🇬🇧 One of the most distinctive animals of the Pampas is the armadillo but in some parks and reserves, unfortunately, tourists have turned it into a freak show. In the Valdes Peninsula, for example, it is common to see these animals approach as a dog would, attracted by the food visitors give them-often. A behavior that is dangerous for armadillos, which instead of feeding on chips and sandwiches should eat carcasses, small vertebrates or insects, and for those who approach it since they can bite, scratch or attack diseases and parasites. In Península Valdés alone, more than 260,000 animals were killed between 1917 and 1953. During the same period, the total number of animals slaughtered in Argentina exceeded half a million. Over the past century, the activity was regulated, and in 1953 the hunting of fur seals was banned. Il caldo soffocante delle province di Corrientes e Missiones, con le acque brillanti di Iberà e le decine di Capibara intente a brucare l’erba a pochi metri da me. L’elegante e decadente bellezza di Buenos Aires che mi ha regalato nuovi amici, braccia accoglienti, il sapore amaro del mate che dà dipendenza e un nuovo gusto di gelato preferito (mousse di limone). Il vento della costa Patagonica e il vino rosso in spiaggia, come naufraghi, dopo settimane di freddo, fatica e notti insonni tra articoli, video e conferenze. Gli armadilli che giocano con i fili e interrompono la connessione Internet, ricordandomi che è importante tornare alla realtà oltre allo schermo. L’umidità e il frastuono di “agua” e “ûasú” (Iguazù) che in Guaranì significa “grande acqua”. Il mio primo giaguaro in libertà: un’ombra veloce, lunga un istante. Ho preso tutto. 🇬🇧 Southern rockhoppers are among the world’s smallest penguin species. They live in the Southern Hemisphere and, to date, 650,000 breeding pairs have been counted. There are 15 breeding sites in Chile and Argentina while another 36 are in the Falkland Islands. Although they are not hunted and their eggs have not been taken for many years now, southern rockhopper penguin populations are declining. Over the past 30 years, it is estimated that globally the population has declined by nearly 25%, but at some sites, such as the Falklands, the decline is as much as 90%. Possible causes include fishing, of which they are often prey by-catch, climate change and the effects it has in the Southern Ocean trophic web, the spread of invasive species and disease. To date, the species is considered vulnerable. Therefore, the establishment of protected areas such as the Isla Penguino Interjurisdictional Park are critical. 🇮🇹 I saltaroccia del sud sono tra le specie di pinguini più piccoli al mondo. Vivono nell’emisfero Sud e, ad oggi, ne sono state contate 650.000 coppie riproduttive. In Cile e Argentina esistono 15 siti riproduttivi mentre altri 36 si trovano nelle Isole Falkland. Sebbene non vengano cacciati e le loro uova non vengano prelevate ormai da molti anni, le popolazioni di pinguini rockhopper meridionali stanno diminuendo. During the expedition to Argentina, we spent 3 days together with a colony of 127 thousand pairs of Magellanic Penguins. The first few hours, the smell of guano, fish and and dead chick bodies is nauseating. Then, as time passes, the nose gets used to it. The donkey braying-like cry becomes a constant companion, a lullaby when the sun goes down, is a wake-up call in the morning at dawn. The Cabo Virgenes penguin colony is one of the 3 largest colonies in Argentina. During the last 25 years it has considerably increased its numbers despite the constant habitat loss, and it went from 90 thousand pairs in the late 90s to the actual number. 🇮🇹 Durante la spedizione in Argentina, abbiamo trascorso 3 giorni insieme a una colonia di 127 mila coppie di pinguini di Magellano. Nelle prime ore, l’odore di guano, pesce e corpi di pulcini morti è nauseante. Poi, con il passare del tempo, il naso si abitua. Il grido simile a un raglio d’asino diventa un compagno costante, una ninna nanna quando il sole tramonta, una sveglia al mattino all’alba. La colonia di pinguini di Cabo Virgenes è una delle 3 colonie più grandi dell’Argentina. Mi piace pensare sia capace di tutto questo, e anche di più. Con quella sua crestina rossa e lo sguardo curioso, mentre insegna al suo giovane pulcino, come procacciarsi da solo il cibo. Il Cardinale ciuffo rosso (Paroaria coronata) è un uccello nativo dell’Argentina, Bolivia, Brasile meridionale, Paraguay e Uruguay. È stato introdotto dall’uomo alle Hawaii e a Porto Rico.
