We're in the process of moving house at the moment and in the new garden is this pear tree...the leaning tower of Pyrus! I love the irony that I have this fruit tree in my garden and there is so much wrong with it. I can easily fix it. However, as a big Japanese garden/plant fan, I love the potential I can see once our japanese patio is relocated. A borrowed landscape! So, fix it or keep it? I may attempt a bit of both. 🍐 Pears are very heavy and the branches will easily snap if I don't tip the branches back to strengthen them. Also if we do get a vast percentage of the potential crop you can see, the weight of the fruit will help pull the tree over completely. The tree is pulling the stake over so there's nothing stopping it. A little push on the tree shows it won't take much to be laying on the floor one day. 🍐 Some of the limbs are too thick and are taking vigour away from above, you can see there is not a good balance within the tree. (nothing the do with the wonk!) 🍐 There is an obvious centre leader but you can also just about see a gnarly, vigorous branch coming off it which is making that centre leader very weak. 🍐 We also need to be able to mow under it. When the fruit comes in, the branches will be even lower. I don't enjoy mowing lawns with a normal mower (Give me a tractor and topper/pulveriser anyday!) so I need to make that as easy as possible. So, I will reinstate the centre leader and won't tip this back because I want the tree to get taller and don't want to encourage any more vigour back into the tree this year. I will sort out the post and straighten the tree a little-ish (all the rain we've had will make this easy) and thin out some of the branches. It's a shame because I love it as it is and it's going to loose a lot of the charm it has...but it will be worth it. Jules Allan's atmospheric paintings are created in a constant state of revision, by layering, scraping and dissolving the paint in the hope of distilling the essence of a state of mind. The process is performative with the materials being subject to actions like being torn, stitched, layered and wrinkled. The surface of the paintings reveals the process -concrete, plaster, raw canvas and delicate stitching combine with monochromatic areas of black or grey as well as lighter tones that can refer to human biology. Appropriately training trees is a little involved, but is not particularly difficult. The greater difficulty is convincing a client or customer to remove & replace an ugly &/or leaning tree, depending of course on the direction of which the lean is occurring. Look, sometimes it makes better sense to rip off the bandage & get that pain over with, provided you move forward with that tree's training in mind. The pictured Mesquite sports a gangster lean toward the landscape & not toward pedestrian or street traffic, which means that it may not be replaced until the tree falls over. A very compelling reason to get that tree up sooner than later is the cost to do so. Not only does the cost to chop up & take away a tree increase with greater size (bigger & heavier trees cost more to remove), but inflation is a contributing factor. Ultimately, the longer one waits to remove a tree like this the pricier the endeavor becomes. It is unclear as to what the owner of the pictured Mesquite will do, but we hope to inspire a sense of urgency & value therein. The sooner the ugly Mesquite is replaced with even another Mesquite, albeit better trained, the sooner the owner will reap the rewards. Sure they'll have better curb appeal & aesthetics, but they'll also have a practical tree because it may eventually offer shade to the sidewalks & streets. This leaning specimen will only (erroneously) shade the Baja Ruellia, which are also erroneously being sheared.
