The Eight of Wands: Siegfried Bathes in Dragon Blood. Kind of a follow up or prequel to last week's Kriemhild. For the card I've illustrated the scene where Siegfried becomes (almost) invincible by bathing in the blood of the dragon he has just killed. The blood makes his skin impenetrable everywhere except a spot on his back where a stray linden tree leaf fell, essentially becoming his Achilles heel. The main source for this was the 1924 film, Die Nibelungen: Siegfried (I've included a couple of shots from that film). The film and its follow up Kriemhild's Revenge are both public domain and can be found in HD remasters very easily online. I couldn't recommend both films enough, when released they were probably the most impressive films ever made, and they still hold up pretty well for films that turn 100 years old this year. C'est aujourd'hui en tant que directeur des Éditions Cavaliers Seuls que je vous partage mon ressenti. Accrochez-vous, ça va secouer. Je vais encore me faire des amis 😂 Voilà précisément la raison pour laquelle les Éditions Cavaliers Seuls ne travaillent pas / plus avec les grandes enseignes - FNAC, Cultura, Amazon : ces derniers ne respectent ni leur partenaires ni leur clientèle. Sur demande, nous leur vendons nos ouvrages, mais en leur accordant les mêmes conditions qu'aux autres. Ainsi, là où Cultura a accepté de traiter avec nous sur cette base, la FNAC s'est détournée. Mais nous tiendrons notre position, car il serait impensable que nous accordions des privilèges indus à un grand groupe qui croule déjà sous les avantages concurrentiels. Ayant travaillé aux côtés de libraires de longues années, je suis bien placé pour savoir qu'une poignée d'ogres, ces fameux grands groupes, se partage les maisons d'éditions dites "prestigieuses" et, non contents de verrouiller le secteur de la culture pour le modeler selon leur propre conception, ils imposent des conditions inacceptables qui asphyxient progressivement les libraires, sans jamais se soucier de leur survie, laquelle se fait de plus en plus précaire. Ajoutez à cela un marché de l'occasion dont l'État vient de signer l'arrêt de mort, et vous obtiendrez un tableau des plus saisissant concernant la littérature en France. Malheureusement, de trop nombreux libraires indépendants persistent encore à se montrer frileux dès lors qu'il s'agit de travailler avec les petites maisons d'éditions indépendantes. C'est bien dommage, d'autant qu'il s'agit potentiellement de la réponse à leurs problèmes : nous n'imposons pas d'offices, nos conditions sont autrement plus souples et nous les considérons avec respect et bienveillance. Pour que le cycle pernicieux qui s'est installé et nous mène tout droit à la destruction du secteur du livre prenne fin, il s'agit de faire un pas de côté et de recentrer ses efforts vers un objectif clair, aux côtés de partenaires qui partagent les mêmes causes, problématiques et difficultés.
