We also visited the Commonwealth War Grave side in Étaples. This cemetery is mainly to remember the fallen of WW1. But also some from WW2. The area of Étaples was during WW1 a commonwealth reinforcemnet camp area with hospitals, over 100.000 troops where here. The cemetery containes 10.771 commonwealth burials of the First World War, 35 of these burials are unidentified. During WW2 there where hospitals stationed again. And there where burials from january 1940 till the evacuation in may 1940. Of the 119 Second World War burials, 38 are unidentified. There are also 662 non Commonwealth burials, including 6 unidentified. Finaly there are also 5 non World War service burials. The last day we made another tour to the coastline, we started at Fort Vauban. Unfortunaly closed at this time for visiting (opens in may). The fort was build in 1680, it's the last one on the French coast. During ww2 it was used as a prisson for foreign forced labour workers. There where also some ww2 bunkers. After Saint-Omer we went east to Aire-sur-la-Lys. Another beautiful old citty, with churches and other old buildings. Also there is the "Moulin des Invalides", this watermill was build in 1682 by soldiers that because of their injuries, were no longer suitable for military service. Also in Saint-Omer are the ruins of the Abbey of Saint-Bertin. A former Benedict abbey, build between the 7th and 16th century. It was abandoned in 1799, in 1830 parts where used to build the townhall. Only the belltower remained, but collapsed in ww2 after a bombardment.
