English below. Tadaa! I have crochet this vest for my kid. The yarn is from my wedding dress and from my husbands grandmother. The buttons is from my grandmother. Needle size 1,75mm So I believe it is filled with love ❤️ There is no pattern. Everything is freeformcrochet. Every animal is an arctic animal. My child has been very interested in whales after seeing the vest, and we are talking a lot about whales and the rest of the animals. #freeformcrochet #crochet #articanimals #reuse #crochetwithlove #crochetvest #childsvest #kidsvest #kidsclothes #twoyearsold #grandmotherslove #loveanimals #jullinarts #motherlove #talkaboutclimatechange #fauna #frihåndshækling #hækling #hækle #arktiskedyr #genbrug #genbrugsgarn #hækletmedkærlighed #hæklettilbaby #hækletvest #børnetøj #børnevest #bestemorsgarn #bedstemorkærlighed #moderkærlighed

All climate emotions are understandable, including feelings of doom from climate scientists as described in the recent Guardian article that’s been shared a lot this week. (Not the article in the posted photo—keep reading!) But I believe it’s my responsibility as a psychologist in the public eye working on climate change to help emotionally contain and hold emotion rather than amplify it unnecessarily or without adequate information. Feelings matter—but the psychology of what we do as human beings with our feelings matters just as much. When we feel doomed, many of us are less likely to act on climate change, which is a self-fulfilling prophecy of destruction. I believe strongly that psychologists must take that seriously on a population level as well as individually. The direction of our influence on mental health is important. I heard a live interview by @michaelmannscientist today, hosted by The Guardian and scheduled prior to the recent publication on climate scientists. He talked about this piece for the Financial Times’ Sustainable Views that he and @katharinehayhoe wrote in response to it. https://www.sustainableviews.com/the-antidote-to-doom-is-doing-ac97ab67/ He noted in his interview that not all of the IPCC scientists in the article are the ones who crunch the data, and that there’s a difference between “pessimism” (which the scientists in the Guardian article were experiencing) and “a deterministic scientific statement.” That the internet and social media don’t usually distinguish between those two things of course benefits polluters/the fossil fuel industry because readers fall prey to thinking it’s too late. Our feelings matter, but giving up when there is realistically still more we can do—according to scientists!—is disastrous. In my work, I always try to amplify science, not be led by headlines. It’s critically important. (Yes, I note the irony here of sharing this article on a social platform!) #climatechange #realistichope #talkaboutclimatechange #psychologyandclimate #climatepsychology #nature #saveourplanet #actonclimate #mentalhealthandclimatechange #climateemotions #climatedoomism

Many thanks to Charles (Charlie) Starkman, Psy.D., LP and Sara Byczek at Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Michigan-Dearborn @umdearborn for inviting me to speak recently on the psychology of climate change! We had a jam-packed hour talking about environmental justice, the ethics on why psychologists need to do climate work, the data on climate emotions, and more. The students had thoughtful, insightful questions, and, as I told them, it gives me hope to teach this material to them and to plant a seed for now and for the future. We need more clinicians who are knowledgeable about climate change and mental health. Students at UM-Dearborn come from all over Michigan, as well as outside the state, and the university itself is located in a city at the forefront of environmental justice concerns. Dearborn is home to a vibrant Arab American community, with Arab Americans making up 55% of its population, the highest among US cities. It’s also home to the auto industry—Henry Ford built his auto steel factory there and it continues to this day as the place where Ford manufactures its F-150 truck. Dearborn is in Wayne County (also home to Detroit), one of the most polluted areas of the country. Ford, Cleveland-Cliffs Steel, US Steel, and Marathon Oil, which refines some of the oil from Canadian oil pipeline Line 5, are some of the major industrial players, emitting pollutants that negatively and disproportionately harm nearby residents. The psychologist sprinting giddily toward @katharinehayhoe at the end of her talk Weds evening in Ann Arbor? Um, yeah…that was me. (Sprinting only inside my head, though. I think I managed a calm walk up to the stage even though I wanted to leap up and give her a high-five.😆) Why, in particular? (Aside from the fact that she’s one of my climate heroes.) Because when it comes to climate change, emotion is where it’s at, and she had just given a masterclass in how to connect an audience with their positive climate emotions, and then their climate emotions to climate action. Inspiration and a sense of possibility were coursing through the room. As a climate psychologist who centers this in my own work, I was both moved and thrilled to watch a large audience learn experientially that we can act on climate because we feel love and care for other people and all living things. And it’s a circular process—when we act, we feel good. When I was at @climaterealityproject in NYC recently, Al Gore lightheartedly asked if there had been any embarrassing (ie, very human) moments activists might have had in their work. Sandy Field of @saveoursusquehannapa straightforwardly declared, “No….Doing this makes me feel proud of myself.” It was a breathtaking and beautiful reply in its deep truth about our emotions and its acknowledgement of how meaningful climate action is, not just to the rest of the world, but to our own selves. Our emotions are central to our human experience and at the core of who we are. When we open to the possibility of our care and love being underneath our fears, we can find ground to stand on to fight *for* something instead of simply *against.* It’s a powerful shift that can move us forward. Thank you, @katharinehayhoe, for bringing your wisdom and inspiration to Michigan. Let’s do this, everyone. 💚🌎💚🌎 #talkaboutclimatechange #actonclimatechange #ecoanxiety #climateanxiety #ecoemotions #climatechange #climateemotions #loveourplanet #loveourplanet🌎 #wecanmakeadifference #nature #loveforfuturegenerations

Registration has just opened and I’m excited to be presenting on climate change and mental health at the American Psychological Association’s annual convention in Seattle this August! My short talk is on “Helping Young Adults with Climate Emotions: Meaning and Motivation at a Tipping Point of Their Own.” Looking forward to being in a data blitz session entitled “Emotions and Climate Change Anxiety in Young Adults” along with colleagues Jen Myers, Zoey Rogers, and Sabine Huemer. Here’s the link to our session: https://lnkd.in/evEiKpDX Due to carbon emissions, traveling to Seattle from Michigan for a conference isn’t a decision I make lightly. To make it something I felt ok about doing, I’m trying to maximize my time there: In addition to my talk and celebrating the 50th anniversary celebration of my grad school at APA, I’m bundling together several events before and after the convention, including social-professional in-person times with various colleagues I’ve known only on a screen and a couple of visits with old friends I rarely see. For those of you who are deciding whether to go to the convention, I urge you to consider your flights, as flying is a leading cause of carbon emissions. As psychologists and therefore specialists in behavior, I think it’s critical that we confront the ethics of the behavior of thousands of us flying to conventions while climate change rages on around us. (And this isn’t true only of APA’s convention, of course.) Some of the convention is offered as a hybrid option, so that’s something to consider. Or consider waiting until the next APA convention is closer to you. If you do attend in person, consider bundling by scheduling other professional or personal activities/events outside convention time as well. And if you’re traveling around to do those things, don’t forget you can take public transportation or request an EV ride by using Uber Green or Lyft’s Green Mode. #climatechangeandmentalhealth #talkaboutclimatechange #ecoanxiety #climateanxiety #apa2024 #youngpeopleandclimatechange #climatechange #climatedistress #ecoemotions #climateawaretherapy #ecotherapy #clinicalpsychology #copingwithclimate

I’ll have more to say about it later, because my mind is brimming with thoughts and feelings after the @climatereality training in NYC (one of my kids goes to school in NY state, so the location made sense, but Michiganders, take note that it’s being offered in Detroit in October!). So many inspiring talks and inspiring attendees at the largest CRP training ever (3,000 people!). And in the midst of all those people, it was awesome to be able to meet up in real life with climate psych colleagues @anyakamenetz and @climateactivismlab! Some of the other attendees at our tables over the course of three days included a businessperson from Djibouti who’s teaching her compatriots about climate change in the face of being one of the countries most damaged by climate change in the world (see here for more info: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/climate-and-people/shortages-food-water-electricity-djibouti-has-destroyed-climate/); a woman from Bali who told us how, due to changes in temps and growing conditions, there are rice shortages with resultant food insecurity and how now rice has to often be imported; a retired physician from Puerto Rico who told us about the small islands there lost to sea level rise; many people who work in all kinds of climate-related fields; many who are already activists and some who are wanting to have a place to start and a community to join with; and more. It was a communal experience with 3,000 climate warriors, with the goal of taking climate action and achieving climate justice. So glad to have been a part of it. #leadwithclimatereality #climaterealityproject #talkaboutclimatechange #wecanmakeadifference #saveourplanet #natureconnection #nature

Being in totality was an extraordinarily moving experience, one I think I’ll be processing a while. We were alone, sitting on the edge of a small farm field, next to a stand of trees filled with birds—perfection. Such magnificence. We even saw the solar prominences, which were incredible—searing spots of red followed quickly by the blinding light that made us quickly put our eclipse glasses back on. The whole thing felt like belonging to our universe. I read that in some number of billion years the moon will have moved just slightly enough that total eclipses won’t happen. How lucky we are to be here at this time, with a chance to make a difference toward making our remarkable, beautiful spot in the universe a better place. #solareclipse #solareeclipse2024 #ecoemotions #savetheplanet #makeadifference #talkaboutclimatechange #nature #ecopsychology #ecotherapy #climatepsychology

I was reminded of the power of local community action today. I started off the crisp, sunny day with a walk near the Huron River, the waterway that’s the beautiful and vital centerpiece of this part of Southeast Michigan. The Huron River watershed encompasses more than 900 square miles and drains into Lake Erie (source: @huronriver—also check them out to learn more about the Huron watershed and how to support it and keep it healthy). On my way home from my hike I went over a historic iron bridge that a little over 15 years ago was deteriorated and slated to be replaced with a concrete bridge. But nearby residents banded together and successfully convinced the road commission to restore the original bridge instead. Not only did this leave the lasting beauty of the bridge that was built in 1883, it saved resources and, even though this wasn’t their goal at the time, it also saved the use of concrete, which is a contributor to carbon emissions. Most of all, it exemplifies the ways in which people can come together to make a difference in their communities. Every one of us has the power to make a difference. What things in your community would you like to see changed that could help the natural world and climate change? What steps could you take to be part of making that happen? #huronriver #huronriverwatertrail #b2btrail #puremichigan #getoutside #michiganspring #eastdelhibridge #nature #climatechange #talkaboutclimatechange #ecoanxiety #climatedistress #climateemotions #climateaction #communityaction

Amazing, positive climate news today! I haven’t been on here much lately—in part that’s because in my free time my household was taking lots of time thoroughly researching and trying out PHEVs and EVs, and then going through the process of purchasing a new Kia EV! It’s truly an incredible feeling to not be contributing to greenhouse gas emissions while driving, and to be part of contributing to a greener present and future. Yes, mud season is here! But there are lots of days where trails are in great shape for outdoor hiking sessions! For the past couple of years I’ve offered therapy outdoors for clients in the Ann Arbor area wanting therapy-while-hiking, dealing with phobias or discomfort related to nature or the outdoors, or (re)connecting with themselves as part of the natural world. I’m certified in American Red Cross CPR and First Aid and I practice Leave No Trace as an ethos of caring for, and being part of, our natural world. Research is clear that getting outdoors is healthy for us in all kinds of ways! Yesterday it was 70 degrees here; today it’s 30. In the face of these wildly swinging temperature and weather changes, it’s understandable if you might feel that all we can do is go along for the ride. But while it might be all we can do for this exact second, but it’s not actually all we can do (especially for those of us with privilege). We can feel empowered by our love for others and our world, even in the face of something that feels disempowering. 💚 Climate change is what causes these extreme changes and vacillations in weather. What if we all took this moment to reflect on what we can do about that, and then act on it? Whether it’s participating in groups like Postcards for Voters or Environmental Voter Project @environmentalvoter to get environmental voters to the polls, buying an EV or plug-in hybrid if you can afford it (the Chevy Bolt EV is $25K right now with the tax credit), making a commitment to significantly decrease single-use plastics (plastics are made from petrochemicals, ie crude oil), sending in a donation to the Climate Reality Project @climatereality or a similar org, joining a local chapter of a climate org (eg, Citizens’ Climate Lobby @citizensclimate), etc, we can all look this wind and weather in the eye and do something right this minute. Let’s do it together—there’s strength in community. And in love. 🙌💚🌎🌍🌏 Shutterstock images used with permission. #climatechange #extremeweather #talkaboutclimatechange #mentalhealthandclimatechange #ecoanxiety #climateanxiety #ecogrief #takeactiononclimatechange #climatemotivation #loveourplanet #saveearth #climateoptimism #wecanmakeadifference

Plastics are the fossil fuel industry’s next line of attack since they’re threatened by green energy on the rise. Starting in the ‘50s, internal oil industry memos showed that the industry knew they’d cause climate change and then they engaged in subsequent decades of intentional disinformation campaigns to the public. They marketed the idea of an individual carbon footprint in order to place responsibility on us instead of them. Now they are using the same tactics and spreading propaganda about plastics, which are made from petrochemicals—and they’re doing it in our nation’s schools to get the next generation hooked on plastics. An eco-action you can take: Find out whether this is happening at schools near you or in the schools of those you love, and join or form efforts to stop it. Yale @climate.change.communication released its latest climate opinion maps yesterday, which are current through Oct 2023. All graphics shown here are theirs. That orange everywhere (69% US average) in the slide about people believing corporations should do more to address global warming is heartening; it feels hopeful to me that so many people believe corporations are culpable and should be accountable. In Michigan, where I live, the percentage of people worried about global warming has increased from 50% to 62% since 2010. Of particular interest in this election year are the data showing that a majority of Americans think “developing clean energy should be a priority for the president and Congress” and “global warming should be a priority for the next president and Congress.” Take a look yourself, and break it down by state, on YPCCC’s website: https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/visualizations-data/ycom-us/ The original published papers: Marlon, J.R., Wang, X., Bergquist, P., Howe, P., Leiserowitz, A., Maibach, E., Mildenberger, M., Rosenthal, S. If you’re looking to talk with a climate therapist about climate change or environmental concerns, my personal history—10 years ago this year—of building a grassroots organization that fought the oil industry nonstop for two years means I’m not new to caring about environmental issues and climate change. The items in the first photo are 31, 26, and 17 years old. They are (1) a purse that I love for its beautiful, ornate design, found in 1993 at a thrift store in Georgetown (D.C.) that a friend and I would sometimes walk to from our office in Dupont Circle during lunch; (2) a small backpack gifted to me by a loved one in 1998; and (3) an Eileen Fisher sweater, one of my warmest, thrifted around 2007, when I moved to Michigan. It makes me feel good to use items that I’ve had for so long. I have clothes that were bought new as well, though I’m not a shopper and rarely buy clothes; most of mine have stood the rest of time. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have room for improvement! The idea of individual responsibility for climate change—the myth that we, and not the fossil fuel industry, are supposed to fix it—is the result of a decades-long marketing campaign by…the fossil fuel industry. It’s impossible to fix that by ourselves, without economic, corporate, governmental, and societal changes. But that doesn’t mean individual action isn’t important. Far from it. After all, we make up society. The other photos are from Optoro and a NYT article. Online shopping has dramatically increased returns since no one is ever really sure whether something’s going to fit when we order it. What you don’t see a photo of here (since I don’t have them anymore 😉) is the returns I’ve made in my life. Returns I wish I hadn’t made, or needed to make, or had ever ordered in the first place. It’s challenging—with more online shopping, we have fewer brick-and-mortar stores, so we’re more likely to go online to try to find the size or style we want or need, which becomes a self-perpetuating loop. But we can make a difference by not opting in to the consumerist idea that we have to buy things. We can buy only what we need. Buy items that endure, treat them well and repair them so they last. Thrift. Buy locally, so we can try things on. Buy clothes not made from petrochemicals. Lots of people making sustainable choices matters. What kind of society and world do we want? Let’s create it! #talkaboutclimatechange #regenerativeearth #nofastfashion #motivation #imagineabetterworld

The COP28 president, Sultan Al-Jaber, is the head of the UAE’s state-owned oil company, and the UAE, where COP28 is being held, is the 7th-largest oil-producing company in the world. In the days leading up to COP28, communications were discovered showing that Al-Jaber has been lobbying for oil and gas deals with foreign governments using his COP28 presidency as access and leverage. In brief—don’t believe this corrupt leader. 💰💵 But also—don’t turn away from paying attention to COP28, which is what the fossil fuel industry would like you to do. COP is where world leaders come together to (occasionally) make commitments to decreasing fossil fuels. Keeping those commitments hasn’t worked out particularly well so far and there have been problems with COP in the past. However, having a COP is very important and this level of corruption, while completely anticipated, must be seen and called out. When climate tipping points are passed, there are things we will never get back. We’ve passed some already and we are poised to pass more if we do not keep warming to 1.5C by 2030, which was the goal of the Paris Agreement, signed at COP21. The countries of the world are not on target to do that. But there are also positive, social tipping points that accelerate the path to net-zero. We have everything in place to make this work; we just need the action. So we need huge, systemic change *and* lots of people doing something—especially when that doing something is pushing for systemic change. Call the White House and your legislators regularly (set a reminder for once a week) to tell them you want renewable energy now. Work to get your community or state to commit to the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (www.fossilfueltreaty.org). Buy an EV if you can (yes, scientists say it’s better to ditch your gas-powered car even if it’s not dead yet). Eat less red meat and encourage others to. Work to pressure celebrities flying private planes everywhere. If you have power or privilege, use it to help those who don’t. Look for the helpers. And be one. Let’s do this! #cop28 #talkaboutclimatechange #nomorefossilfuels

COP28, in all its controversy, is going on now in the United Arab Emirates. If you want to watch any of it from afar, live or recorded, you can download the UN Climate Change app, which is used for each COP. You can read about COP28 at www.cop28.com and about the U.S. schedule at https://www.state.gov/u-s-center-at-cop28-schedule/. The head of this year’s COP, Sultan al-Jaber, is the head of the UAE’s state-owned oil company—one of the largest oil companies in the world—and is also head of its state renewable energy company. This week documents were found indicating that the UAE was planning to promote fossil fuel deals during COP28. The New York Times notes: “The Emirates, the world’s seventh-largest oil producer, will produce oil ‘as long as the market demands it,’ Mr. al-Jaber told The Times. The energy firm that he leads, ADNOC, is investing tens of billions of dollars to expand oil-production capacity.” Cynicism, frustration, and anger are understandably high, given all this. And the world is not on target to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, which was adopted at COP21. We should be angry. One thing we know about climate emotions is that anger is motivating. It can lead us to act. Whether you watch some of COP28 or read about it, or whether you are tuning out in disgust, know that your anger makes sense and you can channel it in prosocial, caring ways that matter. Donating, protesting, actively encouraging and helping others to go green, contacting your government, working to get your community to be part of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and more—there’s a lot we can do, right now. #cop28 #unclimatechange #conferenceofparties28 #talkaboutclimatechange #climatechange #climatechangeisamentalhealthissue #climatechangeandmentalhealth #climateemotions #climateanger #angryaboutclimatechange #fossilfueltreaty #gogreen #fightfortheplanet #nomorefossilfuels #fossilfuelfreefuture

Support local farms! Doing so builds community, and the more money your local farms are making, the less likely they are to succumb to development. And ➡️ post-Halloween, don’t throw your pumpkins away to rot in a landfill and produce methane—be good to the climate by composting them, cutting them up for neighborhood wildlife, or looking to donate them to local places like community gardens or farms. 🎃🌾 #supportlocalfarms #buylocal #talkaboutclimatechange #thingsyoucandotohelpclimatechange

Ah, hello, fall! Photos from my weekend hikes in Ann Arbor, where some leaves are just starting to turn. Humans are part of nature, though we’re increasingly disconnected from it. Reconnecting with it holds the promise of kinship with and care for the Earth. That’s something our world needs a lot more of. And research shows that time spent in nature is—in general—good for our mental health, although it’s not always as straightforward as it sounds due to people’s life experiences in the outdoors. 🗣️ Action #168: Talk about climate: your voice matters! 🌍 Climate change isn't a distant problem; it's here, affecting us all. But the good news is, we all have the power to make a difference, starting with a simple act: talking about it! 💬 In fact, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe says talking about it is the most important thing we can do to fight climate change. (Check out her book, “Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World”, or her TED Talk, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it.”) When you discuss climate change, you're not just raising awareness; you're igniting conversations that can lead to positive change. Here's how you can make your voice count: 💞 Connect: Begin by asking questions like, "How do you feel about the climate crisis?" Share your concerns and experiences. Personal stories resonate more deeply and are more likely to help form meaningful connections and make an impact. 🌟 Find shared values: Facts alone aren’t going to change minds and hearts. If we want to inspire collective action we need to find our shared values that serve as the basis for action. 💚 Mental health matters: Talking about climate can also be therapeutic. Sharing your concerns and anxieties with others can help you feel less alone and more ready to do something about it. Remember, change starts with conversations. Your voice has the power to inspire action, whether it's among friends, family, or colleagues. Together, we can drive a cultural shift towards a more sustainable future. 🌎💬 #earthhero #climatetalk #climatechangeconversation #voiceforchange #climateaction #talkaboutclimatechange #talkclimate

Every single day is a new opportunity to turn towards. Towards taking action to save our planet, towards our fellow human beings and ourselves, towards the more-than-human world. To not go about our daily lives, to not be neutral, but to play an important role in making a difference, to stake our claim in moving us toward a better future. Sometimes, given the scope of the problem, we can feel small and insignificant. But many people taking action adds up. It matters. YOU MATTER. And it starts with looking out at the world and looking ourselves in the eye. Current and future generations are counting on us. It’s our moment in history, our time to face the challenge, to build on the momentum and change that’s already there, and to make a better world. Today. Every day. We face this together. #talkaboutclimatechange #endfossilfuels #climatehope #climateemotions

Many thanks to Amy Harder of Cipher for interviewing me on the concept of psychological distance (the idea that something doesn’t quite seem real until it happens to you), which is a significant issue when it comes to climate change. And, as described by @climate.change.communication in the article, it’s also one of the things, when breached, that leads people to change their minds about climate change. Read the article in my link-in-bio or here!: https://ciphernews.com/articles/with-climate-change-feeling-is-more-powerful-than-knowing/ Cipher is an online climate news publication about climate tech solutions, founded by Bill Gates a couple of years ago and dedicated to the goal of “helping accelerate understanding of the technologies we need to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.” #talkaboutclimatechange #psychologyandclimate #climatepsychologist #climatepsychology

Trauma. Grief and loss. Fear. Increases in suicide rates as temps increase. Increases in violence and aggression due to increased temperatures and scarcity of resources. The mental health effects of climate change are vast and extremely serious. One of my goals in working with climate is not only helping people with adapting to climate change, though that’s deeply important. It’s also helping people, on a large and small scale, mitigate climate change. It is urgent that we act, and it is not too late to prevent the worst-case scenarios. It can be difficult to hold on to hope sometimes, or to know what to do. But every step counts, and every person makes a difference. Some measurable actions you can take starting *today.” (Some of these are just for those of us in the Global North and in a position of privilege, as our footprint is much bigger): ~Decrease your meat intake. When/if you do eat beef, make it from local farms (and keep an eye out for regenerative agricultural practices, which help trap carbon). ~Vote strategically to keep anti-climate politicians out of office. ~Because it’s never too early, figure out how you’ll amplify your own vote, by getting others to the polls or being a poll worker. Join up with an organization like @environmentalvoter to encourage pro-environment voters year-round. ~Call your bank and make sure none of your savings are invested in fossil fuel companies. ~Contact your legislators to tell them you want them to support pro-climate legislation. Together, we can do this. #talkaboutclimatechange #climatechangeandmentalhealth #climatechangeandhope #climatechangemotivation #climatepsychology #climateanxiety

It was a pleasure to talk with @grottonetwork about climate therapy and climate emotions, and I’m excited to be included in their wonderful digital edition on care for creation. Faith-based organizations worldwide place great importance on being caring stewards of our planet, and addressing climate change is a fundamental part of that. Grotto Network is a Catholic organization that’s focused on young adults navigating the ups and downs of their lives. I recommend heading over to their Instagram to take a look at the other great nature-related articles that have been featured over the course of this month! You can also read my interview on climate feelings, compassion, and justice there, or by clicking the link in my bio! Repost from @grottonetwork • Have you heard of climate therapy? It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like — a form of therapy that is focused on helping people address their feelings and experiences with climate change. This resource is fairly new to the field, but the need for it is steadily growing. To learn more about it, our senior content editor Jessie spoke with Laura Carter Robinson, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist (@humanityandplanet) who not only sees clients to discuss their climate concerns, but also educates on climate therapy and serves on the executive committee of @climatepsychologyalliancena. "It's both helping people with their feelings about what's happening with climate change, as well as trying to get people in a situation where, hopefully, they can also act and do something about it," Robinson shares. In this way, addressing the climate crisis involves both taking care of our individual needs and “actively turning towards other people who are suffering.” For Robinson, that is what’s at the heart of her work. “It's deeper than labels and diagnoses,” Robinson shares. “It's really about helping our culture care for the earth and for each other.” #climateanxiety #climateawaretherapy #talkaboutclimatechange #climatetherapy #careforcreation #climatepsychology #environmentaljustice #climateemotions #ecotherapy #ecogrief #climatejustice #climatecompassion #faithbasedclimatechange

Severe weather is increasing in Michigan due to climate change, and last night was an example of that for those of us in the southern part of the state. Fear, worry, anger—all of the feelings are real and valid, and they matter. Powerful storms, and climate change, can make us feel powerless. And yet. We are not powerless. There are many things we can do to be part of creating systemic change to make a difference in climate change. One important way to do that is through making your voice heard when it comes to legislation related to climate change. Why does that matter? Because your legislators want to hear from you and your voice is amplified when it joins with those of all of the others who are also reaching out. Yesterday, before the storms, advocates and legislators discussed the “MI Power for All” plan. Check out @sen_jeff_irwin to learn more, and contact your legislators about it today—while the storms are fresh in your mind. Because action matters, and hope is made of action. If you’re not in Michigan, find out what’s happening where you are, and connect with your legislators, too. #talkaboutclimatechange #michiganclimatechange #climatepsychology #climateanxiety

The tragic fires and loss of life in Maui are another painful reminder for many of what it’s like to co-exist with climate change threats. Our feelings about horrific events like this are important, but sometimes we’re stopped at our feelings, as it’s common to feel powerless and to not know what to do in the face of climate change. Yet meaningful action is something that makes us feel better and moves us toward a social tipping point (ie, the more people who do something, the more we shift toward a big societal change). Periodically I’m going to share some knowledge about Things We Can Do About Climate Change—actions and ideas that are out there that can make a difference. Today’s Thing is the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty https://fossilfueltreaty.org/ (see link in my bio). Step by step, you can work on getting your city, your organizations, and/or your state or even your country to endorse it. There are templates and guides for how to do so on the FFNPT webpage under Take Action/Call On Your City to Endorse. Once cities have endorsed, they can become a SAFE City and commit to getting rid of fossil fuels; details are under Take Action/Campaign Materials/Cities Policy Toolkit. FFNPT is on Instagram @fossilfueltreaty. Here’s an article from 2021 from the Council on Foreign Relations on the FFNPT: https://www.worldpoliticsreview.com/articles/30166/for-mitigation-climate-change-action-should-focus-on-supply And one from The Guardian in 2022: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/11/what-is-the-fossil-fuel-non-proliferation-treaty #talkaboutclimatechange #climateanxiety #climatepsychology #fossilfuelnonproliferationtreaty

#glaciers #talkaboutclimatechange #climateemotions It’s sure been a while since I’ve posted. Soon after my last post, at the end of June, my family and I went to spend some time in the national parks of Western Canada—Banff, Kootenay, Yoho, and Jasper. It was a place of astonishing beauty and it was hard to come back from that immersion in nature. I always find that particular transition challenging, returning from a natural place that has moved me and from the rhythms of the trail (which are there even when day hiking, as we were). A hard thing for me about the Canadian Rockies is the glaciers. We all have those particular moments when climate grief rockets through us with unforgettable, devastating force, changing us forever. Last year’s UNESCO report on glaciers was one of those moments for me. The tipping point has already passed for many glaciers, meaning they cannot recover and will disappear, with drastic consequences. Those we saw on our trip are receding, as they are all over the world. 60-80% of the ice volume in Alberta and British Columbia will be gone by 2100, according to the CBC. Research out of the University of Alberta shows that the stunning glacier-fed lakes, colored blue due to the rock flour collected in glaciers, are changing color. And the language from UNESCO (2022) says it all: “Half of humanity depends directly or indirectly on glaciers as their water source for domestic use, agriculture, and power. Glaciers are also pillars of biodiversity, feeding many ecosystems.” … (keep reading in comments)…

Since the 1970s, the fossil fuel industry has known they’d cause climate change, and they deliberately lied to the public about it. (Check out reporting a few years back in the LA Times, as well as additional data from the House Oversight Committee.) They created the idea that we’re individually responsible. But they are responsible. Say it louder for the people in the back: The fossil fuel industry is responsible for our burning planet. And they’re making a fortune doing it. While today’s skies and hazardous air pollution in the northeast US focus attention on this, Western Canada has been on fire for many weeks—specifically the provinces of Alberta (home of tar sands oil) and BC. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated there long before fires in Eastern Canada caused today’s massive pollution. For weeks we’ve had haze in Michigan from those fires. And those fires affected nine First Nations in Canada as of a month ago. Let us not forget that as skies here in the US fill with smoke that we are not unique. Let us use these skies to understand that others are hurting, and have been hurting for a long time, due to skies like this around the world, even right across the US border. Let’s use this horror to join together as human beings. The best way to get out from under the thumb of the fossil fuel industry is to come together collectively that way. All of us deserve better than breathing in air that can kill. Let’s take back our planet together. #talkaboutclimatechange #educatingaboutclimatechange #nomorefossilfuels #climatepsychology
