Ik ben net terug van een weekje namibië en wat een prachtige bestemming!! 😍 Zoals jullie kunnen zien op deze mooie sfeerbeelden heb ik genoten van prachtige lodges, ongelofelijk lekker eten, super vriendelijke mensen, ongezien mooie natuur en avontuurlijke safari’s.. 🦒🐘 Aangezien ik een weekje weg ben geweest heb ik niet heel Namibië kunnen zien maar heb ik de focus gelegd op de regio rond Windhoek (Habitas Namibia) - de regio rond Etosha National Park (Ongava) en de regio Damaraland. Elke plek was fantastisch mooi met elk zijn hoogtepunten. Namibië is rustig, ongerept en snakt naar ontdekking. De vriendelijkheid waarmee ik overal ben ontvangen is gewoon geweldig. Rijden in Namibië (links vd baan) is een combinatie tussen snelwegen & avontuurlijke off road paden, geen enkel moment heb ik problemen ervaren (zelfs niet verkeerd gereden 💃 ). Het land is veilig en er zijn voldoende stops onderweg om te tanken of een honger te stillen. "This month, as we celebrate World Hyena Day, I’m reminiscing about the first time I saw a brown hyena. I was on an early morning walk in the dry Khumib riverbed and it was a typical Skeleton Coast morning: quiet, cold, wet from the thick layer of fog. A little mystical. The hyena silently, suddenly, appeared through the fog and I was petrified, frozen on the spot. Time stood still as I watched the hyena with bated breath. It was a lot bigger than I expected, it had beautiful big brown eyes and its shaggy coat was wet from the fog. I could see little droplets on its face and lashes. It vanished in the fog as quietly as it appeared and I could only hear soft crunching on the gravel as it walked away from me. I knew very little of these scavengers then, and I would come to learn later that this is what they do. Light, layers, texture ⛰️ Driving the Sani Pass is humbling in more than one way, but if you’re going solo it’s hard to take it all in and stay on the road 😅 Breathtaking is a word that comes to mind. Both for the views and also if you happen to get too close to the edge, well… I think you get the point. Some tips to make it easier 👇🏼 - Descend instead of ascend. Leave early afternoon because most of the tours from South Africa reach the top around then. Hang out at the @sanimountainlodge, enjoy a coffee, and watch the cars come up. When the bar gets busy, you know it’s your time to leave and the chances of you running into oncoming traffic will be far slimmer! - Find the seasonal sweet spot. Where the snow pack has melted, but it’s not tourist high season yet. The less traffic, the better. Also the dryer the roads! - Finally, don’t forget to stamp in and/or out of Lesotho but be careful! Lesotho border patrol is used to people coming up and going back down same day on tours. I entered the country elsewhere and went to stamp out. They assumed I had come up the pass and failed to stamp in, so they inked up and gave me both an entry and exit record. Funding through tourism dollars helps support their causes around Africa, and travelers who are keen on seeing some of the projects get a first hand glimpse into work being done in Zimbabwe from their Vic Falls camp. We spent time at the Literacy Center (how sweet are the kids?!), plus went to the @jafutafoundation to watch artists at work. One of the coolest projects? In collaboration with @childreninthewilderness, artists are turning snare wire into jewelry (and obvi I’m not one to pass up a shopping opportunity). Kudos to whoever birthed this idea! We’ve heard countless stories about snares (& met many guides working on de-snaring projects) and to see the wire be upcycled this way is pretty amazing. Finally, these paper makers who have given me a whole new appreciation for those pretty cards we buy. Watching the multi-step process here is amazing, and seeing women in this small community have an opportunity for income is so powerful. My trips usually start by finding one experience I want above all else and then letting everything else fall into place around that. For South Africa and Lesotho, I was determined to drive Sani Pass. This infamous road traverses the Great Escarpment of Southern Africa, cutting through the Drakensberg Mountains. It’s in a proverbial “no man’s land”… somewhere between the South African border (at the bottom of the pass) and the Lesotho entry point (top of the pass). A 4x4 is required to tackle the 2,876m of elevation down a loose-rock road filled with switchbacks. If it rains, it’s virtually impassable. Lucky for me, I had just arrived as winter was ending and the snow melt was gone. After getting to the car rental in Johannesburg, they kindly informed me they had no 4x4’s available. Of course. With some negotiating and hours of waiting, we settled on a RAV4. Better than nothing, but questionable as to if it would be allowed on the road. I had to go back to the drawing board and reverse my route. Originally the plan was to drive up from South Africa, but they’re known to turn people away if they feel the car isn’t suited. There was only one thing to do — cut into Lesotho elsewhere and descend the pass instead of ascend. I figured it’d be much easier to navigate going down and also less of a chance someone would stop me 🤞🏼 The strategizing worked and before I knew it I was on my stomach at the top of the pass to avoid the wind, staring down at what was in my future. After a few lattes at Africa’s highest pub and watching a few other cars come up,,I stamped out of Lesotho and slowwwwllyyy started to descend this rocky path. There’s no where to stop or pull over, even with oncoming traffic. Once you start, there’s no going back.
