Scholastic Spotlight: This week, Nevada Museum of Art is featuring Scholastic Art Award recipients from the 2024 @artandwriting Competition. Today, we are highlighting Shea Toland, a Freshman at Reno High School. Shea received Gold Keys in Digital Art and Painting for the works “Moving Forward” and “A Few Friends”. Shea’s soft and dreamy works transport viewers into ethereal realms, where natural landscapes intertwine with the whimsy of imagination. Employing a diverse range of mediums, including chalk, gouache, and digital illustration, Shea captures the delicate interplay between humanity and the animal kingdom in her soft, dreamlike creations. The Nevada Museum of Art will honor these artists in addition to all the winners and scholarship recipients in a ceremony at the University of Nevada Reno on Thursday, February 15. This is a special piece because I’ve redone it an absurd amount of times before finally getting it right 😭 I attempted this idea last year with a more abstract approach (slide 3), but I really just wasn’t happy with it. This year, I revisited it, because I thought it was a strong concept that just lacked a good execution. My grandma ❤️ “A World Away” 17 x 14 inches Pen stippling on paper Description: I didn’t realize the importance of love and adoration from grandparents until it was time for me to fly across continents to a new country. The one person who would take me to school, feed me, and protect me, is now world away, with miles and miles of sea and land between us. Even then, the love and adoration from my grandma remains just as abundant and strong. Having finally met her this year after a long time (due to covid), it hit me how much time I had lost with her. I feel the void and her absence in my day to day life. This stippling artwork is weeks and weeks of love and dedication poured into each tiny dot. Since around September, I’ve been working on this portfolio depicting what it’s like to live with autism in a world built for non-autistic people and how that can lead to self hatred and even self destructive behavior. We put on these masks and pretend to be what we assume we should be, pretending we understand things that we struggle to grasp and trying to fit in with a crowd that would be surprised if they knew the truth. But, like puzzle pieces, you can’t put something where it doesn’t fit. You can pretend it goes somewhere, but the shape, the real identity of that piece, always shows through. Just as puzzle pieces can’t alter themselves to fit where you want them to, people cannot alter their true identities. I’ve always struggled with voicing how autism and masking has affected my mental health. This set of pieces was very personal for me in that sense.
