What's the best tool to use if your dog pulls on the lead? Go to any pet shop with this problem and they'll be happy to sell you any number of different training aids: 🐾 Slip lead 🐾 Figure of 8 🐾 Harness 🐾 Anti-pull/front clip harness 🐾 Halti / gentle leader The truth is, some of these tools are great, but not all of them work with every dog. We're huge advocates of the slip lead, but there is a skill to using them safely, and not every dog takes to them well. Halti's and figure of 8's can be just as problematic and cause anxiety. Finding the right tool can be a difficult process, but the reality is, your dog's pulling for a reason. Working out what the reason and then addressing it is actually the secret to success. Is your dog pulling TO something? Maybe they want to play with that dog across the road. Maybe they associate strangers with affection, attention or treats. Perhaps that smell on the bush is just too alluring. Is your dog pulling AWAY from something? Maybe they're nervous of an approaching dog or the speed of a car on the road and they want to get away from it. Usually, pulling is as a result of fear or excitement. The issue I noticed was the anxiety in Sam while she was walking him and constantly having tension on his lead we started off with how to hold the lead and relax whilst also having full control of George, we discovered a basic slip lead is the best thing for him. Before I began the corrections, I wanted to see how he reacted to dogs, and he would react from 50 metres away lunging pulling growling and barking BUT.... 🐾Training Tip Tuesday🐾 This week’s focus is a tool we use to safely move dogs. The slip lead! 🐾Why do we use slip leads? A slip lead is a versatile tool that you have probably seen on Ruff Life Resort staff members. It is an all-in-one collar and leash. When a dog pulls, the slip lead tightens, with the tension releasing when the dog relaxes. 🐾Slip leads can be comfortable and put a more even pressure on a dogs neck than a standard flat collar. They are fairly universal in sizing, and easy for us to take on and off for quick transport of a dog. 🐾It is more difficult for a nervous dog to slide out of a slip lead, and we can also turn it into a makeshift lasso in order to catch a timid or overstimulated pup. 🐾All Ruff Life Resort staff are trained and certified in proper slip lead usage in order to ensure your pups safety. #TrainingTipTuesday #DogsOfClarksville #DogDaycare #DogBoarding #SlipLead #safedogsarehappydogs #ClarksvilleTN

🧚🏻♂️Meet Isabella🧚🏻♂️ Age: 5 months Breed: Doberman Pinscher Program: 12 day day and train Isabella here is sweet, spunky, and 100% mischievous. She is very energetic and needs something to do 24/7 in order to get her needs met. Training has been a great outlet for her and has helped her use her brain which is the best thing you can do for a high energy dog. We have also worked on teaching her a good "off" switch to be able to relax on her own. Puppies typically do not come knowing how to relax on their own and need to be taught. When given too much freedom Isabella will choose to pace rather than relax which is why it's so important to teach her how to do it on her own!
