🖤🤍 Wildlife Wednesday - Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) 🖤🤍 Snowy clouds of flowers, spiny thorns, and berries for a boozy purpose – blackthorn is a fantastic plant! This tree is native to the UK and can live for around 100 years. They do amazingly well here on Gigha, and make a fabulous hedging plant, which is exactly why we have ordered apx. 2000 to build the bulk of our hedgerow project here on island. Choosing hedging species that are favourites for our wildlife means we aren’t only connecting habitats and providing natural boundaries, but we are providing nesting, foraging and sheltering opportunities for an array of wildlife, and blackthorn certainly fits this bill with its spiny branches, beautiful flowering capacity and its density. These trees are also pretty fantastic when harvested, this tree has been used for many purposes throughout time including making traditional walking and riding sticks, Irish shillelaghs (an ancient weapon), witches wands and staffs, and of course alcoholic beverages such as gin. It's been a little while...but we are softly coming back 🩷🍋🌿 As some of you know, me and my wonderful partner Scott have been renovating our house for a year now and the last couple of months we've been all hands on deck getting a couple of rooms ready and a bathroom for us to move in full time! We have stayed with family for the last couple of years to get our dream home - third time lucky, and with everyone's help and peeling back all the layers we've finally been able to start putting things back and insulating which is so so exciting and rewarding – in a couple of weeks we'll finally be moving 🩷 So sadly O&T naturally had to step into the background during this time, so I haven't been active on here or any markets. We're planning lots so that one day it can fully blossom and I have a wonderful studio to make soap in 🌱 Since starting Oat & Thistle I have had 3 different spaces to work from and the 4th temporary one is next so I'll have to adjust once again! 💚💜🖤 Wildlife Wednesday - Lapwing 🖤💜💚 There’s no denying that this bird is one of our most recognisable, both by its looks and its sound – pee-wit! In times gone by, this sounds was associated with the “seven whistlers”, a group of mysterious, night-flying birds that were a sign of impending doom and foretellers of misfortune! However, these birds have amazing broad wings and a really clumsy looking flight, from a far you’d be forgiven for thinking they were black and white, but similarly to starlings, they actually have an iridescent green and purple plumage. These are classified in the UK as a Red List species meaning they are of higher conservation concern, but they are both wetland and farmland specialists, that have the clumsiest of mating flights, with the males looking like they’re tumbling through the air – but at least their female counterparts find this endearing! One of our smells from Halloween is back because it was just so good. The yummy TOASTED MARSHMALLOW, I’m not a fan of marshmallows to eat, but I do love the smell, anything sweet and I’m happy.
