Every year I like to volunteer and offer my Photography services to a worthy cause or something community related. Local theatre groups are truly a labour of love and bring the arts to our doorstep. So much volunteered time and energy goes into putting these productions together. And we are so lucky to have a theatre with such a high calibre of actors, directors, producers & crew here for us all to enjoy in the Macedon Ranges. Last year I approached @themountplayers Theatre in Macedon. This theatre holds a special place in my heart, as my dear old Dad (who passed 6 years ago), my brother, my Mum and many family friends have had a lot to do with this wonderful theatre group over the years. So many of them being on stage, back stage, helping front of house or attending the shows. There are an incredible amount of stories and history embedded into the walls and stage of this amateur theatre group, that has been churning out productions for the past 50 or so years. In the past month, I’ve been popping up to take photos during rehearsals for their next production⹁ “Looped" that opens this Friday night. Written by Matthew Lombardo, this is a play about an event surrounding actress Tallulah Bankhead in 1965. Set in a recording studio in Los Angeles, trying to re-record (loop) just one single line of dialogue from her film "Die! Die! My Darling!", took an astonishing 8 hours to record! 🌟 Photos by Evie G 🌟 My gorgeous 5 year old, recently came along to a @zenzen.gisborne photoshoot with me and asked if she could take some photos. So, I dug out an old camera and let her have a play… My heart burst when I watched her capture moments behind the scenes. The giggling and the joy on her face as she did it, was just priceless. Seeing her photos from her perspective (and height!) was SO refreshing & made me so proud. I’ll definitely be using some of her pics on ZENZEN’s socials (with her permission)! I also noticed how people smile and look at the camera differently when a child is taking a photo. The subject is far more relaxed. I highly recommend giving your children a camera for a few hours. Preferably a point & shoot style camera, so you don’t end up with 5000 selfies with emojis and filters pasted all over them! Let them go and don’t interfere. Backed by The Voyagers, together they filled the new Rockhill Stables with bluesy and rhythmic alt-folk that sent everyone into a Sunday afternoon of pure bliss. Lizanne and the eclectic electro-acoustic ensemble, featuring Shaun Evans (Keys / Winds), France Thiele (Harp), Keith Smith (Guitar), Peter Cocklin (Bass) captured the crowd ever so beautifully. It should also be said, how lucky we all were to witness the re-emergence of Lizanne Richards. Her music making has been on pause for the past 7 years, to put her energy into raising a gorgeous family. And now she's back and full of songs that are busting to get out of her – Look out folks! I truly loved capturing & sharing this day with some really wonderful people. I left with rosy cheeks and a very warm heart... And so very happy for Lizanne. She's a lady on a musical mission and I'm excited to see what else is going to burst out of her!

I was pretty pumped to take part in the design of @zenzen.gisborne, an awesome Japanese dine-in & takeaway restaurant that hit the streets of Gisborne at the end of last year. If you haven’t already been, I urge you to go and treat your tastebuds to some seriously flavoursome Ramen, Nagoya Chicken Wings, Gyoza, Baos, Katsu Curry and anything else that you can fit in your belly! If you’ve been to ZENZEN’s sibling restaurant @kuzu.izakaya (Woodend), you’ll know you’re in for a treat! I'm also a tad biased (but rightly so!), my gorgeous brother Gareth & business partner Eriko run both of these restaurants... I'm super proud of what they've achieved and given to us all here in the Macedon Ranges ❤️ Putting The Urban Sparrow skills to use, I set up their brand identity, social media, photography, menus, takeaway bags, food wraps, signage for interiors and exteriors, sourcing artwork for their poster wall… Pretty much anything design or photography related. I continue to work each week on creating exciting content for their socials. With regular photoshoots to make sure everything is looking as fresh as the flavours bursting out of this vibrant little restaurant! Sharing a personal favourite here… These were taken 4 years ago when my dear old Dad was still with us. On this particular day, my Mum had organised for my Dad to come up to our family home (he was in old age care at this stage). It was a big effort to get him home. But it meant so much that we could all be together in our happy place and that Dad was with us to enjoy it. It really was a special day. The old Brumby car was sitting in the carport which Dad loved driving in…. My then 1 year old son jumped in with him and was extremely excited to be at the wheel with his Grancha by his side! The squeals of excitement and “brrrrrmooming” was at high. My Dad had the biggest grin on his face and began to laugh wholeheartedly. Sadly, Parkinson’s disease reduces facial movements and makes smiling & laughing very difficult…. So this was the most natural smile we’d seen on my Dad's face in a long time…. We’ve all locked this special moment deep inside our hearts. And it’s these types of moments that I tell anyone going through a loss, to hold onto and keep at the forefront of their minds. After they’ve passed away, no one can ever take away the happy memories you have of them…. Cherish them.
Yesterday, I photographed my first wedding since Covid crashed upon us. Robyn & Brad (Mr & Mrs Parker) were booked in to have their wedding back at the beginning of April.... When they moved their wedding date to October, I’m pretty sure all of us thought that things would be back to normal by then…. I loved Robyn’s response leading up to it when I asked what they would do if there was a cap on how many people could attend. Her reply was, “We are going ahead, regardless!”. So an intimate outdoor (10 person) ceremony was planned on the beautiful foreshore of Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. She mentioned that even if it poured with rain, they would still go ahead with their outdoor ceremony and take their vowels underneath an umbrella! They had waited long enough to get married and nothing was stopping them now! It was a beautiful day. Robyn’s brother David was able to film it so that friends and family could watch it live from their homes. Next year they will celebrate their 1 year anniversary by throwing a big reception party with family & friends. Not a bad way to string out the wedding festivities!! Congratulations Mr & Mrs Parker! ❤️

Feeling all dreamy after looking back at Dave & Ai’s helicopter wedding in Queenstown, New Zealand…. This was such a small and intimate wedding where New Zealand & Japan came together and made all their guests feel like rockstars. They flew themselves & their guests around in helicopters @glaciersouthernlakesheli, tied the knot on top of the picturesque South Island mountains, took it slow and steady around Queenstown in vintage cars, a whole weekend in a stunning lodge looking over the Shotover River, ate & drank like Kings & Queens along with their lovely friends & family… Amazing.

The McMahon family & I were able to capture the last of the Autumn light on Saturday afternoon… Autumn is the perfect season to take photos, the beautiful dreamy light and the colours on the trees (and ground!) are spectacular… And to top if off, the kids cheeks are adorable and rosy from the crisp air! This was my first photo session since Covid crashed into our world. I think all of us on Saturday afternoon were just happy to be outside and having fun and being a little bit social! The kids were awesome and loved our little adventure. And how lucky are we to have these beautiful places to explore at our doorstep…. 🙏🏻

Here is our lovely neighbour, Beth & her granddaughter Jacinta (who lives with her). This photo was taken as part of the #facesoftheranges project, capturing members of our community staying at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. When I popped over to their place to take a photo, Beth mentioned to me that she’d spoken to a friend recently who said that this stay at home life & panic buying feels just like during the war. Beth laughed (she has a gorgeous laugh!) and said “it’s nothing like during the war!”. She went on to say that during the war they didn’t even know when Darwin was being bombed. There were no smartphones back then that gave you instant updates on worldwide news. She said the only way you could find out things was "through the wireless” (radio back then.. not internet!). And not everyone had one. We laughed about the toilet paper buying hysteria. Beth remembered during the war they grew their own food. They might of had to buy some dairy products (if they didn’t make it themselves). But the major shortage and rationed food was in fact tea! Now I’m sure a lot of our Macedon Ranges residents would of had the pleasure of meeting Beth. At the age of 90 she continues to selflessly give so much to our community. You might of seen her volunteering her time to St Paul’s Op shop (since it first opened!). She also helped start the Gisborne Olde Time Market. She has been the president of the Gisborne Ambulance Auxiliary and on so many other different committees in the community over the years. I also remember reading in the Gisborne Gazette that at the age of 10 she ran a raffle to raise funds for the 1939 fires. She also knitted socks for the Gisborne Red Cross for all the soldier during WW2. The list goes on and on. Community spirit is in her blood. So THANK YOU Beth! For all that you do and the time that you have so generously given over the years. 🙏🏻💕
Now here is a familiar & musical face of the ranges! A lot of you might of crossed paths with the lovely Jo-ann Irwin from Mini Maestros Gisborne at some point in your little ones pre-school life! Mini Maestros is one of our much loved local businesses that has been affected by the Covid-19 regulations. It was amazing to see how the Mini Maestro’s crew adapted to the new way of life and quickly got their classes up and running online for everyone. As much as we all miss seeing our beautiful Jo face-to-face, the online classes have brought the fun into our lounge rooms and has given the parents a bit of a break from finding ideas to entertain our little ones at home!! Jo also has a special private facebook group set up for members where there is plenty going on with regular posts from herself and her Bumblebee side-kick! Lots of fun. I can highly recommend the classes as my 2 little ones are signed up and love it! So here are a few photos I took of Jo & her gorgeous family for the #facesoftheranges. It was such a gorgeous day when I visited her home and I was delighted to see that her husband Noel looks after an awesome bunch of bees who reside in a special flow hive on their property (they were very cute and friendly😊). In amongst the mix of photos there are a few of Jo that I took at a musical afternoon in the park back in October last year… It’s nice to revisit some social, face-to-face times!!

Today, our gorgeous local flower shop @gisbornecottage_flowers made a lovely gesture and put a post on their facebook page offering free flowers for kids! We were lucky enough to take some of their beautiful little flower gems home. The kids were delighted because their toy drills had also arrived in the post today (which they keep reminding me are called “Bosch Hammer Drills”..!) They’d saved up for these with their pocket money, so the excitement was high! The drills were perfect for making holes in the top of the cardboard box the postman had dropped them off in. I love how he is managing to work during lockdown by getting some vitamin D, fresh air and practising a bit of yoga all at the same time! Wow!! What a day… Thank you all so much for letting me come to your homes (the outside of them!) and take photos of you all. It was epic! Weather and all! There are so many gorgeous photos that I can not wait to share. But I thought that I’d start with a photo of someone who means the absolute world to me. My Mum. She did the epic move from our family home in Cherokee (2.5 years ago) and found a new home in New Gisborne. She landed in the most wonderful community. Everyone in her street looks out for one and other and offers an immense amount of company & support. They meet regularly at Baringo for catch ups and have plenty of laughs. She’s surrounded by gorgeous souls. This makes my brother & I so happy. Especially as she lives alone after having lost our much loved father not long after she moved there... So when Covid19 crashed upon us all, the social distancing walls were one by one put up. I worried that my Mum would be lonely. But what has been so wonderful is seeing how those walls have not stopped my mother and her friends from keeping each other afloat. They all started a WhatsApp group with plenty of banter, funny memes, photo competitions and chatter. They are always out the front of each others houses on their walks checking in on each other over the fence with a cuppa (or wine!) in their hands. It’s lovely to see. And it warms my heart knowing that she has this support and that she gives it to others also… I just hope that everyone out there has at least one neighbour like the people that live in my beautiful Mum’s street. So! Hello Macedon Ranges folk!! I’m hoping to build up spirit and connection within our community during this crazy time. I’ll be commencing a project called Faces of the Ranges ( #facesoftheranges). To capture the brighter side of #stayathome life, I will be driving around our neighbourhood taking professional photos of household members in front of their homes (with at least a 3 metre distance between us!). This is absolutely free, it will be fun and you’ll get to keep a high-resolution photo that we can all look back on in years to come. It should only take around 5 minutes per household/business. Extra points to those that have their photo taken in their #stayathome attire (Eg. Dressing gowns, PJ’s, Dress-ups or be as creative as you like!). PLEASE NOTE: All social distancing rules apply. PLEASE DO NOT invite other family members or friends who do not reside at your home to be in your photo. This has all been ok’d by Gisborne police, as it is work related. As long as people remain on their properties and that we adhere to distancing rules, I will not be breaking any rules. The first run will be around Gisborne & Macedon on Easter Monday (13th of April). More locations & days will be announced if the first run is successful.
