This week is infertility awareness week. Infertility is such a confusing, mixed bag, emotional bomb field for me. I have heard people who have tried for a few months label themselves infertile. I have known people who have only had one child and not able to have more say they have infertility. I believe it is real. I believe it is true to each situation. The pressure, the anxiety, the disappointment and the anguish of feeling emptiness unlike any other. . . . But infertility to me, today, at this crossroads in my life is not how I define myself. No I have never successfully carried a child in my womb and accomplish that miraculous event of biological motherhood. I have been told I have not tried hard enough, explored answers deep enough, been fully capable enough and that must be the reason. No. It is true. And yet it is also not quite the period on the end of the sentence. I have many children. My family is crawling with them. I have been called mother by so many sweet lips that it is hard to say that I am infertile. . . . When I exam my own short comings as a woman I have no words on how to truly show the deep wounds buried beneath. My scars themselves show you I have been strong enough to endure the trauma of the womb. My heart hangs in tatters only visible to those who see with more than their eyes. And my soul, well, my soul is comprised of pristine shatter, held together only because each individual piece is falling apart. But being all together is not what I desire to be if it makes me less of a mom to my many children. Infertility. You are painful. You can also give new life. You are a obstacle. You are not the foundation of who I am. I am a mother. Despite you. I am a mother . . . . .
