You don't have to be on the mesa to see colorful CA native blooms. The sandier coastal strand/sand dune area has vibrant beach evening primrose (Camissoniopsis cheiranthifolia) and pink or purple sand verbena (Abronia umbellata)! Both grow prostrate to the ground and are important plants for stabilizing the sand. The evening primrose grows from a central crown outward with fuzzy gray-green leaves with yellow four-petal flowers that open in the morning. The pink sand verbena has more succulent like leaves and the flowers can range in color from pink to lilac-purple with white centers. Bolsa Chica also has red sand verbena (Abronia maritima) but it is less common. Today, as thousands of birds migrate to Bolsa Chica’s nesting sites to bring their next generation to life, we mourn the passing of a woman who worked for decades to ensure that these little birds will always have a home at Bolsa Chica. Shirley Dettloff one of the founding members of the Amigos de Bolsa Chica passed away this morning, leaving a historic legacy which includes tireless advocacy for the protection of Bolsa Chica’s wetlands. Shirley’s dedication to protecting Bolsa Chica was a lifelong commitment, for which we all are deeply grateful. Purple flowers are quite striking against the plethora of yellow flowers at Bolsa Chica. The three main types on the mesa are lupines, purple owl's clover (Castilleja exserta), and Western blue eyed grass (Sisyrinchium bellum). Arroyo lupine (Lupinus succulentus) and bi-colored or miniature lupine (Lupinus bicolor) are the two main lupine species here. Miniature lupine is very small, one of the smallest in Orange County. Arroyo lupine is much more common and showy reaching up to 2ft tall. Both are annuals. Purple owl's clover is another annual, but what makes this plant interesting is it gets some of its' nutrients from the roots of neighboring plants. It is semi-parasitic, and when growing it in a nursery setting the seeds are often paired with a native perennial host plant like purple needle grass. Western blue eyed grass is not an annual, but it does die back completely in the summer. It's also not a grass, but related to irises with a compact rhizome (instead of typical roots). Happy CA Native Plant Week! CA has over 6,000 species and subspecies of plants native to the state. These species account for over 30% of all the plant species found in the continental USA and over 1/3 are endemic just to CA. Bolsa Chica has different habitats from wetland/lowland to upland, and are comprised of different types of plants. Yellow flowers abound at Bolsa Chica in the spring, especially with a rainy season. The two most common native yellow flowers are the bladderpods (Peritoma arborea) and coast or bush sunflowers (Encelia californica). Hummingbirds are a sure thing when the bladderpod is in bloom, which can be year round with the right conditions. The plant gets its name from the seed pod which is an air filled sack resembling, well, a bladder. It's also evergreen and won't drop its leaves during the hot dry season like the sunflower. The sunflowers, with their large waving blooms, cover large areas right next to the trails, and are probably the most popular to photograph during the spring. Please don't pick the flowers because there are numerous insects and birds who rely on them. Both species are easy to grow with a fast grow rate. However, the sunflower is an aggressive spreader and will crowd out other plants. Also, bladderpods have an odor that smell unpleasant to some people, especially when wet, so be forewarned before planting it next to your front door. 📷 Mike Zampelli and E. Baby blue-eyes (Nemophila menziesii), a lovely little blue flower, is one of the original annual wildflowers the Bolsa Chica Stewards started growing in the Growing Space, our CA native plant nursery. It's found throughout CA, ranging from sea level up to 6500ft, in many different types of habitats. A spring bloomer, it's easy to grow from seed and requires little water. Many insects are attracted to it, including moths and butterflies.
