🍇 Monastrell is a red grape also known as Mourvèdre in France and Mataro in Australia. Monastrell is thought to have originated in Spain and is well adapted to hot dry climates. 🇪🇸 In Spain plantings are particularly concentrated in the south east of the country around València, Murcia and Alicante, and it is the flagship grape of Jumilla (pronounced hoo-mee-ya) which has many old vine, ungrafted plantings (swipe to see some old bush vines). 🍷 Monastrell is often said to have high tannins and high alcohol although this can be tempered with careful management. It is often blended with Grenache and Syrah, becoming the ‘M’ in GSM blends made famous in the Rhône. It can also be used to make rosé or made into sweetened or fortified styles. 🍒 Depending on the style, Monastrell can show herbal, savoury, sometimes meaty aromas, or be more perfumed with red and dark fruits like plums and blackberries, sometimes showing smoky, spicy, chocolate or liquorice notes. Revisiting the 2012 López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Tempranillo, and 10% Viura from Rioja, Spain, made in the classic Clarete style. Aged for four years in American oak barrels (racked twice a year) and another six years in the bottle, this rosé is remarkably consistent and another spectacular vintage. On the nose, it presents an exquisite floral perfume with subtle nuances of strawberries and almonds. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, dark oxidized copper-colored, tangy, luscious, and perfectly textured, with notes of orange peel, peach skin, strawberry, tangerine, blood orange, almonds, Damascus rose, and copper. The finish is medium and lush, highlighted by superb balance and acidity. The Gran Reserva is a very special bottle, produced and released only in exceptional vintages. 2008 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Blanco Rioja Reserva, a blend of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasía grapes sourced from the historic winery’s 100 hectares planted in 1913 on the right bank of the Ebro River in Spain. It is spectacular! Such consistency vintage after vintage. Beautifully balanced and structured and still evolving after 16 years. Delicious, full of complexity, extremely vibrant with tons of finesse and with an ever present velvety creamy liquorish mouthfeel. Deep glowing golden color with notes of damascus, dark honey, hazelnuts, lemon, melon and concentrated oak. This is old school wine making at its best. Fermentation takes place without skins in small oak vats using native yeasts from the vines for 7 days. The wine is then aged for 6 years in 225 litre Bordeaux oak barrels made at the winery itself. During the aging process the wine is also racked twice a year. An interesting note is that before bottleling the wine is fined using fresh egg whites, an ancient clarification and stabilization process that removes harsh tannins and is much gentler on the wine. Viña Tondonia Reserva Blanco is bottled without being filtered. Incredible wine that leaves you craving form more after every sip.
