Kim Bài of the emperor. Nguyễn dynasty, reign of Khải Định, 1916-1925. This gold bài belonged to the emperor. Like the one made for the Crown Prince (see previous post) it is ornate with a gold filigree decor, pearls & diamonds. However the stones here are much bigger and the inscriptions are incrusted with pearls. The plaque reads 太平天子 [Peace and Prosperity to the Son of Heaven] as the monarch was thought to detain his right to rule from heaven. Since the advent of Emperor Bảo Đại (1913-1997) the back of the plaque is inscribed with his name : 保大 (Pic. 4). He had succeeded to his father Khải Định (1885-1925) for whom the bài was made and whose name undoubtedly appeared first on the back (Pic. 3). Bảo Long (1936-2007), son of Bảo Đại, sold this bài at auctions for 33,000 Francs in 1995. Sold 290.000€ at auctions by @beaussantlefevreassocies in 2024. April 30th marks a significant moment in Vietnamese history, commonly known as Vietnamese Reunification Day. This day goes beyond the American withdrawal from Vietnam and the 'Fall of Saigon.' It's a day that symbolizes the end of a divided Vietnam and the beginning of a reunified nation. While the name 'Fall of Saigon' evokes images of chaos and loss, it is crucial to remember that this day also represents the hope and joy of Vietnamese families reuniting after decades of division. The reunification of Vietnam in 1975 was a pivotal event, signaling the end of a turbulent era and paving the way for the rebuilding of the country as a whole. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the broader narrative of resilience, reconciliation, and the merging of different ideologies into a single, unified Vietnam. While there can be many perspectives on this day based on different experiences, it is important to honor our heritage by exploring the diverse aspects of our history and challenging historical biases. 🌟 #VietnameseReunificationDay #vietnamesehistory

🇻🇳🕊️ Reflect on history's turning point with us! On April 30, 1975, the world witnessed the Fall of Saigon, a moment of profound significance marking the end of the Vietnam War as communist forces gained control of the city. The formal conclusion came with the unconditional surrender of South Vietnamese President Dương Văn Minh. 🌟⚔️ The End of an Era As communist forces closed in on Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, the world watched with bated breath as the tumultuous conflict that had defined a generation neared its conclusion. The Fall of Saigon symbolized the culmination of years of strife, sacrifice, and suffering for the people of Vietnam and the soldiers who fought on both sides of the conflict. 🏙️💔 A Nation Divided The Vietnam War had torn apart the fabric of Vietnamese society, pitting brother against brother and dividing families along ideological lines. The fall of Saigon marked the triumph of communist forces in reunifying the country under a single government, but it also left scars yet to heal. 🕊️🇻🇳 The Human Cost Amidst the chaos, countless lives were forever changed. Families were torn apart, and communities were ravaged by the savages of war. The unconditional surrender of South Vietnamese President Dương Văn Minh brought a sense of finality to the conflict, but it also brought with it the sobering realization of the cost of war. 💔🕊️ Towards Reconciliation As the dust settled over Saigon and the guns fell silent, the people of Vietnam faced the daunting task of rebuilding their nation and reconciling their fractured past. The Fall of Saigon marked the end of one chapter in Vietnamese history but also opened the door to new beginnings, as the country embarked on a journey of reconstruction. 🌅🤝 Join us in reflecting on this anniversary, as we honor the memories of those who lost their lives and strive to build a world where peace prevails over conflict. 🌟🇻🇳 #FallOfSaigon #VietnamWar #HistoricAnniversary #PeaceAndReconciliation #HumanCostOfWar #StampCollecting #LiverpoolStamps #HistoricalReflections #EndOfConflict #WarAndPeace #VietnameseHistory #LegacyOfSacrifice #NewBeginnings #HopeForTheFuture 🇻🇳🕊️

Today marked the 49th year anniversary of the end of the Vietnam 🇻🇳 War 30th April 1975-30th April 2024. For foreigners, they write about their perspectives without knowing the real pain of the diaspora of the Vietnamese people. For those who are like me, born in Vietnam, grew up in Australia 🇦🇺 and am an Australian citizen. I still get stereotyped for speaking ‘perfect’ English. A slight surprise look on a stranger’s face when I tell them that I actually have a PhD in literacy written in English at Monash University. I am truly a ‘lamington meets pho’ as I have written in one of my published journals for my thesis. #vietnam #vietnamesehistory photo credit to Nik Wheeler.

1_ Crown Prince Bảo Long (1936-2007) by Madame D’Ora (1881-1963), 1955. 2_ Kim Bài of Crown Prince Bảo Long. Nguyễn dynasty, c. 1939. Bài are a particular type of decoration worn on the chest to identify its bearer. The plaques are inscribed with the name of a function or status. Worn by a great variety of individuals, from guards to ministers and monarchs, their materials follow the rank of their owner. Through their functional origins bài evoke tenets of Confucianism such as the importance of hierarchy and of order, reminding us that everything has a name and everyone has a role. This gold bài is ornate with a gold filigree decor, pearls & diamonds and belonged to the eldest son of the last emperor. It was granted to him after he was designated Crown Prince in 1938. Because he was only 3 at the time of his investiture in 1939 the bài is small compared to others. The plaque reads 東宮皇太子 [Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace] as east was the cardinal point associated with heirs in East-Asian monarchies such as Việt Nam, Japan and China. Thus his official residence in the Forbidden City was located east of the Imperial Palace. Bảo Long sold his bài for 21,000 Francs in 1995 twelve years before his death. Bài sold 190.000€ & portrait sold 650€ at auctions by @beaussantlefevreassocies in 2024. Pic. 3 by Madame D’Ora, 1955 ©Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. Pic. 4 Bảo Long, ca. 1939. The students and staff from Orange continued their exploration of Hanoi, visiting the Hoa Lo Prison Museum. Initially named Maison Centrale and established by the French in 1896, this prison was designed to hold anti-French nationalists and later, during the Vietnam War, US pilots who were shot down. The prison played a significant role in two major wars, detaining notable figures such as former US Pilot John McCain and Peter Peterson, another pilot who later became the first ambassador to Vietnam after diplomatic relations were normalised. Subsequently, the group travelled to Hoi An, an ancient port trading town known for its rich history and the influence of various trading nations, including the Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese. During their orientation tour, students explored ancient buildings, Chinese and Vietnamese temples, observing the foreign influences evident in the architecture, cuisine, and ancient monuments. #explorehoian #schooltourvietnam #hoaloprison #vietnamesehistory

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu came to be a a final act in France’s attempt to reestablish colonial rule in Vietnam. The battle was fought from March 13th 1954 to May 7th culminating in a decisive victory for the Vietnamese forces. France 🇫🇷 had been fighting in Vietnam since 1946 in a bid to restore colonial rule to the country yet this had proved to be a major challenge with the Vietnamese forces fighting for independence known as the Viet minh being extremely successful and proving to be highly effective at using guerilla tactics. France had dropped thousands of French para troopers 🪖🪂 into Dien bien phu in November 1953. It was a mountainous region that the French hoped to use as a stronghold and with the airstrip it contained it seemed perfect. Although 15,000 troops were deployed there by the French they proved to be overstretched defending the huge perimeter and were also greatly outnumbered by the Viet Minh troops led by Vo Nguyen Giap who many deem as one of the greatest military strategists of the 20th century. France hoped it could weaken Vietnamese supply lines and also draw the Viet Minh into an open conflict which it believed it could win. Yet, this was a dream far from reality as Giap defeated the French troops decisively. Shelling began hitting the French 🇫🇷 from completely camouflaged positions in the hills which seemed invisible and the Viet Minh attacked the entire area. The following day the airstrip was destroyed. The Viet Minh used trenches and dug closer and closer to the French cutting them off. France tried to launch counter attacks but its troops were repelled and depleted from horrifically high casualty rates and surrender followed. Both sides suffered hugely with over 2200 French troops killed and 11000 captured. In comparison Vietminh casualties exceeded 23,000. This brutal battle signified the end of France’s fight in Vietnam and the beginning of a new chapter. #vietnamhistory #history #dienbienphu #historic #vietnamwar #frenchhistory #historical #1stvietnamwar #battleofdienbienphu #militaryhistory #frenchmilitaryhistory #vietnamesehistory

The Spiritual Heart of Vietnam: The Legacy of Buddhism Vietnam's rich tapestry of culture and tradition is deeply intertwined with the serene teachings of Buddhism. Tracing its roots back to as early as the 2nd century AD, Buddhism first arrived in Vietnam through maritime trade, weaving its way into the very fabric of Vietnamese society. Over the centuries, Buddhism in Vietnam has flourished, giving rise to a unique blend of Theravada, practiced by the Khmer people in the South, and Mahayana, predominant among the ethnic Vietnamese. This diversity in Buddhist traditions has fostered a vibrant spiritual landscape across the country. The influence of Buddhism on Vietnamese culture is profound and pervasive. It is visible in the architectural marvels of ancient pagodas that dot the landscape, the tranquil practices of meditation that guide daily life, and the vibrant festivals like Vesak that illuminate the country in celebration of Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and entry into Nirvana. Buddhism's ethos of compassion and mindfulness is deeply embedded in the Vietnamese way of life, influencing everything from art and literature to the compassionate treatment of animals. It teaches a philosophy of peace and harmony, guiding principles that resonate strongly in the heart of Vietnam's culture. As we explore Vietnam's spiritual heritage, we're reminded of the enduring power of Buddhism to shape societies, inspire cultures, and touch hearts. Let's cherish and learn from this ancient wisdom that continues to light the way for millions. ------------------------------------------------------- ASIA MYSTIKA TRAVEL - THE SOUL OF JOURNEY Website: https://asiamystika.com/ Tel/Whatsapp: +84 866227878 Email: [email protected] #BuddhismInVietnam #CulturalHeritage #spiritualjourney #VietnameseHistory #VietnamVoyage #travelagency #vietnam #historical #traveling #traveltips #travel #VietnamTravel #vietnamtravel #travelguide #TravelVietnam #buddha #buddhism #zen #golden

Visit a piece of Vietnamese history at Hoa Lo Prison! Nestled in the heart of Hanoi, the Hoa Lo Prison, famously known as the "Hanoi Hilton" or Maison Centrale, stands as a testament to Vietnam's turbulent struggle for independence. Built in 1896 by the French, this imposing brick structure was originally designed to house Vietnamese political prisoners during the colonial era. The architecture, crafted by French architect Auguste Henri Vildieu, features a unique three-story cellblock in a radiating pattern, centralizing surveillance and showcasing an era of architectural prowess amidst its daunting purpose. Despite the harsh conditions faced by inmates, including overcrowding, poor sanitation, and meager rations, Hoa Lo Prison was a crucible for ideas and resistance, with many of Vietnam's future leaders forging their resolve within its walls. Transitioning from a symbol of oppression to a beacon of historical significance, Hoa Lo Prison now invites visitors from around the globe. As a museum, it offers a profound glimpse into the resilience and spirit of the Vietnamese people, with exhibits that narrate the stories of those who lived and suffered there. Whether you're a history buff, a traveler seeking to understand Vietnam's rich cultural tapestry, or someone in search of unique experiences, Hoa Lo Prison is a must-visit. Feels like forever again since I posted something! Working on a personal project under @calebstaker ‘s mentorship. It’s been a great learning experience and I’ve improved a lot. Here are a few observational sketches I’ve done as part of a weekly assignment. The references are pictures of Vietnamese Kinh and Vietnamese H’mong people from the early 1900s. Despite being turbulent, it was a period with the most records in Vietnam’s history. More to come, so please stay tuned! #sketchbook #sketchbookart #sketching #sketchbookdrawing #dailysketches #sketchdaily #asian #quicksketch #justdraw #pencildrawing #figuredrawing #drawsomething #draweveryday #artofdrawing #drawdaily #mysketchbook #animaldrawing #fundrawing #practicedrawing #peoplesketching #sketchdump #vizdev #vizdevart #digitalart #digitalsketch #vietnamesehistory #vietnamshistory #vietnameseculture #hmong #hmongpeople

📚Women’s History Month – Huyền Trân 🏮 Princess Huyền Trân was a royal figure of the Trần dynasty in Vietnam, remembered primarily for her role in a significant territorial expansion of the country during the 14th century. She became a symbol of sacrifice and diplomacy in Vietnamese history through her marriage to the king of Champa, a neighboring kingdom. Her significance in Vietnamese women’s history lies in the cultural and historical memory of Vietnam, where she is remembered not only for her role in the expansion of the country but also as a figure of strength, sacrifice, and patriotism. Memorials and temples dedicated to her honor these contributions, ensuring her legacy continues to inspire and hold relevance in the contemporary cultural narrative of Vietnam. #womenshistorymonth #vietnamesewomen #vietnamesehistory

When touching down in Ho Chi Minh City be careful not to drown in the sea of mopeds. Following the path of least resistance mopeds find a way onto every sidewalk and down every alleyway. Be it in a restaurant, at a historical landmark or in the bath, you will be swimming in mopeds. 🛵 . Formerly known as Saigon, this vibrant metropolis was named after the revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh 🇻🇳 Founded in the 17th century, it has been shaped by French colonialism, war, and a thriving culture. From iconic landmarks like the Notre-Dame Cathedral to the bustling streets of District 1, there's always something new to discover in this concrete jungle. . . . . . #HoChiMinhCity #Saigon #Vietnam #History #Colonialism #Revolution #Culture #Landmarks #Explore #Travel #Cityscape #UrbanLife #Architecture #VietnameseCulture #Heritage #Asia #FrenchColonial #WarHistory #Memories #Discover #Adventure #Wanderlust #CityLife #HistoricCity #AsianDestination #Travelgram #StreetLife #HoChiMinh #VietnameseHistory

Our last Hanoi tour visit was to Hỏa Lò Prison, later dubbed the 'Hanoi Hilton' by American POWs, which was an emotional experience. Hỏa Lò translates roughly as "fiery furnace" and originates from the abundance of shops selling stoves in the area during pre-colonial times. This place holds a lot of history from colonial times, when the French built Hỏa Lò to house Vietnamese revolutionaries and political dissidents, and it's hard to put into words the suffering that went on here, especially for women. Viewing the small concrete cells, where prisoners were shackled by their ankles, was a grim experience, although there were also stories of extraordinary bravery in the face of adversity - in 1951, 17 death-row prisoners cut through prison bars to escape through narrow tunnels into the sewer. The few who survived encountering a patrol of soldiers outside went on to join the resistance movement.  Our tour guide mentioned how differently the later American POWs were treated, even getting turkey for Christmas dinner. In the end, even though places like Hỏa Lò are not easy to visit, they're an important reminder of the worst of humanity, but also of the incredible resilience of the human spirit. #hanoi #hanoitour #hoaloprison #hanoihilton #vietnamesehistory #colonialtimes #vietnam #humanresilience #prisonescape #historicalsites #vietnamwar #indochinawar

DA LAT DAY 2 AND HO CHI MINH DAY 1 🌀Headed to the crazy house in da lat, similar to the maze bar but much more extreme! It’s very random and has no history but so cool to walk around and it’s a hotel still open for business! It costs 60,000 (1.90) dong to get in and there is a cute cafe, has the best strawberry smoothie🍓 ~That afternoon I got the bus to Ho Chi Minh City~ 🌀The next day was up bright and early for the chi chu tunnels tour I booked through the hostel for 500,000 dong (£15) which was good value as was a while away and had a tour guide! The place was interesting to learn about and some people did the shooting but I opted out! Was so cool to go in the 100 metre tunnel the soldiers used to work in, I don’t know how as I was ready to come out in the short time we spent down there! 🌀We got back at around 2pm and I decided to head to the war remnants museum to make the most of my full day in Ho Chi Minh as only had two nights here but one full day! I enjoyed this so much, some of the photos and context were so raw and revealed so much about Vietnamese culture during the war😞some of the scenes were really heartbreaking, there is heaps of things to read so I got an audiobook and still took me ages to walk around! Can’t remember the ticket price but 100% worth every penny🤎 🌀Ended the evening trying my first bubble tea which I wasn’t so much of a fan and a donut at the apartment cafes!🧋🍩 #backpacking #seasia #solotraveller #wanderlust #travel #femalesolotravel #vietnam🇻🇳 #vietnamtravel #vietnamwar #vietnamdalat #vietnamhochiminhcity #dalat #hochiminhcity #hochiminh #chichutunnels #crazyhousedalat #warremnantsmuseum #apartmentcafesaigon #vietnamesehistory #vietnameseculture #fyp

The One Pillar Pagoda was originally built by Emperor Ly Thai Tong in 1049. According to records, the childless emperor met Quan The Am Bo Tat, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, in his dreams and was handed a male child. The emperor eventually married a young peasant girl and had a son. To express his gratitude he built this pagoda, which is made of wood on a single stone base. This structure is shaped like a lotus, the national flower of Vietnam and symbol of purity. It was destroyed by the French in 1954 and then rebuilt by the new Vietnamese government. . . . . . . . #Hanoi #HàNội #VietnamTravel #HanoiVietnam #VisitHanoi #HanoiTravel #VisitVietnam #TravelVietnam #ExploreVietnam #DiscoverVietnam #VisitAsia #TravelAsia #ExploreAsia #DiscoverAsia #SoutheastAsia #BeautifulDestinations #IAmATraveler #Wanderlust #SoloTravel #TravelPhotography #InternationalTravel #FujifilmXT5 #MyFujifilmLegacy #HanoiWander #BuddhistTemple #OnePillarPagoda #VietnameseArchitecture #VietnameseHistory
