Do you know the incredible story behind the print of Ansel Adams “The Golden Gate Before the Bridge” in #sothebysphotographs spring auction??? This bravura print was acquired in 1965 by Dick Erath (of @erathwines), who had met Adams several years earlier during one of the photographer’s workshops. After a lively correspondence between the two, Erath eventually bought this big photograph but accidentally sent Adams $9.60 more than what was owed. Adams was quick to refund him, for a total cost of $140.40. The print, now estimated @sothebys for $100,000 - 150,000, remained a treasured piece in the Erath family for more than six decades. LOT OF THE SEASON (imho): David Wojnarowicz, Untitled (Face in Dirt), 1991 Wojnarowicz recorded the following dream in his 11 December 1979 diary entry: “They’ve buried me in the coarse brown earth, all the way up to my teeth; somehow the mouth must be opened wide so that fillings of dirt spread within the jaw, over the white porcelain teeth, leaving one tooth exposed down to the gum.” Executed in 1991 shortly before the artist’s death, Untitled (Face in Dirt) is David Wojnarowicz’s last self-portrait. No lifetime prints exist as the artist was too weak from HIV/AIDS-related complications to fully realize this project. The photograph offered here is one of only three prints still in private hands. “She leaned against a whitewashed wall. I drew close… and kissed her. A tear rolled down her cheek–and I captured forever the moment.” Edward Weston, 30 January 1924 Edward Weston and Tina Modotti fell in love shortly after they met in 1920, and Weston began photographing Modotti immediately. This 1924 portrait, Tina with Tear, was made while the couple resided together in Mexico–the glistening tear on her cheek revealing a palpable intimacy between sitter and photographer. While the couple’s exhilarating relationship inspired some of their best work, their time in Mexico was not without struggle. The pair were emotionally and financially strained, frequently trying to make ends meet. This photo, one of my super-faves, is being offered in our current auction. Bidding ends on April 10!! I have always loved this magical photo. It’s called ‘Wind Fire (Therese Duncan on the Acropolis)’ and is by Edward Steichen. He made this photograph on the Acropolis in 1921, while on an impromptu vacation in the company of the legendary modern dancer Isadora Duncan and her young female pupils, frequently referred to as ‘Isadorables.’ [The Isadorables!!!!!!] The subject, Therese Duncan was an adopted daughter of Isadora Duncan. The image was illustrated in Vanity Fair in June 1923. It’s really amazing to see an early print of this image in person so many years since I saw it as a teenager in one my very first photography books. Should I do a new podcast about it? Elliot Erwitt passed away on November 29 at the age of 95. His candid photographs, often dripping with what his website calls “benevolent irony,” are some of my favorites. Many are solidly ensconced in the halls of my mental museum of great images. For instance, how about ‘U. S. A,’ which shows a family of 4 seated together on their sofa, each wearing an utterly priceless expression. Anyone who comes up with an alter ego called “André S. Solidor” (abbreviation: A.S.S.) to poke fun at the art world is great in my book. Sometimes things come in for sale and before I can even catalogue I have to figure out what I’m even looking at. Such was the case with a group of 5 sixth-plate tintypes that were part of the Pier 24 Photography from the Pilara Family Foundation collection. Each photograph had hand-applied pigment and was mounted to a sheet of metal with a half-circle cut out and spring on the reverse. I had never seen anything like them! On the reverse of some (but not all) were label fragments from something called the McCaskey Register Company of Alliance, Ohio. Ah! They were used in an accounting system for a merchant in order to keep track of tabs in a shop! I was unable to find any other examples of these metal sheets with tintypes affixed but plenty of examples showing metal plates fitting snugly into oak organizers with the company logo. The most amazing set of portrait photographs that I was privileged to work on sold yesterday for £445,500 @sothebys. These 14 daguerreotypes show Sir John Franklin and fellow officers of his expedition taken by the Richard Beard studio on 15-17 May 1845 on board HMS Erebus shortly before the ship departed with HMS Terror in search of the North West Passage, never to return. As an unapologetic photo nerd, this is absolutely one of my favorite lots to ever have researched. We had a terrific essay in the catalogue online but will share just a teaser from an earlier post by @fenellaart : “If these mirrored black and white photographs look a little ghostly, that’s not too far from the truth. These are the surviving portraits of ill-fated crew of the HMS Erebus and Terror, taken en plein air on board the Erebus just three days before it set sail, never to be seen again. These exceptionally early photographs were produced when photography was in its infancy, and this set was believed lost until now. The crew had one mission: to chart the notoriously dangerous Northwest passage. They were given three years’ worth of supplies and set off on 19 May 1845, captained by Sir John Franklin, from whose family this set belong. After two years with not a word back from the 134 men, Franklin’s wife desperately pushed for a search party to be sent. A prize equivalent to £2 million was offered but the searches were fruitless; in fact, more men and ships were lost searching than in the expedition itself. It became a Victorian mystery, leading to 25 rescue parties over four decades. As was announced today in @nytimes Sotheby’s Photographs is gearing up for “Photographer Unknown,” the next auction of @pier24photography from the Pilara Family Foundation Sold to Benefit Charitable Organizations. These photographs, largely taken by individuals whose names are now lost to time, belong to an important element of the History of Photography: the vernacular. The Pilara Family Foundation’s collection of vernacular photography—including snapshots by hobbyists, hand-colored commercial portraiture, occupational photo badges, press imagery, boxing headshots, and souvenir albums—are some of the best examples associated with the genre. Every photograph has a story and these images are evidence of the many ways the medium has been utilized since its invention, from crime fighting, to documentation, to advertising. @aimeepflieger and I could not be more excited for bidding to open (9/26-10/3)! Instead of simply taking a picture of ship at its launch, this photographer, Robert Howlett, has cleverly demonstrated the size and power of the vessel by posing a person in front of its launching chains. This particular person, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (that name!) was a British engineer and a giant of the Industrial Revolution. 1845, 2 vessels were set to traverse the final unnavigated sections of the Northwest Passage: the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. The crew sat on the deck of the Erebus to be photographed. If you know the story (and watched ‘The Terror’ on AMC) you already know that the expedition met with disaster after the 2 ships became icebound, under circumstances still not fully understood to this day. 🧊 These portraits, hailing from the dawn of photography, represent the first, and last, time that Franklin and his men had their photographs taken.
