One of the migrating warblers passing through, a Palm Warbler. There are times when you can use your own vulnerability to protect others; Killdeer will regularly make a big fuss, to the extent of faking injuries, to draw potential predators away from the nest. As quick as they are, this isn't as much of a gamble or sacrifice - just cunning, conviction and an understanding of their hunters. #killdeer #blackbirdersweek #birdsinflight #washtenawcountyparks #cameramall #sundayreflection #blackmeninoutdoorphotography #puremichigan #natgeoyourshot

The first #sandhillcrane colts are hatching, carefully sheparded around by their watchful parents. There are a lot of ways we mark time - learning the changes to these rhythms year to year is a good reminder of where I was in the last few cycles, and that some things will happen on their own time 🙏🏾 #washtenawcountyparks #blackbirdersweek #blackmeninoutdoorphotography #shadesoftheoutdoors

We used to call them 'helicopters' when I was small; I remember sitting after school in the golden light of fall, peeling away the papery skin to marvel at the seed within - what a notion, that the giants stretching above us started so small and common, beneath notice. They're still a wonder to behold, both in form and function, but I understand them differently now. I was greeted recently on a hike by those same familiar papery husks, but the moment was new and delicate. Millennia of evolution, all leading to this moment - the heaviness of the seeds, carried by their paper wings, settling perfectly into rich soil protected by damp moss. #naturephotography #canon #mapleseed #washtenawcountyparks #spring #moss #puremichigan

A little whimsy never hurt, though the sound my knees made getting up from flat on my belly in the grass suggests otherwise. Daffodils are an almost universal sign of spring, but they're not native to our woods and meadows in Southeast Michigan. While they're not invasive, there's a lot to be gained from aligning our sense of beauty and the passage of time with the plants and animals that have lived here for millennia. #naturephotography #whimsy #spring #daffodils #forcedperspective #nativeplants #puremichigan #washtenawcountyparks #canon #adventure #seethingsdifferently

While hawks and eagles draw a lot of attention, the less glamorous critters have important roles to play too. This is a turkey vulture I caught in a lucky snap - my camera was already set up to catch the tree branches against the sky when it started circling overhead. The eclipse earlier this week was stunning, and drew attention to the natural world in dramatic fashion. There are wondrous things happening every minute of every day, but often going unnoticed. You don't have to wait another 20+ years to be moved by nature, you've just got to get out there and observe the world. #naturephotography #washtenawcountyparks #turkeyvulture #puremichigan #wildlife #canon #birds #adventure #hiking

There are some female birds that are the more colorful in some species, and one of my favorites to watch is the Belted Kingfisher - the orange coloring increases as she ages, and I think my friend here has seen a few summers. Still recovering from work travel and a lot of service commitments, but I've had some excellent encounters this week. Yes, mud season is here! But there are lots of days where trails are in great shape for outdoor hiking sessions! For the past couple of years I’ve offered therapy outdoors for clients in the Ann Arbor area wanting therapy-while-hiking, dealing with phobias or discomfort related to nature or the outdoors, or (re)connecting with themselves as part of the natural world. I’m certified in American Red Cross CPR and First Aid and I practice Leave No Trace as an ethos of caring for, and being part of, our natural world. Research is clear that getting outdoors is healthy for us in all kinds of ways! If you’re curious or interested, check out my link-in-bio to contact me. #hikingtherapy #outdoortherapy #ecotherapy #nature #getoutside #natureandmentalhealth #ecodistress #ecoanxiety #ecogrief #talkaboutclimatechange #climatechange #weareonewithnature #puremichigan #michiganhiking #psychotherapyoutdoors #walkandtalktherapy #ecopsychology #springinmichigan #annarborhiking #annarboroutdoors #hikeannarbor #annarbor #washtenawcountyparks #washtenawcountynaturepreserves

This weekend, I was approached by someone who attended one of my bird walks and expressed gratitude for how what I said about birding replenishing me for social justice work had helped her get through this past year. "Whenever I'm overwhelmed by the malice and chaos of the world, I come out here, sit with the birds, and remind myself that this is the world, too." It's really edifying to discover your words have taken root in someone, even from a single day of interaction. Grateful for the encouragement to own the glimmers of wisdom I've been able to develop, and working more on sharing them as widely as I'm able. #sandhillcrane #blackbirdersweek #blackinnature #blackmeninoutdoorphotography #cameramall #washtenawcountyparks

For native Detroiters of a certain vintage, 6am brings unbidden thoughts of Mason in the Morning spinning Sammy Davis Jr's Hello Detroit as our unofficial alarm clock. It wasn't until years later that I recognized how that song served as a small counterbalance to the way we were talked about by outside media. Red Winged Blackbirds always remind me of home, for so many reasons, and I imagine this little guy crooning in the cold, getting ready for the long walk to school. (Fun fact about Sammy - he was an avid and talented photographer. "Sammy's camera often served as a shield" to gain access to places he couldn't because of his color. "Nobody interrupts a man taking a picture to ask 'what's that n----- doing here?'" Sounds familiar to me, right @blackmeninoutdoorphotography ? 📷😉 #redwingedblackbird #detroit #sammydavisjr #washtenawcountyparks #natgeoyourshot #nuts_about_birds #blackbirdersweek #michiganaudubon

a ballad of benediction; 12/31/23 OM-1 + 300mm f/4 pro may feathers slow my fall again, while I reflect on all I see beyond the fog and storms within that life holds more than frailty --- Survive and advance. It's been a long, long year; a year of loss, of bountiful creativity, of claiming that which I already earned and fighting for peace, in so many ways. I hope this time next year, I have a clearer view of what I wish to see in the year to come; for now, I will have to be satisfied with knowing that I will keep trying to become more myself, however I choose to shape me. #sundayreflection #sandhillcrane #blackbirdersweek #puremichigan #cameramall #omsystem #birdsinflight #washtenawcountyparks

"Box Elder Bugs" These are highly localized populations of bugs that appear in late summer. In the wild, they can occupy an entire tree, and in cities they can invade homes but are relatively harmless. There are usually adults and nymphs.
