Students were captivated by an exciting adventure to enhance their English conversation and listening skills. Early yesterday morning Andy and I loaded up 40 cats and headed north. The cats are from 5 area shelters/rescues and all have a story to bring with them. In this transport we have a cat that has recovered from a broken pelvis, one that survived a dog attack (Maggie 🙌🏻), one that was found half dead on the beach, a mom and her kittens that lived in a house with 46 others, several that were abandoned by their previous owners, mommas who have finally had their last litter of kittens, juveniles and kittens that grew up on our harsh streets, ones tagged from our local animal controls, and the list goes on and on.. Are they perfect? Nope, not in the slightest. They come with scars from their lives they leave behind in South Texas, all truly deserving of a chance at their forever home. Andy and I are blessed to be a small part of their journey. We are also traveling with 5 bottle babies and 3 special needs kitties, so it has been an adventure for sure! This transport was funded by an individual who believes in our mission and has a passion for the homeless animals in Texas. We are so thankful for her generosity. Because of her gracious donation, none of the rescues have to pay transport fees for this trip or any other transport this year! ♥️♥️ How amazing is that! What once was my page to show the world my Josie and now Lukey, I find that my page will do more good if I share dogs that are available at shelters across the country. I will have them on my story. Many shelters are on code RED which means they are at capacity and dogs are being euthanized at an alarming rate. I’m not getting political but something in this country needs to change. Dogs are being surrendered bc people are losing jobs or simply cannot afford care. I kno many of my followers are basset folks. Some are rescues, some from breeders. All I ask, is to please help these innocent fur babies by doing the following ❤️ rescue or foster 💙donate 🧡spread awareness by sharing stories of available pups 💛take a pup out for the day from the local shelter No matter who you vote for, I can guarantee we all LOVE our animals and THAT should be the #1 reason for a call to action. It feels like forever since I posted last…. Lately I’ve been in funk and it’s okay. We all can face struggles. The psychologist sprinting giddily toward @katharinehayhoe at the end of her talk Weds evening in Ann Arbor? Um, yeah…that was me. (Sprinting only inside my head, though. I think I managed a calm walk up to the stage even though I wanted to leap up and give her a high-five.😆) Why, in particular? (Aside from the fact that she’s one of my climate heroes.) Because when it comes to climate change, emotion is where it’s at, and she had just given a masterclass in how to connect an audience with their positive climate emotions, and then their climate emotions to climate action. Inspiration and a sense of possibility were coursing through the room. As a climate psychologist who centers this in my own work, I was both moved and thrilled to watch a large audience learn experientially that we can act on climate because we feel love and care for other people and all living things. And it’s a circular process—when we act, we feel good. When I was at @climaterealityproject in NYC recently, Al Gore lightheartedly asked if there had been any embarrassing (ie, very human) moments activists might have had in their work. Sandy Field of @saveoursusquehannapa straightforwardly declared, “No….Doing this makes me feel proud of myself.” It was a breathtaking and beautiful reply in its deep truth about our emotions and its acknowledgement of how meaningful climate action is, not just to the rest of the world, but to our own selves. Our emotions are central to our human experience and at the core of who we are. When we open to the possibility of our care and love being underneath our fears, we can find ground to stand on to fight *for* something instead of simply *against.* It’s a powerful shift that can move us forward. Thank you, @katharinehayhoe, for bringing your wisdom and inspiration to Michigan. April 22nd is being designated World Earth Day. This designation is to remind all of us not to take for granted the resources we have available to us today but to figure out how best to protect our children and theirs from an earth depleted. It is not meant to just be one day during which we do something that can make a positive impact. The environment may be a sobering and potentially terrifying thought for many. When faced with seemingly insurmountable problems, it can feel as if our efforts won't make a dent. But keep going. Do what you can do in your current situation. Or perhaps acquire skills that can make a dent in one facet of the problem. Or affect policy makers if you're in the position to do so. Become a policy maker. It may seem that martial arts training does not have a direct connection to taking care of the environment. I'm very lucky that I have a feed full of people who care about our wonderful planet and post all the time about how special Earth is. So it's no surprise that on Earth Day there is a wonderful chorus of "everyday is Earth Day for us but today let's really emphasise how awesome it is!" Or something like that 😉 So I wanted to add my voice in the way I love best, via a book! 📖 I perused our shelves and found one perfect for this year's theme, Planet Vs plastics. 🌍 "A Planet Full of Plastic" by Neal Layton 📚 In Layton's picture book, we journey through a world drowning in plastic. Through vivid illustrations and simple language, he shines a light on the environmental crisis we face. It's a wonderful book to educate and empower young readers (and their grown ups too!).
