Just another day at the office. Yes, one of Rob’s offices is behind that door, our basement, our winery, our little experiment! Rob is heading down to disgorge pét-nats on a 15 degree February Valentine day. #latergram sorry Those not familiar with disgorging may be confused about Rob’s choice of clothing. Disgorging is the process by which the fermentation byproducts in the bottles of our sparkling wines are released. The wines are topped off, and then re-capped. It’s a labor intense and messy business, and you should not be robed in anything you plan to wear in public. We bottle all of our pétillant natural wines before the fermentation is finished, so it completes in the bottle. During the winter we riddle the lees, (fermentation byproducts- think dead yeast, solids), so they sit in the neck of an inverted bottle. We chill the bottles and freeze the bottle necks before disgorging them so we don’t lose too much wine. Videos to come! Love this guy. Lambing could happen any day now at EEV, and we are starting to get excited and a little anxious about this important and special time of year. 🐑🐑🐑 We are getting the lamb cams set up, the lambing jugs built, and making sure we have all the appropriate veterinary supplies available for potential complications. We are almost ready ladies! Our decision to lamb and not purchase our sheep for grazing the vineyard every year does not simplify our lives. It does not improve efficiencies, nor save us time or money, but it brings us a real appreciation of life and the full circle nature of what we do. Choosing to lamb in January and February in northern Vermont is not for everyone. It’s incredibly challenging, but it brings us great joy. And now that we have chosen to lamb every winter, we are starting to feel a sense of post-harvest winter rhythm. First harvest—then wine fairs—followed by a slight lull that gives us a moment to reflect and check in with the wines and our community—unavoidable Holiday crazy—brief pause while we marvel in Winter—then lambing—then pruning—then back at the vineyard. 🧑🌾 🍇👩🌾 Any predictions on who will go first?! Happy first week of the New Year! We at EEV wish everyone health, love and prosperity in 2024 ♥️🥂🐑! I’m sorry it’s been a while. I took a second to focus on life outside the gram, but we are back! And man do we have some exciting new EEV goodness in the works for you all that I cannot wait to share. 🤗🥂💕 Since it’s been a while, and for new followers, I’ll throw out a little introduction. I’m Kendra, and pictured with me is my social medialess husband and business partner, aka, The Professor or Rob. The first photo and those ensuing are from us at our first @rawwineworld fair in NYC this Fall! 😮🥂🗽 We took a leap of faith and bought an abandoned 50 acre farm and 10.5 acre vineyard in the Lake Champlain Islands in Vermont in 2018. I transitioned out of my job as a veterinary oncologist to find better balance in my life and to try to build something I was truly proud of. Three little munchkins may have been part of the inspiration. Since then, we have embarked on a journey to learn how to be land stewards, winemakers, and business people. Somehow in there, we also became sheep farmers, as we began to embrace a regenerative farming philosophy that is intrinsic in all we do. As the beginning of a new year generally brings reflection, I just want to say how grateful Rob and I are to everyone who has helped us along this journey from our wine growing community in Vermont & Quebec to wine writers to restaurants and wine shops to good friends and family. It has taken a massive and supportive community for us to build EEV, (definitely can’t tag them all!). And our community is so important to us! I’ve been taking a little time for myself and the family post harvest and not posting 😬. Sometimes that needs to happen. It never really slows down, but the post harvest rhythm allows for moments of reflection despite the regular chaos. One of the main reasons I embarked upon a different career path was this, our family. Despite now working at least 3 jobs, I do have flexibility. Our kids get to watch Rob and I work really hard to build something meaningful, and that brings us joy and balance. It’s not always easy, and we let go of a lot of stability in our lives, but it’s worth it. I love watching the entrepreneurial spirit in each of our children grow, their deep appreciation for the natural world, and their practical approach to life and problem solving because of their exposure to farming. Who knows if they will ever want to do what we are doing. Zora (age 10) says no way does she ever want to work as hard as us now 🤪, but I do know this journey is good for them and making them more brilliant little humans. Thank you @jesse_schloff_photography for always capturing the beauty of our vineyard and our people. This is golden hour in front of our new 4 acre planting of vines. Vendage. These purple asters are harbingers of harvest. When we spot the first bloom in late August or early September, we know it’s almost go time. I was told this week that in France, these flowers are called “vendage”, which means grape harvest. I love it when we all speak the same language. Harvest starts. We blink, and all of a sudden the vineyard is blanketed, a brilliant purple intermixed with a more rare fuschia counterpart, perfectly juxtaposed with gleaming golden rod. Daisy fleabane, blue wood asters, and my favorite, the delicate calico asters intermix amongst the violet haze. Asteraceae, you impress me. I love the warmth this time of year, crave the crisp mornings, and excitedly await the first snow, when I really come alive. Until then, we relish the hard work, good company, contemplation and the new beginnings harvest brings. We also try not to hold on to the stress and ignore the sleep deprivation. ;) Harvest day 11. 4.3 tons in.
