A ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning at the new Beacon Point complex means the doors are officially open to the UNC Health Multispecialty Care, Advance Careplex, and Self-Help Credit Union branch location. Located at 1425 Promise Beacon Circle, the clinic welcomes primary and specialty care patients, including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and treatment for sickle cell disease. The Self-Help Credit Union will provide financial services, including first-time homebuyer education. Today’s occasion was celebrated with residents, community partners, and funders and marked the start of a rolling schedule of openings that will take place through the fall. Future openings include Legal Aid of North Carolina, Family Resource Center, and a locally owned restaurant. In addition, thanks to a grant of $507K from the City of Raleigh, Southeast Raleigh Promise will relocate its offices to Beacon Point this fall. The Southeast Raleigh Promise’s offices will include a nonprofit suite and community conference-classroom. Beacon Point is the final development phase at the Beacon Site, Raleigh/Wake County’s first Purpose Built Communities place-based partnership, co-developed with the Southeast Raleigh Promise, YMCA of the Triangle, Wake County Public Schools, DHIC, and Self-Help. It’s the final Southeast Raleigh Promise pillar to complete our Beacon Site, the 32-acre, place-based model on Rock Quarry Road that is focused on achieving improved outcomes in those four areas for everybody in our community. It’s already home to Southeast Raleigh Elementary School, the Southeast Raleigh YMCA, and Beacon Ridge affordable apartment homes. Today, we toured Beacon Point, a 43,000 square foot development across two buildings, including a two-story commercial-retail complex and a new branch of the Self-Help Credit Union. It’s at 1425 Promise Beacon Circle, the last parcel of land to be developed in our local expression of a Purpose Built Community, the first-ever in Raleigh and only the 16th in the nation. The first tenants will move in in late April, followed by rolling openings through fall. Joined by some of our partners, board members and staff, and Beacon Point tenants, Aspen Romeyn, a real estate associate with Self Help, our partner and project developer, led the tour. Spring is coming in hot, so the farm is revving up! In these 2nd year no-till beds, we are broadforking and applying a generous 1-2” layer of compost to build up our soil organic matter and smother weeds. We are lucky to be located near the @wakegov @raleighgov composting facility that recently won recognition from the US @compostingcouncil as the large-scale composter of the year! Within a few blocks of his lifelong residence in the historic South Park Community, a street, “Top Greene Lane,” was named in his honor, and in recognition of Top Green’s role in helping people get housing. On the corner just south of his home, the “John P. Top Greene Community Center” was also named in his honor. The construction of a community center for South Park residents was a goal for Top Greene. Lonnette Williams: They used to call him “Mr. South Park.” They named the street after Top Greene in recognition of his role in helping people get housing. Top Greene’s uncle, Charles A. Haywood, Sr., a founder of the funeral home, was involved in housing. His uncle started him getting involved in housing opportunities for African American people. South Park is a redevelopment area. HUD [United States Department of Housing and Urban Development] grants were available to the City for people at certain income levels, and he worked with the City on creating some of those first-time homebuyer programs, and educating the public about home buying programs that were available. He worked to spread the word amongst people in the community, so that they would know how to get the money and even grants to help people to fix their homes up, when they needed to have that resource available to them. There were a lot of abandoned houses in the area. He helped with getting the neighborhood cleaned up and reducing elements that cause crime to be pervasive throughout the community, and getting the resources, the infrastructure into the neighborhood so that people have better quality of life in the area. John P. “Top” Greene proudly served 2 years in the United States Army. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Upon leaving the military, he joined the family business, the Haywood Funeral Home, where he worked with his uncle and cousins for more than 40 years. A lifelong South Park native, Top Greene’s years in the service were the only part of his life he lived outside the neighborhood. Lonnette Williams: Top Greene was involved in forming a citizens group. (This group preceded the CAC’s.) They were adamant about making sure that the community members had their needs addressed. In fact, the Top Greene Center was one of the projects that they advocated for because they didn't have a place to have meetings. They advocated to have a neighborhood center built here in South Park, so that they would have a place to meet. During that time, there was a proposal from the city to run the East-West expressway through South Park, which would have destroyed about five or six churches. Multiple homes would have been destroyed. They fought against that. Members of Leadership Raleigh spent time sprucing up the strawberry🍓 beds at our Beacon Site Community Garden. The garden grows right outside Southeast Raleigh Elementary School, along the entryway to the YMCA. Each year, roughly 600 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables are grown in the garden and given away to community residents. This week, more than two dozen strawberry plants saved during the replanting expressly for our neighbors lined the garden walkway as giveaways. “I want anybody who has a place to plant a plant to plant some strawberries,” said John Thomas, a master gardener who oversees the garden for our community. Our new farmstand building is here! This type of roadside produce stand used to be more common in our area, but as subdivisions have replaced farmland, they’ve slowly disappeared. After considering loads of different options for a structure over the last year, we decided on an Amish-made shed building as our farm store. Y’all! I had the opportunity to engage with a few of our teens through our Southeast Raleigh Teen Fellowship @ser_ymca . The synergy was at an all-time high. We worked on vision boards, goal setting, and putting your “plays” into action (so we can begin to develop habits). I had a few teens come to me and share how much they enjoyed the time. #BreakingNews in Raleigh NC Students returned back to school today from Thanksgiving holiday break just to be put on a code red lockdown after a fight broke out and two students were stabbed with serious injures. Two ambulances were seen leaving the school, each followed by a police vehicle. "He's losing consciousness right now. We're in the main gym," said a woman's voice over law enforcement radio traffic. A male's voice can be heard saying, "Can you make sure the administrators put the school on lockdown?" There were around a dozen police vehicles, as well as EMS and first responders at the school, and yellow police tape was stretched across an entryway. Police were blocking both entrances to the school and parents were asked not to come to campus; however, around half a dozen cars could be seen waiting to enter the school grounds – presumably parents waiting to get to their children. Adwoa Asante: I serve as the Director of Operations at Southeast Raleigh Table, a local church, and also as a Body Liberation Ambassador at Current Wellness. At my church, we really care about doing no harm and creating safe space for spirituality. We're building partnerships around the church. People know that they can come to us, ask questions, and make requests of us. We really care about who our neighbors are. At Current Wellness, I get to help members of our gym and wellness space celebrate their best selves. We are a space and community centered on developing holistic and healing relationships with our bodies. In both roles, I get to co-create structures to support people as they transform. It’s what I love most about the work I do. Whether it’s coordinating details for an event, developing protocol around the use of space, or leading teams, I get to cheer people on as they make magic happen! I live in Southeast Raleigh and have high hopes for our community. I hope that its residents who have been here a long time can stay in Southeast Raleigh. I know that we are experiencing a lot of change, and people are being uprooted. But I want people who have called Raleigh home to still be able to do that, and whatever ways we can come alongside them to make that possible. This cool Workforce crew removed 800 pounds of litter from New Bern Avenue today. We even hauled off bags that had been left from past cleanups done by other groups. 🙄 If you hadn’t heard, we’ve partnered with A Place at the Table to employ residents experiencing hardship. Employees make $18 an hour, we provide transport and Table provides breakfast. 🥞 The best part is how much those that participate appreciate the opportunity to earn as opposed to being given a handout. What differentiates this plaza from others is that every tenant in this new shopping center is a black-owned small business. Mainly it will be an entrepreneurial hub featuring a medical center, restaurant, salon, photography studio, event center and more. “I am feeling very good. This ribbon cutting signifies the completion of the plaza in the heart of Southeast Raleigh. Next is the hard work, getting the tenants moved in to serve the community.” said James Montague The plaza houses a total of 14 commercial spaces. All 14 have already been leased out. Bourda - As a call to action to end gun violence in the community, Southeast Raleigh residents gathered at the Martin Luther King Memorial Gardens Thursday for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of gun violence victims. Scottie Barnes, the founder of Katch the Kite Youth Outreach, Tim Prince of Team Truth 919 non-profit, organized the memorial event. “This event is very dear to me and many people. We have to remember those who we have lost. We want to stop the violence in our community and it is important that we do something for the community.” Barnes said the memorial event shows there's more work to be done. Honoring Raleighs Historic Black Neighborhoods “ Porchfest” - Saturdays event titled “ Porchfest”, was held in honor of Raleigh’s historic black neighborhoods. Dozens of Raleigh residents, community leaders, and clergy gathered at the Tarboro Road Community Center in Raleigh Saturday for an afternoon of learning and fellowship. Keynote speakers included Nasir Mated ( NC House Of Representatives District 99), James Montague ( CEO of F7 International Development), community member Willie Stokes, and many more. Throughout the event, speakers spoke briefly on how those historic neighborhoods came about and continuing its legacy.
