A raccoon decides to investigate my camera box while foraging along the edge of a wetland. Resourceful and extremely adaptable, raccoons can exploit a number of resources, but without human food sources, wetlands are their preferred habitat. Their sense of smell and sensitive hands, which are not very different from our own, allow them to pinpoint and feel for prey under water. The importance of protecting wetland systems goes beyond just raccoons. Protecting natural spaces, especially along riparian corridors, puts beavers back in the driver's seat, allowing them to sculpt the landscape and increase biodiversity. However, protected properties also allow forests to grow older. In New England, old deciduous trees, especially oaks, maples, and beech, tend to form cavities as they age. Larger diameter trees with cavities, whether standing or on the ground, are a necessity for secondary cavity users (animals that don't make their own cavity but instead use existing cavities). Species such as raccoons, fishers, barred owls, wood ducks, mergansers, and so many others require cavities of particular diameters to raise their young, and for resting. It isn't over yet, northern lights could still be seen early this morning. This was taken on Squam Lake at 1:46AM today. On Tuesday, I walked out on a property owned by @squamlakesconservationsociety , a local land trust on Squam Lake and who I used to work for. I set one of my camera traps facing a couple bobcat scrapes I had found over the weekend. I had a really good feeling about this set because of how fresh one of the scrapes was and the number of scrapes (four in total of varying ages). Bobcats like edges, and they especially like wetland edges. Wetland edges often draw a wider variety of prey species, like rabbits, hares, small mammals, and birds, than other habitats. Thus, bobcats focus their attention there. Knowing this fact was what made me investigate along this wetland for bobcat sign in the first place. After just three nights, I checked the camera set, fearing that a curious black bear may have found my setup. However, as I walked up, everything was how I left it. Opening the camera box, the first images I saw were of the bobcat walking across the frame, and my mind was a mixture of disbelief and excitement!
