda sul ghiaccio”. Questo antico proverbio scozzese ci parla del periodo di Imbolc che coincide con il 1 febbraio, periodo a metà tra il solstizio d’inverno e l’equinozio di primavera, ed è festa celtico/gaelica che celebra la luce che torna a splendere piu vigorosa con l'arrivo della primavera. Luce, sole, calore che tornano iniziano a far assottigliare il ghiaccio sui laghi rendendo pericoloso camminarci sopra e Sionnach la Volpe saggiamente non si azzarda a sfiorarli nemmeno con la coda. L'astuzia e la cautela della volpe erano tenute in grande considerazione in passato e nessuno si sarebbe mai azzardato a camminare su un lago ghiacciato senza averlo visto fare prima ad una di queste scaltre creature. Per i celti era uno degli animali più intelligenti della foresta, uno spirito silenzioso tra gli alberi, conoscitore di tutti i loro segreti, ed era chiamata Sionnach. I druidi stessi si affidavano alle volpi per seguire sentieri a loro sconosciuti sapendo che, dietro al loro passo leggero, non si sarebbero mai persi ed avrebbero appreso tutti i misteri del bosco e delle creature che lo abitavano. Sionnach la Volpe era anche considerata simbolo di femminilità e custode di importanti segreti magici, custode di misteri in grado di viaggiare liberamente tra il mondo dei vivi e quello degli spiriti.
