Took advantage of the warm weather and the 175 CFS flows on the lower Owens River in the afternoon. Was joined by Tuesday Talk regular Rick Delmas. Fly fishing was tough. No hatches and no feeding fish. Thoroughly covered the water looking for trout and a fly rod. A fly fisher fell in and lost his rod. I’ve looked several times with no success. The river is going up starting Friday.

Starting on Friday April 27 flows on the lower Owens River will begin increasing. By Monday flows are expected to be at 325 CFS which is too high to safely wade the lower Owens River. There are a few days left to fish the wild trout section before the increase starts. Fishing on the lower has been good with bead head flash back pheasant tail nymphs, olive quilldigons and hot spot pheasant tail nymphs. Not a lot of surface activity available right now.

For the past six years, 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕 has resided in Los Angeles, where he plays with his countrified, bluesified, and grassified band 🎙️ Not unlike many California grass bands, 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒛𝒊𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒅 is a progressive bluegrass project. The band's roots are in bluegrass, although they are keen to incorporate other genres into their sound, such as jam, soul, or traditional country 👌🏼 Just recently, the band won 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗱 at the 𝙏𝙤𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙟𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙞𝙙𝙙𝙡𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙨𝙩, one of the longest-running contests of its kind! In October 2023, the band competed in the 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 at 𝙃𝙪𝙘𝙠 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙣 𝙅𝙪𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙤𝘾𝙖𝙡 and took home 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲, as well. In February '24, the band was overjoyed to open for 𝗔𝗝 𝗟𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 at 𝘗𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘴 in 𝘗𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯, 𝘊𝘈. Sunday mornings are for mule-ing around. Sister Sarah invited her rider to get on by walking over to the fence and lining herself up. She and her rider then proceeded to just hang out together, standing still and simply enjoying each other’s company. Mules sure are smart, aren’t they?!?!? 💕 Ps - Sister Sarah had her eyes closed and was enjoying herself. Her slightly cranky face in the second picture is my fault - I dared to interrupt their time by getting into the arena and capture their precious moments. Initially, she wasn’t too pleased that I showed up, I wasn’t invited to the party - how dare I interrupt her nap time with her human friend! I think it was @joe_a_lane - the mountain rambling, home brewing, thank you reason @mountainramblerbrewery exists as an Eastern Sierra watering + socializing hole - that first turned me on, many years ago, to the "Sheepherder Loop," a dry and exposed desert wander winding it's way up through the colorful rock outcrops of the Volcanic Tablelands before briefly touching the pinyon-juniper zone on the northeast shoulder of Casa Diablo Mtn only to quickly work it's way back down to the Fish Slough wetlands. The loop's moniker comes from the two parallel roads it utilizes - South & North Sheepherder - names I've yet to actually see on maps, but, not surprisingly, known to Joe, who never ceases to impress me with his obscure local knowledge over impromptu pints at the Brewery. With the snowline retreating almost visibly in real time up the imposing West Ridge of omnipresent 14252' White Mtn Pk, and the best (read: coolest) of the Tablelands running season rapidly coming to a close, @mikemcdermottphoto @dirtdiva333 & I headed out to try and capture a taste of the magic that is the softly sloped southern edge of the Long Valley Caldera. I'd say we succeeded. Our cold blooded friends 🐍 🦎 have been out enjoying the sunny days and warm rocks with us amongst the crags and boulders. Be on the lookout for chuckwallas, garter snakes, collared lizards, rattlers, and horned and western fence lizards while you are out! Fortunately for our reptilian frens (but unfortunately for us), it’s gonna be hot 🔥 this weekend.. very hot. Here’s the latest: Tablelands: Did we say it’s gonna be hot? With highs in the uppers 70’s, the tablelands are gonna roast.. climb early or late in the day and drink lots of water. 💧 The shady chasms of the Sad Boulders should be the most pleasant areas to climb in. Buttermilk Country: Again, the best conditions will be found early or late in the day. PLEASE! Do NOT drive around the mud hole to access the Pollen Grains or Get Carter Boulder! 🚫 Folks have created extensive resource damage by driving around this obstacle and have greatly damaged the road making access even more difficult. Please walk in from the main parking lot by the bathrooms. Owens River Gorge: Plan to start early and chase the shade! Water flows have been up in the gorge so expect some river crossings to be a bit treacherous! 🌊 Use caution! Pine Creek: Ahhhhh, spectacular Pine Creek Canyon is once again in season. 🏔️ Early morning shade can be a bit chilly but it won’t be hard to find those Goldilock’s conditions. Sunny crags can be a bit miserable so plan to hit them early or wait until they fall into the shade. (The PSOM and Elderberry walls seem to hit the shade around 2-3pm) The porta-potty has not been installed yet so please bring a wag bag with ya! 💩 💼 With all of the Earth Day 🌎 festivities in town this weekend, we will NOT be hosting climber coffee.
