Who knew grape vines could grow this tall? On the border of Southern France and Northern Spain lies Basque country. We had the opportunity to taste at Ameztoi Vineyard today and were blown away by the wine and views 🍇😲🍷Ameztoi makes a very unique wine called Txakoli, which is cultivated from the native grape, Hondarrabi. This beautiful Basque wine has amazing acid, minerality, and fruit. @txakoliameztoi is a 5th generation family making delicious wines in a very interesting climate. They trained their vines to be tall to avoid the wet ground and to be protected by the ever-changing climate next to the Atlantic. They have created a leaf canopy to protect the grapes from storms, wind, and extreme sun. Ameztoi Vineyard harvests over 52 hectares (about 100+ acres) a year, resulting in 1-2,000 bottle production. With the altitude and steep slopes, all of their grapes are harvested by hand with a team of 60-70 people. This vineyard is a perfect example of how grapes can grow in such different environments. I absolutely love Frankfurt’s Palmengarten, which is partly botanical garden, partly landscape garden, and somehow very typical late 19th ct. #gesellschaftshauspalmengarten doesn’t look like on pic 1 anymore, but its ballroom, where #ciderworld took place has been restored to former belle epoque glory. Producers from France and Spain were among exhibitors. A pity UK wasn’t represented at all. I really love #ebbelwoi and drink it regularly. I’m #fromfrankfurt. Generally it’s to our region what sidra is to Asturias or Normandy and Britanny. Common and special at the same time, a key part of traditonal gastronomy. Which certainly is worth to retain, but times and tastes change. Cider producers try to adapt. They can’t survive on sticking to my idea of cider. It was a funny moment when I told the guy from #zapiainsagardoa I liked #txakoli and he instantly understood I had no problem with acidity. Can’t decide if it’s just me or a major trend perceptible acidity is off-putting for more and more folks. Anyway, después I tasted #cidrebrut from #cidreriedupaysdauray (Quiberon, Bretagne), which had acidity too, but whose character was different. Same applies to what I had to have, a schobbe from #keltereinöll, 1 of 2 remaining producers in Frankfurt. I skipped their range of monovarietal ciders. At this moment I realized apfelwein is like any drink, it can’t be kept from changing. Everywhere. But I really don’t need #applechardonnay. What I liked most was typical ciders from various european regions reminding me of great culinary moments in northern France and Spain. Anyway, I’ve had worse times in this location. Like attending #kindermodenschau with my nana ca. 1973. Back then I prefered sweetness to acidity which is perfectly normal for kids. I’m glad I’ve moved on in several ways. While tasting it, we had visions of sitting by the pool or at a cookout with friends on a warm summer afternoon. Heavenly! Shamefully late flashback to a terrific night with friends @no.no_please - an exciting new restaurant and bar with Sex Education decor vibes, and only a hop and skip from Brighton’s waterfront on Preston Street. Okay, yes, okay okay, I am sliiiiiightly biased, as this is the venture of my good friend Euan and his friends, but, rose tinted spectacles aside, the South East Asian-inspired food was extremely tasty - do NOT leave without trying the Egg and Soldier (prawn toast & egg yolk), the No No Slow Beef Cheek Curry, the BBQ Prawn or the Charred Hispi. Wine: Our table smashed the extremely refreshing Rezabal Txakoli Rosé quicker than you can say Fiery Finger (another of their dishes). Super lovely, and presumably supplied by the good folk @butlerswinecellar 🫡 NNP also make small batch cocktails (my Smoky Negroni was 🌟) and plenty of nolo options too. @bodegatalleriberria Talleri Berria Upategia eta Mahastiak (Talleri Berria Bodega i Vinyes) és un projecte al barri d’Erroteta del municipi de Morga, al cor de Biscaia, que els seus tres socis propietaris (Ricardo Uribe, Iñaki Sagasti i Josu Aurrekoetxea) afirmen que “neix de la passió que, des de fa segles, es transmet de generació a generació: l’elaboració del nostre vi, el txakoli”. S’autoanomenen “el temple del txakoli a Biscaia”. De fet, el celler i el seu entorn tenen molt d’encant. Gure Aberria del 2022, el vi protagonista avui divendres del Què fem? de @lavanguardia , és l’actual vi institucional de la DO @bizkaikotxakolina . Està elaborat amb un 80% de la varietat hondarrabi zuri i amb un 20% d’hondarrabi zuri zerratia. El seu nom vol dir la nostra pàtria. És de color groc palla, amb una tonalitat verdosa i daurada. Les seves notes recorden la fruita blanca (poma àcida), els cítrics (closca de llimona) i el fonoll. Amb un toc d’amargor final compensat per la maduresa de la fruita. Té una bona sensació d’acidesa. S’expressa amb frescor tot i ser fill d’una anyada inusualment càlida i seca. És molt varietal, i provoca la salivació. El seu preu (PVP) és de 8,50€.
