Aren’t we going to the set?!” A few days ago my Titanic momma @mamaprestin Judy treated me and her other Titanic “children” to something from the set in Mexico again: a copy of her “Titanic driving pass” as she called it herself. She had this taped to her windshield so it would be easier to get through two checkpoints in Mexico and to the set. The main office on set printed these for all the core extras that had to drive there daily to make the traveling a bit less of a hassle. What a wonderful surprise this was. Vintage or replica? About a month ago or so I received these beautiful earrings made by Lina of @orsatis_atelier . They are Rose’s flying earrings and capture all the intricate details, including a wonderful design on the back of the earring (can be seen in picture 3) Since I own an original vintage pair of these earrings with a jade stone instead of a pearl I wanted to compare original and replica. You can see that the original is much smaller and even more delicate and thinner in the details that grace it. The vintage ones also feature a riffled detail all over. The gold pearl on top is bigger on the vintage earrings and smaller on the replica. The vintage pair closes with a screw back while Lina chose to opt for a stud. I do believe the originals are studs as well (or they might have been altered from screw back to stud to be more practical to wear in production). An Uruguayan first-class passenger who perished during the sinking, the body of Artagaveytia and the belongings that were in his pockets were rescued from the waters by the CS Mackay-Bennett, a ship hired by the White Star Line to recover the bodies that had been left floating. The corpse of Ramón Artagaveytia was inventoried with the number 22, and both the corpse and the belongings were sent to Uruguay in the aftermath of the sinking. The corpse of Ramón Artagaveytia was buried in the Central Cemetery of Montevideo, and the personal belongings that he carried with him during the shipwreck were kept by his brother Adolfo Artagaveytia. Once Adolfo died, the watch passed into the hands of his niece, Laura Artagaveytia Marcenal de Gard, and later to her son, Alberto Gard Artagaveytia, and finally to his niece, Josefina Gutiérrez Gard. Long before the invention of commercial flights, passengers would have time to write letters home during the long voyage across the seas to their new life. This unique and interesting letter home to Mother and Dad was written aboard the Canadian Pacific steamship "Empress of Scotland" on the 11th June 1930 and details their daughter April's journey in "lively" 3rd class, being waited on with 7 course meals, enduring rough seas and having every hope and confidence of success in Canada when they finally arrive in Quebec. It's an entertaining read and paints a picture of the life of a traveller during that era. This private correspondence is in excellent condition for its age and features 3 King George V stamps post-marked Quebec. It would make an brilliant inclusion to someone's maritime ephemera collection or could be used in an art assemblage, collage or mixed media project. The Empress of Scotland was a notable passenger liner that operated primarily in the mid-20th century. Originally built as the SS Duchess of Bedford, it was launched in 1928 for the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company. The ship was later renamed the SS Empress of Scotland in 1930, reflecting the naming convention of Canadian Pacific's "Empress" series of vessels. The Empress of Scotland was a luxurious and elegant ship, known for its opulent interiors and comfortable accommodations. It had a distinctive appearance with a single funnel and two masts, and its exterior design was characteristic of the Art Deco style popular during that era. Interestingly, plates and soup bowls from this service have Aynsley (!!) marks (1891-1915). White Star Line historians need to make further investigations. Over the weekend, I visited the Titanic Museum in Tennessee. It was a very special visit because it was the 111th anniversary of the sinking. Of course being a big Titanic fan, I had to purchase some souvenirs from the gift shop. I got a replica of Rose’s butterfly comb from the 1997 film ‘Titanic’. The necklace, earrings, and ring are exact replicas of jewelry found at the shipwreck in 1987.
