On July 1st declawing will be banned in VA unless a cat owner gets a note from a doctor saying they have a health issue like diabetes, thin skin, allergies, immune issues, etc. and need their cat declawed to protect their health or life. In other words, it's pretty much status quo for declawing in VA. If a physician signs a note like that they will actually be putting that cat owner's health at a higher and dangerous risk because declawed cats often start biting. Not very wise for any doctor to take that liability risk. Unfortunately the @richmondspca , @vfhs1 , @bestfriendsanimalsociety and @peta sided with the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association who wanted this owner's health amendment so that their member vets can keep declawing cats. Happy National NO declawing day! Declawing is the inhumane practice of amputating the last bone in each of your cat's toes on his/her paws. This is like cutting off your first knuckle for a human, ouch! Not only is this a painful process but it also causes your pet a lot of pain down the road. For example: paw pain, back pain, tissue necrosis, arthritis, and lameness. If the procedure is done incorrectly, the pets nails can start growing again under the skin causing severe pain, bone spurs, and nerve damage. While declawing is considered unethical and over a dozen countries have banned the procedure, there are unfortunately still some states that allow it. If you or a loved one cannot get scratched for medical reasons or the pet is scratching furniture then there are many ways to help prevent this unwanted yet natural behavior. Some prevention you may pursue include: soft paws (gel like nail caps), trimming the cats nails on a regular basis, provide alternative options (make sure to give positive reinforcement when they use said object), double sided tape, and/or rubbing their scent on the object they want to scratch as they may be wanting to spread their smell on the item. Pookie was a returned kitten 2 years later, and violated with toe tip amputation and paw pad mutilation, still often referred to as "declaw" thus causing her serious pain and longterm arthritis in her joints. The Paw Project stepped up and she was the recipient of an expensive paw repair surgery @kindnessanimaloftulsa and thanks in huge part to our generous ARF donors ๐๐ป Pookie's turnaround after surgery is life changing, she will still have forever struggles, but her new mama Paula says: "She is doing great.
