Not a good photo but i drove past my old job today at Talbot Hall. A blast from the past. This job was one of the most fascinating ones I’ve had (and I’ve had some doozys). I had the opportunity to chat with murderers, drugs dealers, robbers & thieves, but most importantly i learned that there’s hardly ever any bad people. There’s just people who sometimes do bad things. I learned to appreciate the value of human life. The quad is in bloom again! I remember the first time I visited LMH, the sun was just beginning to set behind Talbot Hall and the quad's wildflowers were in full bloom, and I knew right then and there that the Sorting Hat had chosen rightly for me. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Upon hearing the tragic news, a group of African American students at East Texas State University organized that very evening to form the African American Student Society of East Texas (ASSET). ASSET delivered a list of demands to President D. Whitney Halladay which called for equal treatment in housing and other areas of university life, courses in black literature and history, and the addition of black faculty and staff members. The following fall semester, Dr. David Arlington Talbot was hired as a professor of counseling and guidance, becoming ET’s first African American faculty member. On June 5, 1964, the Texas State Teachers College Board of Regents ordered all state teachers colleges, including East Texas State College, to admit “all qualified applicants, regardless of race.” President James Gee called a meeting of all university employees and stated that ET would integrate at the start of the second summer term and that all employees were to comply wholeheartedly with the decree. Dr. Jack Bell, Head of the Department of Communications, sent a memo to the news media stating, “In short, so far as we are concerned, integration is an accomplished fact; and we propose to treat it just that way.
