I'm always interested to see how I'll need to adjust my displays based on the space and lighting available at different venues. For this @imadeitmarket show @rockwell_park, I added two black battery-powered lamps, one of which you can see here. They're unobtrusive, they don't take up much table space, and I can adjust their heights to accommodate different setups--exactly what I needed for displaying my jewelry to best advantage! It's a Fond-Memory Friday! This necklace was the first piece I ever sold at a holiday craft show, and it's a good early example of how drawn I was (and still am) to combining different colors, shapes, and textures. Back then, I mostly used toggle clasps and mainly chose sterling silver or goldfill for my metal components. This "Fountain" bracelet was inspired by a chapter of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel _The Marble Faun_. The passage focuses on love as well as on how guilt can lead to loss of harmony with the natural and supernatural worlds. The poignancy and beauty of this part of the novel moved me to design the bracelet as well as coordinating earrings and a necklace. I chose to feature pebble-shaped aquamarine beads for this piece in honor of the fountain Hawthorne describes, and I accented them with other stones in different colors and textures and with sterling-silver findings. I love the organic shapes of the aquamarine--even though they made stringing three strands of equal length a challenge. I took a lot of care to balance the shades of yellow, green, and blue as well as the lighter and darker tans in this piece. It was definitely a labor of love. Story time! I was at a craft show last weekend when another vendor walked by my booth, looked at it with an unimpressed expression, said tonelessly, “Well, that’s . . . different,” and then walked away--right after I popped out from where I was arranging things and greeted her with an extra-big smile and hello. 😅 Yeah, it’s different. Because I’m different. And so is my brand. And so are my products. I have exactly the mix of elegance, playfulness, wit, and groundedness that my customers 🥰 and I like. Why did I have pink feathers in my displays? Because Valentine’s Day is coming. Because they’re playful. The outdoor color palette here in SW PA today is mostly white, gray, and brown. The indoor color palette, however, includes aqua, green, blue-green, a dash of copper, and a dose of silver. 😍 The snow seems to be over, at least for now. But I'm forecasting a 100% chance of joy.
Marking every stitch did the trick! I actually finished this yesterday, but didn’t have a chance to post. The neck gaiter part folds up to make a traditional hat brim, but he did not want to take another pic. I’ll take what I can get. 😌 • I think it turned out well, with a few minor issues. I had to use a much larger hook than suggested to make gauge. Not a huge deal, but it did mean a surprising number of gauge swatches. The stitch used for the body of the hat looks really nice and also seems to eliminate the spiral effect typical of crochet worked in the round without turns, but it took much longer to work that part than I expected. Needing to mark every stitch was my own fault for choosing to work with black yarn. I’m certain the stitches would have been much easier to see if I’d been working with something lighter. Straight off the hook, I was disappointed. In spite of making gauge and following the pattern exactly, it seemed too small. The bottom edge of the neck gaiter was too tight to even try to fold it up. But after a wash with fabric softener and a turn in the dryer, it relaxed a good bit and now fits well. I would consider making another, but not as a last minute gift idea or a rush job (and not in black!) ACORN+IRON+ONION TOTE BAG! I'm trying to come up with a name for this bag, but it has so many details to bring it together that makes it hard to pick just one! It's constructed with slow precision and detail using a vintage pillowcase! Hand dyed with the acorns foraged from the beautiful oak trees scattered around Highland Park, which turned into a mix of greys using ferrous sulfate. Also, it was finished with a lining from a bedsheet dyed with a collection of onion skins given to me by the lovely workers at Piggly Wiggly on Clairmont. Working up a new-to-me pattern with a new stitch and a medium-firm gauge in black yarn is hard. 😫😫😫 After several frogs, I finally broke down and marked every stitch. 2023 was “The Year of the Market” I attended 9 markets as a craft vendor in a span of 8 months in 2023. It should have been 10, but that’s market life…unpredictable sometimes! I couldn’t be more proud of myself for putting my art and products out into the world for people to see and touch. The feedback I got on my handmade items was so helpful in deciding how to even further niche down and give my target audience products they really want! The connections I made with other vendors and shoppers was my very favorite aspect of markets, and I would often leave feeling high on the interactions I had that day. I also got a taste of how to adjust products to sell based on how people interacted with my items. One main thing I learned about market vending is… ALWAYS HAVE SMALL ITEMS at a lower price point to mix into your more expensive products. During the summer months I found many people weren’t looking for wall art but they were willing to splurge on a keychain or magnet that caught their eye.
