It is a beautiful 70F sunny day so I decided to touch up my CC2 effects with Otterwax. The jacket was not too bad since it’s newer and was already CC2’d last year. The pants, however, completely worn away after a couple year’s of wear and tear so I had to practically start over. I found leaving the suit in the sun to warm up the cloth helps with the Otterwax application. Let it sit for a few minutes and use the hairdryer to blend. While both the jacket and pants are from At the Front, it’s obvious they are cut from different materials, having been purchased at different times. The jacket took the Otterwax really well. The pants didn’t soak in as well. Anyways I’m leaving both in the sun for a while to see if it will melt in more. For the record, I don’t super CC2 every square inch of my uniform. If I did there would be no aeration or breathing. I tend to heavily highlight things like pocket and lower skirt of the jacket and lightly do the flat spots. United States of America, 101st Airborne Division Medal - The 101st Airborne Division, or “Screaming Eagles” as they are nicknamed, is an elite division of the United States Army that specializes in air assault operations often operating behind enemy lines. Originally established in 1918 they gained renown for their role in Operation Overlord (D-Day landings). They were also deployed to Vietnam in 1967 and were referred to as the “Chicken Men” by the Vietnamese because of their insignia. Enemy commanders are said to have warned their men to avoid the Chicken Men at all costs because they were sure to lose any engagement with them. These medals honour this elite combat division and show an armed soldier walking through long grass with a helicopter in the background and the words “101st Airborne Division” above and “Screaming Eagles” below with the insignia of the unit to the right, a bald eagle. (Part 3 of 3) Guarnere fought in the remainder of the Normandy campaign, served during Operation: Market Garden during the Holland campaign and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, helping to hold the line along with the other Paratroopers until General Patton's 3rd Army was able to break through the Bulge. But, this did not mean a break for the men of the 506th PIR. While "Easy" Company was dug in just outside of the town of Foy, the Germans shelled them day and night. During one of the barrages, Joe Toye, a fellow NCO and one of Guarnere's best friends did not get to a foxhole in time which resulted in his right leg getting blown off. During the break in the shelling, Guarnere heard Toye's calls for help and left his foxhole to rescue him. The shelling started again almost immediately after that. Guarnere dragged Toye to a nearby foxhole where Lieutenant Lynn "Buck" Compton, another close friend of his, was urging them to get in. Before the men had a chance, a shell dropped right on top of them. Compton was blown back into his foxhole by the impact, but was unhurt. During the break in the barrage, he left his foxhole to where his brothers-in-arms were last seen and the sight that greeted him drove him to his breaking point: Toye and Guarnere without their right legs. Both men survived their wounds, but their service in the war was over. For Guarnere, he was transported back to the States where he married his girlfriend, Frances and fathered two sons. He worked many odd jobs in the years that followed and also organized the "Easy" Company reunions every year until he was unable to do so. Guarnere passed away of a brain aneurysm at the age of 90 in his hometown of Philadelphia. (Part 2 of 3) Like every man in "Easy" Company, Guarnere bonded with his brothers-in-arms under the tyrannical Captain Herbert Sobel, his resourcefulness and leadership aiding him to the rank of Sergeant. No matter what, Guarnere always stood by his men and did what was needed. When Lieutenant Richard Winters was transferred due to his court-martial because of Lieutenant Sobel's pettiness, Guarnere and the other NCOs delivered an ultimatum to Colonel Robert Sink: bring Winters back or they would turn in their stripes. The reason for their actions was that Sobel was incompetent on the battlefield and that made him dangerous. This act of mutiny came with the consequence of death by firing squad. The only thing that saved the men was the fact that the invasion of France was underway and they couldn't afford to lose any men. Some were demoted, a few were transferred to other regiments, but none of them were executed. Because of this, Lieutenant Winters remained in "Easy" Company and Lieutenant Sobel was transferred out of the company. Guarnere earned his nickname, "Wild Bill" because of his ferociousness towards the enemy. The night before D-Day, he found out his older brother, Henry who was serving with the 1st Armoured Division in the Italian campaign as a medic, had died at Monte Cassino. A switch flipped inside Guarnere and he wanted to kill as many Germans as he could. This was demonstrated after the jump when he and a few other Paratroopers linked up with Winters. A group of Germans were hauling supplies when the Paratroopers ambushed them. Even after the enemy had been taken care of, Guarnere was still chomping at the bit, wanting to get revenge. (Part 1 of 3) Staff Sergeant William "Wild Bill" Guarnere (born April 28th, 1923 - March 8th, 2014) was an Army Paratrooper who served with "Easy" Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during WWII. Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of 10 children which meant, in his own words, "I got wise real early in life." (Brothers In Battle: Best of Friends, Chapter 1, Page 2) When he was 15, Guarnere joined the Citizens Military Training Camp program (CMTC) which upon graduation, he would be eligible for a commission as an officer in the United States Army, which was his plan. The only reason he was accepted was because his mother lied about his age on his behalf as he would have been too young otherwise. But, before he could graduate, the program was cancelled because of the outbreak of the war. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Guarnere left high school to work at Baldwin Locomotive Works to help make Sherman tanks for the war effort. His mother did not approve, as none of her kids had graduated. So, he switched to working the night shift so he could go back to school and graduate, which he did in 1942. Because of the importance of his job, Guarnere was exempt from military service. What a great day! We’ve been out a few times, searching burns and slashes, but we’ve never had any luck. Mushroom picking was becoming a bummer. Today was different. We found our first morel growing right on our property this morning. A perfect natural specimen. I had good intel on a spot close by…right behind the place I used to work - College of the Siskiyous!! My youngest daughters first success is also the place that pretty much raised me 😉 The #morel of the story is, don’t give up. She’s a picker now.
