Was going around Maxwell Food Centre recently one day and found a new stall that is located at the side of the food centre that is facing Maxwell Road — bearing a well-lit blue-coloured signage is Xi Duo Duo 喜多多; the stall being located just right beside Hup Kee Wu Xiang Guan Chang. Whilst seemingly looking much like any other stall that serves up Mainland Chinese cuisine on first sight, it was only upon noticing that they do also served scrambled egg rice bowls that the stall piqued our interest; this is especially when one considers how the folks at Xi Duo Duo are literally serving the same exact fare that DanLao 蛋佬 has created a hype over some time ago at DanLao’s own backyard — this is despite the scrambled egg rice bowls not being quite their emphasis here. For those whom pay enough attention to the menu at Xi Duo Duo, Xi Duo Duo seems to be more focused on their Chinese La Mian and dumpling offerings. In an attempt to offer patrons with a slightly more unique take on scrambled egg bowls, it is interesting to note that Xi Duo Duo also offers scrambled egg noodle bowl on their menu, featuring the same meat options that is served with their scrambled egg rice bowl dishes as well.

I've been added to the hawkers' WhatsApp group 💬 In Singapore, each hawker centre has a chairperson who works at the same market. This chairperson serves as a bridge between the government and the hawkers. The feedback loop goes 2-ways: the government sends important messages to the hawkers via the chairperson, and the chairperson escalates any concerns from the ground to the authorities. Despite this bridge, the system remains porous across the layers. Each market has a designated government officer who can be reached easily. For example, when I asked whether I could hang a poster on the pillar, the govt officer said: sure. Benjamin, the chairperson, even suggested additional spots to place my banners. I wrote about this system for my PhD (using a theory called neo-institutionalism), so it feels surreal to experience it first-hand! My sisters made a welcome sign to place inside the shop to encourage people to step in and browse, because it isn't a common practice to go "inside" the shops at this market. But the sign kept falling off the wall, so I put it on the pillar outside, and I like the vibe. Almost like a theme park 😄 I'm waiting for the signboard folks to send me a quote. Pork Satay Those whom are familiar with the local F&B scene in the past couple of years might probably have come across the mention of Ah Pui Tiong Bahru Satay 阿肥中峇魯沙爹 — the story behind Ah Pui Tiong Bahru Satay is one that is especially worth mentioning considering how Ah Pui is said to have started off peddling his satays from a pushcart from the 1980s. There was one point of time in 2021 where 195 Pearl Hill Café provided Ah Pui with a space where he can retail his satays from — this was followed by the opening of Ah Pui Tiong Bahru Satay at Smith Street in a ground level shophouse unit where the now-defunct Chinatown Food Street was also located; this said location had closed in 2022. We were scrolling through social media one day and managed to have caught wind about Ah Pui’s return to the local F&B scene; now known as Ah Pui 阿肥 Satay, the operations of its new location has also been scaled down — now becoming a stall situated at the hawker centre as compared to the full-fledged eatery that it had once been at Smith Street. The stall is now situated at Blk 75 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh Food Centre, and can be found amongst the row of stalls facing Lorong 5 Toa Payoh — their presence should be rather noticeable considering how the stall sports a black signboard bearing a red logo in the middle. The number of offerings available at Ah Pui Satay in its current iteration has also been scaled down — the Pork Satay is still their current focus, though there is also the BBQ Prawn and Satay Rice that one can also go for. Ah Pui’s version of the pork satay has quite a distinctive style to it especially when compared against similar offering that are sold at hawker centres / coffeeshops around — this is likely due to his satays being prepared by hand. The Pork Satay at the current iteration of Ah Pui Satay still looks the part — his satay comes with noticeably chunkier slices of pork which definitely fits the slightly higher price tag that his pork satay commands for at $1 / piece (minimum order 10 pieces); one can also find a chunk of fatty meat that is sized wider than the lean meat that exists towards the end of the satay as well. ⬇️

Got to hear about the newly-opened Madam Lim’s Nasi Lemak that had just commenced operations at Holland Drive Food Centre before the recent coverage of the establishment on mainstream media. Madam Lim’s Nasi Lemak is located right at the end of Holland Drive Food Centre — one can find the stall being situated beside Blanco Court Kuay Chap which is tucked right at the back of the hawker centre. Considering how their signboard is being designed, we would think that the stall is a little hard to miss; Madam Lim’s Nasi Lemak bears a colourful signboard that features a gradual shift from pink to purple – a rather unique design for a signage of a food stall located at the hawker centre. Order and collection points are located on opposing ends at the stall, while the middle of the stall is occupied by the display case where one can check out the various add-on dishes that they have to offer. The offerings at Madam Lim’s Nasi Lemak can be described as rather straightforward here; there are basically just three (3) different sets which offers different options of meat — think Ayam Berempah, Beef Rendang and Kuning Fish for patrons to choose from.

First time I surprised myself. Was a bit sus when I found out that this much raved about Satay Beehoon does not have pork liver and cockles. (IKR but bear with me) And maybe due to the circumstances where I was proudly the last 3 person they served. With the rest of the disappointed people being turned away 😈 Would have to say that this plate of Satay Beehoon, checks all the right spots. At $7 (thank you CDC vouchers), the peanut gravy wasn’t too sweet, spicy, or greasy as some of their other equally popular competitors. Generous amount of tender pork slices, chunky cuttlefish, fresh taupok (Beancurd puffs), and perfectly cooked shrimp. That additional eye for detail where they help to cut the blanched beehoon, kangkong (water spinach), and beansprouts; helped make the dining experience so much easier. 10/10 would eat again even though no liver and cockles. But could be an 11/10 otherwise 🌚

Just wanted to share some vegetarian delights I had since my end of exams😋 📍Rong Yuan Vegetarian 宏缘素食 Clementi Ave 3 Block 443 coffeeshop 💰2 vege + 1 mock meat + brown rice $4.90 Food🍴 Background: This was the first vegetarian coffeeshop stall which truly impressed me by its extensive menu ever since I keptstarted my hunt for cheap vegetarian caifan 👏👏👏 Review: I have always avoided ordering eggplant from caifan stalls due to its ability to absorb oil better than other vegetables. However, i decided to get that because an exception once in a while is fine😆 Its smokiness from the rich and savory garlic sauce made it pair up so well with rice. The mock fried fish was more flavourful compared to other mock meat i had too! (More "meat" taste! If ukuk😆) Overall, it was 100% worth it for a try if you are around the area! Another vegetarian stall I had at Chinatown people's park centre😋 📍People's Park Centre (a stall at the corner at B1) 💰2 taukwa + vege + brown rice $4.40 Food🍴 Background: This stall had a short queue compared to another vegetarian caifan stall with dull lightings without queue. High hopes, but alas, the taste fell short of expectations... Review: I asked for less rice and i was glad the owner did not give lesser ingredients thereafter👏the portion given especially for the vege was commendable! However, the taukwa was really dry and tough as shown in the 2nd pic. Overall, the taste was not worth it for the price. But they do sell other dishes like vegetarian tom yum soup and hokkien mee, probably would give that a try next time.
