The biggest part of growth is realizing where you are in life and what you can do to change it! These pictures show a woman who didn’t think much of herself and gave up on the progress she had made. A woman defeated by everyday life and raising four kiddos practically on her own. It hasn’t been easy. These pictures also show a woman who put on the swimsuit and had an amazing day with her kids and lived life to the fullest because everyday isn’t promised. I don’t look at these and see disgust as many of you do! I see a woman who is recognizing she needs change and willing to give it her all. I have an amazing support system and people who love me at every stage of my journey and it is because of you all that I know I can do it again! -Monday- I remember as the nurse came to share the treatment plan she asked if Ellison would like to meet Espen the therapy dog. Her voice jumped with a YES! It really was to help soften what was coming next. The nurse was as kind as she could be delivering the news . She was extremely transparent and honest. As she said she would not be returning home for some time along with no school or any activity ,Ellison broke down as I did as well holding her. Her entire life was taken away. Along with who she saw in the mirror. She was the told what the harsh chemo would do to her appearance and as any 12 yr old they are looking for part of their identity in their looks. It became too difficult to face herself in the mirror . It was someone she could barely recognize. No hair , frail frame, pail skin and scars . Watching her face her reality was gut wrenching. Her body was also not what she knew . Nothing was working right. Going from being incredibly active, happy and healthy to confined to a hospital and not even the whole hospital, just a floor. As her time progressed she found pieces within her life she could smile about. Quickly she became grateful for the smallest accomplishments of the day and life. Bringing home cooked meals brought her joy. Having an array of bedding,clothes and special items from her room to make her hospital room feel more comfortable. Fresh laundry straight from the dryer. I would race to the hospital as soon as I took it out and she could feel the warmth in the middle of the stack. We were all so grateful when her pain was controlled . You could hear the screams and tears of the children in pain. We would hold each other and cry for them. She knew how awful the pain could get. While Spring colours are dominating our city views, bulbs in drifts and early flowering cherry-plum blossom, my contrarian eye is caught by splashes of gold over grey-green.
