I am neither a fan of Cantopop or Chinese songs but I understand that the name is the same as the song by Wang Leehom. With the Tanglin Halt area near Commonwealth MRT being selected for en-bloc and redevelopment, it is inevitable that Tanglin Halt Food Centre faced the same fate too. Thus it closed on 31 July 2022 after its tenants moved to Margaret Drive Hawker Centre. With it comes perhaps an end to the history and legacy of Tanglin Halt. Happy Sunday, everyone! 🌿 This packet of beehoon may look super unassuming but it is a pack of childhood for me! I used to eat this every other Saturday morning when my parents went marketing, and when my friends and I would go for breakfast before our church service. It was so good that we would say, "Tanglin Halt beehoon?" and no one would ever say no 😂 You'll definitely know which store it is just by its long snaking line from the store to the main road; it is just that popular!! 🥲 It's a good ol' economic beehoon/kway tiao/noodles kind of store with different side dishes like luncheon meat, veg, chicken wings, sausages, eggs etc. They even have peanut porridge for just 80c/$1! As Tanglin Halt undergo SERS (enbloc), this market will be gone in the next 2-3 years and we would have to bid goodbye to many yummy food stores (like Wei Yi Laksa & Prawn Noodles, Duck Noodles and Wanton Mee!!) that my mum and I grew up with 😢 Here's to hoping they would move over to the new Margaret Drive Hawker Centre 🤞🏻 📍 Mei Jia Fried Bee Hoon in Tanglin Halt Market & Food Centre
🗓 - 2nd July 2022 🥢 - No. 1 Western Food 🌟 - 🌟🌟🌟🌟 💸 - $9.50 1️⃣ Chicken Cutlet $6.50 + Pork Chop $3 Another old school western food at Tanglin Halt Food Center, No. 1 Western food has more than 50 years of history in serving western food. Currently run by the second generation owners, No. 1 Western Food is famous for its special sauce that is doused over its cutlets and chops. As it was my first visit to the stall, decided to order their chicken chop with the addition of a piece of pork chop to have a better comparison to what I ordered from their counterpart (Chef Hainanese Western Food located in the same food center), although No. 1 Western Food is more well-known for their chicken cutlet. The chicken chop and pork chop were nicely grilled with some charring and had a smoky flavor. The chops were well-seasoned, tender and succulent. The special sauce which is kept simmering in a large rice cooker seems to be tomato based and offers a sweet and tangy contrast to the savoury meats. Overall, I do prefer No. 1 Western Food to Chef Hainanese Western Food as I find the chops to be better grilled and has a more smoky flavor to it, also I find that their unique sauce is a better complement than the usual black pepper or brown sauce. 🗓 - 26th June 2022 🥢 - Chef Hainanese Western Food 🌟 - 🌟🌟🌟 💸 - $10.50 1️⃣ Chef Set 3 $10.50 Located in the soon to be demolished Tanglin Halt Food Center, Chef Hainanese Western Food serves up old school western food. Opening for only 2 hours in the evenings, do expect a waiting time of about 30-45 minutes as a line is formed even before the stall starts taking orders. Besides the regular coffee shop western food sets, beneath its signboard, there are also 4 Chef Sets that can be ordered which is effectively a combination of different items on the menu. The Chef Set 3 comes with a portion of chicken chop, pork chop, a sausage and the usual sides of baked beans, coleslaw fries, baked potato. The chicken chop was succulent and tender with the skin of the chicken grilled to a crisp. Though the chicken chop was good, the pork chop was better. Instead of a thin slice of pork chop that many other stalls offer which tends to be very dry, what you get at Chef Hainanese is a relatively thick cut of pork that is juicy and tender. Two different sauces are doused over your chops, a black pepper sauce and a brown sauce. The black pepper sauce tasted relatively bland but the brown sauce did have a citrusy note to it which was rather unique. A very hearty meal for $10.50, definitely worth the wait and price. P.S. Tanglin Halt Food Centre. This is opposite the hawker centre i sketched 3 weeks ago and will be gone soon..i really love the trees surrounding it - a resident told me some are close to 100yrs old! The open space in front of the food centre is closed to public now as it is in need of maintenance, but this was where they used to host live performances back in the day. Had quite a few lively chats today with the residents walking past on their way home. will probably be back again for more sketches.. such a quiant neighbourhood, sad to see it go..
