Its prime position in the dry savannah interior, set on one of the main channels that feeds the Delta, means year-round adventures on land and water. Contemporary and luxurious, the camp is as lavish and lush as its beautiful surroundings, which are home to an abundant and diverse array of wildlife, including large – and small – predators. On the 7th of March 2024, CCB’s farmer competition winners from the women’s category enjoyed their winning prize – an all-inclusive safari to Wilderness Safaris’ Little Vumbura camp in the Okavango Delta! Both ladies enjoyed the experience greatly and expressed their gratitude for the trip. “The guides were incredible, the accommodation was good, and the food was excellent. Everything about the trip was thrilling and we would love to come back one day for more, to get that feeling one more time,” they said with excitement. Our farmers’ competition was aimed at inspiring Botswana’s farmers to farm more sustainably and in a way that promote human-wildlife coexistence. The prizes of safari trips for the winner and runner up for each of the three categories (women, youth and integrated farmers) aimed to help inspire these farmers further and to help them fall even more in love with Botswana’s wildlife and beautiful and unique environment. This Sunday, 7th April, 2024 is Tutsi Genocide Memorial Day in Rwanda – if you’re as old as me you will remember the total horror of it on our relatively limited media outlets 30 years ago. It’s quite remarkable to see how the amazing Rwandan people and this country have evolved into one of the most inviting and vibrant countries in Africa. Tourism has definitely played an important in this and the level of accommodation there is world class with some very top notch lodges to visit. In the past, visiting the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park has been the main pull, but over the last few years there has been impressive expansion. You can now combine visiting the gorillas in the west with a more traditional game drive safari in Akagera National Park in the east where the wildlife has flourished under the protection of African Parks over the last 20 years. It is Africa’s largest protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species in Rwanda. And Nyungwe Forest National Park in the south allows you to slow down the pace a bit and have some R&R at the end of your trip, or do a canopy walk through the incredible forest, visit tea plantations or just have some spa treatments. You can trek to see one of the two habituated chimpanzee groups or look for the other 13 primates that live here as well. Let’s not forget Kigali, the capital, which is worth spending a couple of nights in to enjoy the lively art and creative scene, eat at some great restaurants and ofcourse visit the very intensely moving Kigali Genocide Memorial. Where else in the world are the people required to take part in the national cleanup day, Umuganda, on the last Saturday of every month?! A first photo dump of an incredible first day of game driving in the Liyanti Concession where our camp is located. We were lucky enough to see many animals on our safari, including elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, and even rarely sighted wild dogs. Desert Elephants in Namibia are primarily found in the northwestern regions, including the Kunene River area, Caprivi Strip, and parts of Damaraland. These ellies have adapted to surviving with limited water resources. They can travel long distances in search of water and are known to have a remarkable memory for locating water source like digging for water in dry riverbeds and using their knowledge of seasonal food sources. On safari the guides love to track wildlife - especially lions. The ground in Botswana is very sandy so the footprints are easy to see and guides can tell how old they are, and the direction of movement. On this day we had been following some tracks and came upon an area where there were lots of lion and hyena tracks. The guide said "Somebody had a party here! - let's drive in the bush and see what we can find". Now, you don't always need tracks to find these guys - in this case it was a smell. The lions (3 of them) had found a deceased elephant in the trees and, well, were being lions. Close encounters with elephants: Just wrapped up a couple days at magical Duma Tau, a Wilderness luxury camp on the Linyanti in northern Botswana. They could’ve called it “elephant wonderland.” These beautiful beasts swam across the lagoon in front of my place and passed close enough to the villa that I could hear their stomachs gurgling as they crashed by outside. Game drives brought us within inches of these smart, sensitive creatures. Magnificent and mesmerizing and thrilling, especially the adrenaline-inducing mock charges from the young bulls, trying to prove themselves. Red Lechwe are found in marshy areas and savannas of Africa where they are an important herbivore of aquatic plants. They use the knee-deep water as protection from predators. In the lush tropical jungle with the evocative name of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, another representative of the endangered species, the Mountain Gorilla, came into the world. The freshly minted mother, along with her little offspring, hid in the dense bushes. It was there that other family members, named Nshongi, came to greet the new relative. The few days old gorilla patiently endured the ritual of welcome, observing with its still hazy eyes the hands moving over its frail body. It was calm, reassured by the gentle yet strong hands of its mother. I observed these incredible moments from a safe distance, captivated by the tenderness of these large and powerful animals. . Świeżo upieczona matka, wraz ze swoim małym potomkiem, schowała się w gęstych krzakach. To tam, kolejni członkowie rodziny, nazwanej Nshongi, przyszli przywitać się z nowym krewniakiem. Kilkudniowy gorylek cierpliwie znosił rytuał powitania, obserwując swoimi jeszcze mętnymi oczami, przesuwające się nad jego wątłym ciałem dłonie. Był spokojny, a poczucie bezpieczeństwa zapewniały mu czułe, ale jednocześnie silne dłonie matki.
