Are you a clinician caring for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD)? If yes, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has an opportunity for you to enhance your skills and improve patient outcomes. Join experienced clinicians at VUMC who have developed an ECHO I/DD training program designed to foster an all-teach/all-learn environment. The program will consist of live video-conferencing sessions that meet twice a month for an hour for six months, starting in May 2024. By participating in this program, you will not only enhance your skills but also be compensated for your valuable time. Moreover, the sessions will count for CME, adding to your professional development. The sessions will include managing co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions, supporting adults with I/DD in the clinic, housing, and community support, supporting families/caregivers, post-secondary education and employment, and more. 🧐 Something you might not know about me… ✌🏼I volunteer as a Paralympic Classifer for World @paraathletics & the International Paralympic Committee, classifying athletes in the Intellectual Impairment (II) category. Something totally different to my day job! 🏟️ I travel to international para-athletics events once or twice a year and carry out a variety of assessments to make sure athletes are eligible to compete in the next Paralympic Games. 💡Here I am with my co-classifier for this competition Eva, a doctor from Belgium 🤗 🌍 I’ve been qualified as an international classifier since 2012, when the updated II eligibility process was introduced & have been fortunate to travel to competitions all over the world since then. ❤️🔥 I absolutely love it! I am always blown away by the ability and achievements of the athletes, just so impressive - especially when I am not athletic myself AT ALL. 🫶🏼I love working with the other classifiers (including physical & visual impairment classifiers) who are all so fabulous and come from all corners of the globe. Sometimes we will go several years without being allocated to the same competition and then it’s great to catch up when we coincide. 🧬 It’s also exciting to have been part of the development of the classification process so far, and part of ongoing scientific research to be able to expand the II category in future. 🥇 All in all, it’s great! A childhood friendship sparked Ken Oakes' lifelong dedication to the disability community. His mom's cousin Louise had Down syndrome and was only ten years older than him, making her part of Ken's inner circle growing up. This early exposure ignited a drive to serve, though he didn't know where it would lead him yet. College first opened the doors to teaching children with disabilities. Though hesitant at first, as Ken shares, “I fell in love with it.” He applied to teach at a summer school for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the G.A. Barber Center run by The Arc of Erie County. For the next 47 years, he devoted his career to special education and as an advocate for children and adults with disabilities and their families. Ken will never forget his first day. His students, 7 of whom were full-time wheelchair users and 3 of whom had IDD, spent their whole day in one classroom. “They didn’t get art, they didn’t get physical education, they didn’t go to the library,” explains Ken. “Because of The Arc, I knew that was wrong. We started eating lunch at a separate table in the cafeteria and going to the gym and library by ourselves. After a couple of weeks, I told my principal that I’d like my students to go to general education classes. By the end of the first quarter, all my kids were in some general education classes, which helped them make friends. Soon my kids were having lunch with their new friends, not at a separate table in the cafeteria or our classroom.” “Because of The Arc, all kids go to public school now, and in my state, nobody lives in an institution anymore. To know I had a tiny bit to do with that is what I’m most proud of." “I want people to understand that The Arc has been here from the beginning and will be here for the future. We’re never going to stop making life better, one day at a time." As for Louise, her parents kept her sheltered at home until her 40's, when they passed away. Louise was placed in a group home. She hated it at first. “But little by little, she came to love it. Louise blossomed...and those years were her best."

🚨 NEW PUBLICATION 🚨 Thank you to all who participated in the Braine Gene Registry research and made your data available! 🧬 Of the 479 total participants in the Brain Gene Registry (BGR), variants in 241 unique genes were reported and CACNA1A had the most reported (n=26)! As a result, the researchers were able to compare anti-seizure medications used by the CACNA1A community with the rest of the participants. Our adult participants went bowling earlier in the week! 🎳 When we say "Lifelong Learning Program" we mean that, truly, our programs promote learning throughout the lives of our adult participants and also at all times and in all settings. We are very proud of our day program centers, but adventures into the community are a key component of what we do--so that our participants can experience all that life has to offer with the supports that fit each of them and in the company of their community. Bowling is a fun strengthening activity that is accessible to a wide spectrum of abilities. But with this crew, we know that fun is always the priority! She, with Tina and Anjana, three of the four saleswomen with intellectual disabilities employed at the Sargasheshi handicraft place in Kozhikode, rattle off the benefits and prices of the artefacts like seasoned professionals. Anushree, the fourth salesperson, is not there on the April day we visit the place. But all four faces have become familiar to many on social media after news of their success story began spreading. “The perception has always been that people with intellectual disabilities cannot work or earn for themselves, that they will always be dependent on others. Success stories like these are changing that,” says Dr MK Jayaraj, who is one of the main forces behind the Sargasheshi initiative.
