I wish I could have met the founders of The Landmark Trust, they were an extraordinary couple, to realise this extraordinary idea and dream. But it’s been lovely to get to know them through colleagues who knew them well. I’m grateful to those I have learnt so much from. Furnishings, the regional teams, and Italy have really made a mark. It’s incredible to understand how hard they work to protect so many of these special properties. And of course, how they take care of them, so many people get to experience a piece of history in a really unique way. Very much enjoyed a peak around the Bath Tower in Caernarfon for @cadwcymruwales Open Doors weekend. Owned by @landmarktrust since 1967, this tower dates from c.1280 and was part of the Caernarfon's old town walls. It's been various things over the centuries, including a 19th century public bath house, nowdays you can book to stay there (sleeps 5) & it would be a fantastic treat! The staff were all super friendly, knowledgeable & enthusiastic today 👌. Lundy Island is not only home to Atlantic Grey Seals but these beautiful highland cattle. Lundy is home to 6 highland steers, which are very handsome. During Lundy’s summer and beautiful weather, they use their large horns to cool themselves down as you can see from Boris on the left. Yesterday was the summer meeting of the Lundy Collectors club in Bideford. I wanted to show you a few of the treasures I found in a box of mixed bits I got for just £24 at the auction! As well as these I also had some small pieces of china & engraved glasses, along with vintage pencils (with the puffin toppers ❤️) a puffin thimble & even an original piece off of St Helens roof. I also had a bag of tee shirts hats & collectors club ephemera for just a tenner! What a great day for Lundy treasures - it felt a bit like Christmas unpacking it all 💙 The last picture is of my stall set-up which held a few of the bits I sell on www.tideandisle.co.uk - including some special prices for the collectors ❤️ All in all a great day, although very sorry the sailing was cancelled on Saturday so the club didn’t get its annual day trip 😣 #lundy #tideandisle #lundycollectorsclub

Some more from Lundy Island (06/23)⚓️🌊☀️ After a 2 hour ferry journey, you reach the island which is 3 miles long and characterised by a rugged Atlantic-facing west coast, where many seabirds nest, and a sheltered east coast where a variety of plant life can be found. Top tip: the best spot to see Puffins up-close is Battery Point, where they burrow in the cliffs below amongst the sea thrift (April-July)🌸 We also saw a number of Manx Shearwaters, Razorbills and Guillemots as well as Soay sheep and Sika deer 🦌 Next time I will be on the lookout for the endemic Lundy cabbage😎🫶🥬 I would recommend choosing ferry crossings which allow at least 6 hours on the island in order to explore everywhere!! Our trip was delayed by weather conditions - 4 hours certainly wasn’t enough time. A beautiful adventure with @skipp.michelle on Saturday, exploring Lundy Island in search of Puffins. We set sail from Ilfracombe and arrived in overcast conditions, but the climb up from the jetty soon had us stripping off layers. We found Puffins and enjoyed a pic nic lunch with Gin while watching them from afar. We also saw Lundy ponies, Soay sheep, Highland cows, a baby bunny, and lots of seafaring birds. Amazing progress is being made at our Calverley Old Hall project with @landmarktrust The 12 months defects period for the reroofing phase is nearing an end with the final inspection due next Monday. Phase 2 has been on site since last June & is scheduled for completion at the end of January 2024. Here are some photos of the ongoing work to repair and refurbish the property. The @spab1877 scholars & fellows joined us during the last site visit which was a good opportunity to discuss the philosophy of repairs.
New curtains in the first floor sitting room of the Egyptian House, Penzance - another historic reprint project I completed for @landmarktrust. This archive pattern, comprising a papyrus motif, has been in the property since it was restored and first opened in the 1970s. It seemed never to have been intended as an all-over pattern, instead being printed as a border down the sides and across the bottom of the previous curtains. With the need to replace these came the opportunity to revisit it's arrangement, and address the the resulting large area of blank fabric which seemed a waste. I devised a reprint scheme using vertical stripe repetition on the longest lengths to achieve more pattern coverage while letting the colourful base fabrics shine through. Here is the second stamp design that my Grandad sent to Martin Coles Harman. It features the Old Light - which was then the headquarters of the LFS (Lundy Field Society). I love the burnt orange colour that’s he’s used - and the contrast to the Puffin blue. Grandad made his first visit to the island in 1948, on the Lerina, (which incidentally was my name for the first ten days of my life - before my Mum changed it to Lucy!) I’ve often wondered if my life would have taken a completely different path if I’d been a Lerina? My sister is named after Jenny’s cove, & it is a shame that I don’t have a Lundy name anymore… Grandad stayed at the Old Light on that first visit, which was then very basic accommodation for members of the LFS. For those that don’t know, the Old Light was completed in 1820 but very quickly fell out of use as it was built too high to not be shrouded in fog in bad weather. The gun battery supplemented it when the weather was in and the light couldn’t be seen, and then North & South Lighthouses took over upon their completion in 1897. Not long after his inaugural Lundy trip, Granddad uprooted the family from near Bury in Lancashire & moved them down to the North Devon coast. The main driver for this was to be closer to the Island that had completely captured his heart. #tideandisle #stamp #lundy

Back in 1948 my Grandad, John Dyke, wrote to the then owner of Lundy, Martin Coles Harman, to show him some mock ups of the sorts of stamps he could design for the Islands’ private postal service. He had previously been in touch, and a visit to stay on the Island in 1940 was planned, but the war meant that everything had to be placed on hold. Grandad completed five years service in the army during this time, including producing some of the invasion maps for the Normandy landings. As a reintroduction to MCH Grandad wrote once more enclosing three stamp designs for him to consider, & mentions using them to raise funds for the Lundy Field Society in his covering letter. As a freelance artist he was, I suppose somewhat used to selling his talents in this way & he even apologises for the rough drafts of all three stamps (which were drawn to twice the usual size), saying that they aren’t to his usual standard. The back catalogue of Landmark curtain patterns remains largely undocumented, but for my own efforts to unravel the stories behind each historic design. The motif for Causeway is certainly derived from the House's proximity to Vindolanda Fort, with decorated roundels strongly reminiscent of Roman Wall paintings and mosaics like these illustrations I found on the house's own bookcase. But the identities of the two figures which feature on the curtains are unknown to me. The Gate Burton Hall folly, known as The Chateau (John Platt 1747), is a landmark that anyone travelling from Lincoln to Gainsborough will have seen, sitting as it does in the grounds of the Gate Burton Hall. I've often wondered what this interesting little building was like up close, and today, I've had the opportunity to get inside courtesy of the Knaith Hall Snowdrop weekend team. Restored sympathetically by The Landmark Trust, you can now rent this great place out as a little weekend getaway.
