2022 Top 10 Records | #9 The Bruce Lee Band - One Step Forward. Two Steps Back. (Asian Man Records) “I stood up, screamed loud; feel like they ignore me/ They refuse to make a meaningful change/ I’m not a hateful person, but I want to see you pay/ For the unbridled joy you take, in those that you destroy/ And until then I’ll find it hard to celebrate” Once again, The Bruce Lee Band has made my top 10. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: every record Mr. Park and co. drop is a ska master class. 12 songs not only of wholesome musicianship but also very deep and honest. I do feel this record is a little angrier and frustration-driven than past efforts which were more mellow and chill. For sure, the global political climate and the daily geopolitical horror have taken a toll on everybody and this record I believe reflects that. Musically there’s little to say that will make justice to such well done record and such amazing band but yeah, it’s peak ska from folks like Mike Park, Jeff Rosenstock, Dan Potthast and Kevin Higuchi all with legendary underground credentials, also among other talented musicians it was great to see the almighty Jeremy Hunter (JER/Skatune Network) play some of the instrumentals giving their fantastic touch to the mix. The record travels from everything from very third-wave-y ska punk to Two-tone-ish ska and even some trad-ska all with their own pace and peculiar energy, also Mike Park vocals are always fantastic and so genuine. Lyrically, always politically clever, at times angry, shares the vision of asian american Mike Park in today’s conflicting world. It’s a great bonus to have included letters from Mike in the album insert which let us peek both as the way The Bruce Lee Band works and records and the mental state as the world’s worst conflicts unfolded. I hope to have a Bruce Lee Band record to include in my top for the next 100 years.

His band opened for @voodooglowskullsofficial in Albany, CA. I hopped on stage and danced for one song. I later found out that I’d been exposed to Covid. I took a test during the ep and revealed the test results. Ooh the drama! First up, we had on the legend @coolieranx, who just released his first-ever solo LP, Days Gone By. But we dug deep into his childhood, his history as a struggling Dancehall singer, The Toasters frontman, and his time fronting his own group @pilfersnyc. We also discussed his close connection to the 2000s UK ska-punk scene, with groups like King Prawn and @sonicboomsix. We continued the conversation about UK ska-punk with @bootiepook1, who’s been involved in various bands since the early 2000s. His direction was less ska-punk and more ska-metal. (Lamb of God, Sepultura brutal types of metal.) His MetaliSKA groups include Beat the Red Light and Redeemon. We also discussed Pook’s excellent record label, @pookoutrecords. During our third week, we attempted the impossible: To document the full history of the scariest ska-punk band in the 90s: Blue Meanies. We chatted with lead singer Billy Spunke and later-era guitarist, Sean Dolan. Between the two of them, we pieced together their full story. It’s a two-hour episode and it flies right by. We closed out the month with an epic conversation between @mikeparkmusic and @jeffrosenstock. We discussed the new @bruceleeband record and every area where their paths crossed. The Bruce Lee Band: One Step Forward. Two Steps Back. (2022). The Bruce Lee Band serves another skasplosion of songs, very much on the pulse of the world we are living in. Tackling topics such as racism, inequality and economic injustice, I feel like this album is more frustrated and a little less hopeful and who can blame the artist. Fantastic songs anyway, front to back. I think my favourite so far is "사랑 키스 입니다" which I can not sing along to. I googled the title and apparently it's something like "The Kiss of Love". My copy is the beer bottle clear/dark purple variant, limited to 100. It was bundled with a cool t-shirt that is in the laundry basket right now, all wrinkled and smelling new and nasty.

In 1995, when Mike Park released the debut Bruce Lee Band album, he found out that Bruce Lee's brother worked at the CD manufacturing plant where he was getting the album duplicated. Bruce Lee's brother warned him that if he didn't change the name, the Bruce Lee estate would come after him, so he changed the band to B. Lee Band.
