A totally gorgeous Victorian book pendant made of silver. The pendant has a beautiful enamel Pansy design on the front in colours of purple and green. The book opens to reveal a silver gilt interior, with a central page, that has a slim slot at the top so you can add a tiny picture or slither of paper. The locket closes securely with a silver catch. The Pansy symbol was extremely popular in antique jewellery because of the French word ‘Pensée’ which translated as both Pansy and thoughts. ‘Pensée a vous’ means ‘Thinking of you’ and ‘Pensée a moi’ ‘Think of me’, so it became the perfect motif for jewellery, and was often gifted to a loved one as a gesture of thoughtfulness and love. A special visit to @armourystjames - indisputably the most delightful, beguiling and altogether unique antiques shop in London - to examine at close quarters one of its more recent acquisitions: a travelling desk set, just four and a half inches high, which was, when new, in the possession of Queen Alexandra, the widowed consort of King Edward VII. Engraved with a crowned double ‘A’ cypher and fitted with compartments for stamps and matches, as well as an ink dropper, seal and wax, it was manufactured by Asprey of New Bond Street in a sleek and streamlined - in fact, almost Art Deco - style that belies its hallmark of 1911. • Incidentally, the black wax is a rare and somewhat archaic survival. Even in Court circles, envelopes with adhesive flaps had become the norm by the Edwardian era, at least where personal, and therefore relatively informal, correspondence was concerned. A princely 18th birthday present. Described as a mirror, a Fuerstenspiegel, or princely mirror. Not a mirror which functions in the usual way, but a rather daunting example for a young prince to be reminded of ‘good government’, perhaps when brushing his hair? An example of poor decision-making - the Judgement of Paris - is at the lower part. Most of the iconography is centred around the dream of Nebuchadnezzar from the Old Testament book of Daniel. Daniel stands on the top of the mirror - a heroic figure, a mighty warrior who appeared to King of Babylon in his dream, which presaged the demise of the ancient civilisations of Assyria, Persia, Greece and Rome - which would be succeeded by… the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation - and below Daniel can be seen the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire with its wings emblazoned with the armorials of the Imperial Free Cities and States. For good measure, and just in case one had not quite got the message, figures of the seven theological and seven cardinal virtues also feature. In fact the mirror is not only a massive piece of sparkling gilded silver sculpture - the centre panel opens to reveal the reflective surface… Made in Luneburg, c. 1587-92 by the marvellously-named Luleff Meier and Direct Utermarke; silver sheets overlaid onto carved wood ((c) State Art Collections, Dresden. The Vyvyan ‘salt’, so named for the family of Trelowarren House, Cornwall in which family it remained until it came to the @vamuseum Made in gilded silver in London by an unknown goldsmith, but hallmarked 1592-3. Salts were the ultimate status symbol, denoting seniority at the dining table, perhaps the most elaborate ritual of the day in formal (and certainly royal) households in the 16th and 17th centuries. Transalpine creations. This ebony cabinet was made by Elias Boscher, an Augsburg maker who signed his name in pencil on the piece, in around 1660. The hard stone or pietre dure plaques were made in Florence at the Galleria dei Lavori, the official workshops of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. There are also small sections of rare and beautiful hard stones fitted into the cabinet purely to add richness and beauty. There are fourteen drawers and forty-four secret or concealed compartments and drawers, all arranged around a door which would have contained a rare object, such as a silver-gilt-mounted nautilus cup, coconut cup, or a small bronze statuette. The earliest known history of the cabinet is of its purchase prior to 1841 by Sir Charles Coote, of Ballyfin, Co Laois, Ireland. These simply beautiful sterling silver gilt teaspoons are particularly fine examples, with exquisite enamelled handpainted flowers, and kept safe in their original box. I love the rounded shape of the bowl, it flows into the stylish, straight handle perfectly. That long handle leads to a series of rounded extending curves like the top of a column. At the back of the spoon bowls each one has a different flower painted on a richly lustred white background. Silver gilt Maison Maquet mounted Chinese bowl, c.1890. Signed Maquet Paris Nice with French silver control marks. 7 inches diameter. Maquet was a luxury paper and leather goods manufacturer founded in 1841. They became the supplier to the Empress Eugene and a large number of European Courts. They also produced luxury items such as smoking accessories, clocks and watches. Often these pieces were designed around oriental items, hardstone snuffbottles became table lighters, mounted in silver, jade plaques transformed into boxes and here a bowl is made into a smokers companion or desk tidy. The work is exquisite, the field is acid etched and the highlights are finely engraved with detail. There are pagodas, fish, dragons, prunes and ho ho birds. Norwegian enameled silver is justly famous around the world, and one of the finest makers anywhere is the legendary silversmith David Anderson. This is a beautiful set for one, comprising a serving spoon, tea spoon, and a sugar sifter. David Andersen was founded in Christiania (now part of greater Oslo), Norway in 1876. Andersen was a gold and silversmith and his exceptional skill and artistry meant the firm saw great success from its early days, and over the next decade he expanded the workshop and added a second shop in Oslo. When Andersen died in 1901 his son Arthur took over the reins of the firm, and brought in a number of changes instituted some important changes, and most relevant to today he introduced the use of enameling on the company's gold and silver jewelry and cutlery. This was so popular that the style has become emblematic of the firm, which continues today in its fourth generation of family ownership. These spoons are wonderful examples of what makes David Andersen work so highly sought after. Each piece is like a bright little jewel, the incredibly detailed wire work on the silver showing through the fine enamel work, with extra jewelling around the spoon heads and some superb twisted work in the silver handles. The sifter and serving spoon have delightful scalloping in the bowl and on the sifter piercing to allow the caster sugar to sprinkle through. Everywhere you look on each piece there are lovely little touches and embellishments that show the pride and artistry that goes into each piece. It's sunny and the warmest day of the year so far today in London, so my thoughts turned to ice cream and this fabulous French solid silver ice cream serving set, made between 1895 and 1923. It feels wonderfully decadent to have a set for ice cream, although in fact you could use the set to serve a variety of desserts. The blade and bowl are gilt - that is, covered in a thin layer of gold - that helps to slow down tarnishing, making sure the pieces are always looking their best. The shapes are flowing and elegant, with elaborate scalloping around the base of the blade to give you a gentle cutting area to section the ice-cream (or soft dessert), and both a curved and a straight edge. The spoon is just as thoughtfully designed, a straight edge one side to get under what you're serving, and a turned up edge to stop anything coming off the back. The turned up edge also has some scalloping and curved details to help you separate whatever you're serving. Long handles give you good control of the heads, and provide a nice balance in your hand. The pieces combine lovely leafy etching details with meticulous moulding. The spoon bowl and the knife blade have beautiful grasses and leaves, embellished with delicate trellis patterns. There's an elaborate neck on each with flower buds, and then nice neoclassical details up the handles. At the end we find moulded leaves and a refined twisted design to complete these delightful pieces. Made by the Parisian silversmith Henri Lapeyre, these are wonderful examples of high quality French silverware.
