Susan is a first generational Vietnamese woman who lost her mother when she was 11 due to botched plastic surgery. Her family doesn’t really talk about it and this memoir is her working through this grief and discovering who her mother was. I loved it ! 4.5 ⭐️ 🎧Listen for The Lie- a fun mystery. A must on audio. A woman’s best friend was murdered years ago and she was found with her blood all over her but she has no memory of that night. Years later a true crime podcast is trying to figure out what really happened. I really enjoyed this one and couldn’t stop listening. Just For the Summer- I adore anything Abby Jimenez writes ! This was an amazing audiobook experience! I'm giving @andyserkis ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for his outstanding narration of the Hobbit! And shout out to my library @littleelmpubliclibrary for having so many of Tolkien's books in audio format. I have listened to all 3 Tales of Middle Earth, Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers also read by Andy Serkis. I am currently listening to The Silmarillion and The Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle Earth. I will finish my Tolkien Adventure with The Return of the King read by Andy Serkis. Thus, I will have finished a 9 audiobook marathon of Tolkien's works! I will be reading or listening to more in the future and definitely listening to the LOTR and Hobbit audiobooks again. Recently read: "The Secret Adversary" (1922) and "N or M?" (1941), by Agatha Christie. This was my first time sampling Christie's Tommy and Tuppence novels, and I find myself delighted by them and wanting more. The first is a between-the-wars escapade, with Tommy and Tuppence as two bright young things down on their luck and looking for work (or potential wealthy spouses). They soon are enlisted as undercover agents to locate a missing woman who had been entrusted with some sensitive papers at the sinking of the Lusitania. Their investigation brings them in contact with shadowy characters, a rich American, an amnesiac, and other people who are not what they seem to be. It's a cracking good yarn. The second is set during the early part of WWII, and the couple are at loose ends. Tommy and Tuppence are now empty nesters in their forties and find that they are unwanted for wartime work. That is, until they are once again called upon to sniff out a spy ring. They are dispatched to a small coastal town to see if they can identify the traitors among the guests at a seaside inn. This case has a much more dire backdrop, as the war encroaches on Britain. The capitulation of France and the evacuation of Dunkirk is happening. I find it interesting to keep in mind how uncertain the times were to people reading this book when it first came out. The plucky heroes prevailed, but the fate of their nation hung in the balance. -=-=- April 2024 I had an Audible credit to burn and got this two-for-one bundle. I finished Magnolia Park: Into the Dark and cried repeatedly (swipe for exhibits A and B) and while it was slower than the others (and I kind of thought the others were a little redundantly slow at times) it actually kind of suited this one? So many feelings. So glad to see Beej and Magnolia get their HEA, but also still can’t believe about BRIDGE! And that pretty much blasted in my head the whole way through. The author of the Guncle, I’m so happy I read this book. I tend to stray from books about grief, because it’s not really my jam. But just like the Guncle, the Celebrants is a very real and raw celebration of love, friendship, and grief. After the sudden death of a friend in college, five friends decide to have living “funerals” when they’re still alive and in times of distress. This way they know they are loved, and have connection. When true grief strikes the group, the reader is transported back through the years to see all of the friends funerals. The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy by Anne Ursu This book was a very pleasant surprise. I hadn’t heard much about it, but the intro intrigued me enough to listen to it as an audiobook. WOW! I’m so glad I did. A girl who has an older brother who can do no wrong in their parents eyes, seems to mess up time and time again. They are from a small village and don’t have a lot, but are certain that will all change when her brother becomes a sorcerer that everyone is certain he is destined to be. However, on the day of his big ‘test’ for magical ability, Marya messes things up. She is sent to a school for wayward young girls called Dragomir Academy. It is mysterious, hundreds of miles from her home, and she is not excited about it. Once there, she tries to learn how to fit in, something she has never done well. It seems the world has no place for her, and she is constantly in trouble or questioning her teachers- which is NOT allowed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First thought when I finished Iron Flame: "Yo, wtf bro" second was laughter. I feel conflicted, like I'm upset but there was a warning so I can't be upset. I'm surprised but not really, almost like it was expected but you didn't know when, that's how I'm feeling. Love is a crazy thing, it can be a weakness (see Threaded by Tay Rose) or a strength. Damn. I hated the ending but also loved it. 💙Things I Loved: 👫 Violet and Xaden: I loved that Iron Flame focused on their relationship but didn't make it the sole focus of the book. Also that their relationship was real (or at least as real as it can be in a world with dragons) 💞 Violet's friends: her squad was there to support her, just like previous years squads were together. They definitely grew together like they were supposed to and I love that for them 🪢 The Twists! There were a couple of times where I figured out what would happen before it happened and I love that I was right, it also made me want to read more, I kept getting excited over the little twists and turns this book took 💔Things I Didn't Love: The way it ended. Based on the ending, Onyx Storm will have an interesting beginning I hope🤞🏾🤞🏾 🤔 People underestimate Violet, after Fourth Wing, they should have stopped but it makes sense that they don't because first she was never a first year, now she was never a second year. I listened to the audiobook and found the narration to be pleasant even though the story itself wasn't engaging for me. 🧼🫧🧽 ❤︎AUDIOBook 🎧 Review❤︎ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I loved The Maid and couldn’t wait to visit the old gang again in this second in the series. It’s a few years later and Molly is Head Maid at the Regency Grand Hotel and this time a world renown special guest author of mysteries is murdered during his lecture and afternoon tea at the hotel and Molly is determined to find out who did it and why. This time there are two timelines and we get a lot of back story on Molly and her early life with her grandmother which was quite interesting to hear. I was VERY disappointed the old gang WASN’T back and the side characters I loved from the first novel were either excluded or had a small role. They were replaced by some new characters, including Lily, Molly’s maid-in-training, who gets caught up in the murder investigation. Unfortunately I didn’t love any of the new characters and missed the heartwarming close bond among the gang that was at the forefront of the first novel. I especially missed the warmth and charm of Molly’s grandmother and all her constant words of wisdom. They only popped up occasionally. The mystery itself was not as compelling as the first one was but I did bump up my rating because it was fun hearing about a mystery writer’s road to success. ☞ What author, living or past, would you love to meet? ✒︎ For current, I’d say maybe Lynn Painter but if any of my favorites came to town I would love to meet them. Ok y’all know I’ve been riding the struggle bus with books lately, well thankfully this one came along and gave me a little boost of sunshine and shook the negativity away! Onward and upward for May! This one hits shelves on May 7 so make sure to pick it up 🍋 When Evie is made redundant at her job and her grandmother gets married for the 8th time and in so doing taken over a bookshop in Santorini, Evie’s mother and sister decide it’s the perfect time for Evie to go over and see if she can help out and make sure her grandmother is ok. When she gets there, Evie’s grandmother asks her to pretend to date the landlord’s son to keep him from closing the bookshop because they’re behind on the rent, but there is much more to the story! This was a fun, fluffy and entertaining listen and I love the idea of a bookshop with a club in the back that has a rent-a-dog service where patrons can come and rent dogs that are at the shelter and pet them while they’re reading books at the bookstore! Who wouldn’t love that? The characters were lots of fun-especially Gran-she gave Evie a run for her money! Then there was the “fake” romance between Georgios and Evie that turned into something real and sweet. The whole thing was just a fun way to escape for the day and I will be looking forward to more by this author. QOTD: If you could meet anyone in person, who would it be? Book 8 of 2025: The Only One Left by Riley Sager (@riley.sager) Oh. My. God. Was that a trip or what?! The twists. The turns. The secrets. The lies. The betrayals. Woah. I just finished this while making dinner and had to actually turn off the stove and take a minute to decompress from what I just read (heard?). I cannot believe this is my first Riley Sager book - was I just not listening when everyone was saying how amazing he is?? Well, now I’m onto another Sager novel. The way the story flowed and changed is truly an art that I just wasn’t ready to give up so, on to the next one. This whole audio book thing is really working out in my favor - I’m now way ahead of my reading goal AND I get in more exercise because I tell myself I get to listen more the more I take Polly on walks. Undeniably Convenient *ALC review* This was my first J. Saman book and I will definitely be reading more. This one was so fun and had some unexpected twists and turns. Maybe that’s usual of her books? I am excited to find out. This was a man obsessed even when he didn’t realize it. He used the cover to have a baby with no strings attached to hide any past trauma and emotions he had toward previously getting married and having a family. Baby of convenience was new to me, and I ate it up. Audio review: I was an audio listener and fell easily into this story. The narrators Savannah Peachwood and Alex Kidd really took on these characters and had me easily feeling all the emotions and ups and downs in this story. I found myself binge listening, wanting to listen to one more chapter. This book is definitely made for audio, and these narrators were perfection. Second Chance. Hospital workplace boss x employee.
