Students from the university where I teach volunteered at the #stlfetes2023 ball and I was so happy to have them there! My student on the far left fit into one of my gowns, the one to the right of me in the photo borrowed the white dress from a friend of mine and made her open robe (new sewist!), and the student on the far right borrowed a gown from another friend! I am marveling over the amount of free time I had in 2020 when I made all these ridiculous ruffles by hand. I haven’t had a minute to sew in the two weeks since #stlfetes2023 and I’m looking forward to winter break. I love my job and the class I’m taking but I never should have agreed to so much course overload. I realize I am an incredibly privileged person to have a job that usually makes me happy, and to be in a doctoral program. Quite the magical evening at the Fetes Historiques de Saint Louis ball with my dear friends and fellow ball committee members and volunteers in the @stlgeorgians and so many other lovely people! I pulled my robe a la francaise (RALF) out to tack on a little dust ruffle to the hem and do some touch ups (frat check, finally finish the shoulder seams on the inside, etc), and oh my goodness I’d forgotten how much I love the excess of this dress and how much time I had during the early pandemic to hand sew this entire thing. Last evening I had the pleasure of being invited at Château Borély to the opening ceremony of their new exhibition "L'Asie fantasmée". I was very honoured that two of my garments were chosen by the curatorial team to illustrate the 18th century preference for indienne fabrics in fashion. It is amazing to see them displayed in a room lined with the very same type of fabric, in which they fit almost organically. This one-year-lasting exhibition at Château Borély has captured our imagination: fine porcelain and earthenware can be discovered alongside screens and wallpaper, textiles, furniture and portraits from the 18th and 19th centuries. These works take us into a world that owes its attraction to the successful synthesis of Japanese, Indian, Turkish and Chinese motifs against the background of European aesthetics. The rooms of the castle itself, with their variety of stucco elements, ceiling paintings, and overdoors, represent for visitors a journey into the unsurpassed French 18th century sense of beauty. With their exhibition and accompanying catalogue, the curators, @mjlinou @furieusement_shu @un_doux_reveur and other experts such as @_clementt_ offer a feast for the eyes which the public will remember wistfully for a long time to come. My gown for the @stlgeorgians ball is waiting patiently in my costume closet (with Delilah 🐊) for October 21st! I am a sucker for details, the more time consuming and intricate, the better. #Fallforcostume Day 22: Seasonal "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are octobers", Anne Shirley once said and I think it is true. Octobers are for me the embodiment of fall and Anne of Green Gables is on of the stories, that resonates with my image of fall the most, so when I read the motto for today on the list, I immediately thought of late victorian/edwardian saque dresses, paired with aprons and half-up/half-down hairstyles and the orange fields and trees. I wanted to create such a dress for a while and this was the last motivation I needed to actually make it. The dress is made out of an old duvet and the apron of a bedsheet, so this outfit would also qualify for today's actall moto, sustainable. I love how the dress turned out and I am sure I will wear it a lot this autumn/winter. I also seem to be the only person, that collects the hiproses around here.
