New images recently surfaced from the depths of my archive. 16.5" X 23.4" Indigo is the colour of wisdom, intuition, inner awareness of spirituality, allowing for deep focus during meditation. We all have impossible dreams. For the elephant it's flight, a paradox achieved not by rising above the ground, but going beneath it, below the surface of the ocean. I made three trips to India to photograph an elephant swimming underwater in the Andaman Sea, while working on my book Elephant! (Thames & Hudson). Visibility was poor so the opportunities for good photographs in the dense ocean were limited. I persisted, returning repeatedly, until I had a strong body of work. Sometimes dogged persistence pays off. That's the artist's lot: the drive to push and twist and grind and wait for that magic - to harness forever, emotions that cannot be expressed in words. The jellyfish were inspired by the story of Diana Nyad, who swam from Cuba to Florida, getting stung by box jellies. Our #choberiversafari was full of surprises! First of all, we set off in gorgeous sunshine ☀️ full of excitement, and within a short time, the weather had changed into proper thunderstorms ⛈️ and rain ☔️. Not a pleasant experience if you are in the middle of a river full of #hippos and #crocs on a tiny boat! But we were in luck! Day74: the OG Snorkel First few days into our time in Andaman, I had this vision. I mentioned it to a friend; “oh there was an elephant in Havelock island who used to swim in the sea.” I got intrigued and googled it. The images which emerged were exactly the elephant I’d seen!
