Here’s my little ‘Spring Green’ posy (with a hint of coral) for @weeklyposychallenge. The beautiful narcissus is called ‘Night Cap’, it’s lovely for arranging and blends well with the soft cream colour of tulips ‘Spring Green’, ‘Green Spirit’ and ‘Green Star’. They have repeat flowered from last year which is very helpful for the theme this week! Wednesday Weekly Posy Challenge 17.04 A lovely change in colour palette this week with creams, blues, soft apricots and oranges. This was a particularly fragrant collection of blooms with rosemary and scented narcissi and featuring the last of the leucojum and forget-me-not. In the cutting garden, different varieties of ranunculus and tulips are arriving in trickles and there are buds on the sweet William and delphinium whilst everything else appears to be taking its own time, so it’s anyone’s guess what the next few weeks’ posies will contain. First tulips cut from the garden yesterday. These are last years tulips that I took out of my patio pots, stored over Winter then replanted in one of my raised beds in the Autumn. My view is that if they reflower it’s a bonus and I can cut them and bring indoors. This is my entry for this week’s @weeklyposychallenge. An arrangement of bergenias in this vase. One of the ways in which I really benefit from this challenge is by having my eyes opened to the ways in which I can arrange the flowers that are currently growing in my garden without needing to plant more. These bergenias are a case in point. They have been flowering for a while and are a great height for this jug. I don’t think that I would have considered them as a cut flower without this challenge. This is an easy way to maintain my goal of growing all of my own cut flowers. Woke up to a very frosty sight this morning. I have yet to go and investigate the greenhouse but I covered all ‘my babies’ with frost cloths and made a heater with a candle covered by two terracotta pots so 🤞🤞. Do you grow chrysanthemums? This is only my second year but I love them. They come into their own just as the dahlias are finishing prolonging the time I can still cut flowers for arrangements. I bought them as cuttings and they did really well last year. This Spring having overwintered them in the greenhouse I took some cuttings as you are then meant to grow these on as the parent plants don’t do as well in their second year. Unfortunately I didn’t do very well with the cuttings, the slugs had a field day so I planted out the parent plants and they have produced flowers, probably not as many and not as big as the first year. No frosts here yet so they are staying out a bit longer and then I will move into the greenhouse. I will try again next year taking cuttings and intend to buy some new ones too. Having watched Georgie Newbery of @commonfarmflowers on YouTube create a Dutch 17th century art inspired still life, or nature morte for Halloween, I decided to have a go. She encouraged us to cut the last flowers even if they might not last long, to actively look for imperfection, battered leaves, seed heads, things that tell the story of the season. Back from our annual week in the Lake District. We had a lovely time with our besties and eldest daughter, her partner and youngest granddaughter. Caramelised peach, silky smooth cream and rich dark chocolate - ‘All the colours’ of a delicious dessert 😂 Celebrating the awesomeness that is the Chantilly Peach snapdragon - I totally take back my earlier comments where I may have suggested that I’m less keen on the Chantilly types. They seem to have improved throughout the summer and have flowered almost continuously. The stems are thinner than other types but I have found them very useful for the smaller posies that I often make. I’ve combined them with two roses that I love cutting - David Austin’s ‘Emily Bronte’ & ‘Pride & Prejudice’ by Harkness Roses. The two chocolatey foliages are Hibiscus ‘Mahogany Splendour’ grown from seed and Physocarpus opulifolius ‘ANDRE’ (one of the few deciduous shrubs that I keep in a pot). I really like the warmth of this combination - it’s so interesting how using a different foliage can give the same flowers a very different feel. Two lots of flowers from the garden. I also cut two vases of sweet peas so the house was full of flowers last night. I was so disappointed that I couldn’t entertain my book club girls outside. We managed a pre supper drink for all of about 10 minutes before the rain came! I was pleased they did see the garden albeit briefly but it wasn’t how I’d like as Mr H has been unable to cut the grass since we got back from holiday as just too wet! A bright and summery mix for this weeks ‘new to me’ @weeklyposychallenge prompt. This is a jam jar version of a larger bouquet I made last summer - I’ve chosen different varieties that are more suited to growing on the patio but kept the colour mix similar. New to me are Liberty Classic Bronze snapdragons - they have a similar colour to the huge Potomac orange snaps I grew last year but are a good size for patio pots and the right proportions for small posies. Also new to me are the cute zinnia ‘Aztec Burgundy Bicolor’ and achillea ‘The Pearl’. I have used a couple of last years favourites too -zingy nicotiana ‘Perfume Lime’ and phlox ‘Blushing Bride’ - both great in pots. This ‘summer party’ mix has a great vase life too! Just had to use the dancing stems of nigella ‘Delft Blue’ this week. Some of the flowers have a little less of the blue markings but seemed to fit perfectly in this buttermilk colour scheme. I have mostly used flowers from the patio patch here so all shorter stems - Sonnet White snapdragons, tanacetum ‘Snowball’, Achillea’The Pearl’, white statice and calendula ‘Snow Princess’. It’s very easy to add more to this mix - any white flowers can go in, I’ve used a few white sweet peas, cosmos & ammi as well. I’ve included mint as foliage - the fresh scent is just so lovely. I never seem to have enough of it though - bigger pot next year! I decided to ‘dedicate’ a bit more time to this weeks @weeklyposychallenge and actually get the flower frog and chicken wire out for the first time in ages! Also I was keen to do something more with the large quantity of larkspur ‘Misty Lavender’ that I have grown in my largest tub - it actually flowered a lot better than I’d imagined! I couldn’t resist cutting a few creamy roses from the garden too - I think they are ‘Pride & Prejudice’ which I bought at Hampton Court Flower Show last year, although I’ve annoyingly lost the label… wonder what I’ll come back with this year- v excited to be going this weekend! Stocks and Sweet William grown from seed, also the Wrinkled Cress which I’ve grown for the first time to add to my choice of foliage for arrangements We visited The Dorset Water Lily Co. yesterday. They were very busy getting ready to go to Hampton Court flower show but were happy to advise on the purchase of a second water lily for our water bowl. They take into account the size of your ‘pond’ and depth of water. Being only a metre in diameter we have a pygmy lily but I wanted something a little bigger and a different colour. Not quite the ‘summer haze’ I’d imagined with loads of achillea and grasses but a nod to it and some sunset colours in the ‘Buff Pygmy’ calendulas. This years ‘Buff Pygmy’ have slightly more variation in flower colour but still the same fluffy flowers with all those wonderful layers of petals. Also in the mix is apricot statice, achillea ‘summer pastels’ and Chantilly peach snapdragons, along with my patio patch trio of grasses - briza maxima, lagurus ovatus and hordeum jubatum. This is why I enjoy growing my own flowers, a big exuberant vase full of 9 different plants. The stars are Sweet Williams, a rather old fashioned flower and only my second year growing but now I wouldn’t be without them. They are a biennial so am going to sow seed this weekend for next years flowers. They are very hardy and easy to grow. They will be planted out in September and happily went through last winter with no attention and are happy to be squished into little gaps in the borders and then make a lovely splash of colour when they flower. They last well too as a cut flower. Also in the vase are Orlaya and my first Stocks both grown from seed, along with Leucanthemum, Geranium, Borage, Nepeta, Euphorbia and Alchemilla Mollis. We seem to finally have had a little rain overnight. After quite a tough week am looking forward to just pottering in the garden. ‘Pale & Interesting’ for @weeklyposychallenge - lots of pale in the cutting patch with a whole tub of white sweet williams - most definitely will be growing them again, probably every year - they are lovely! The interesting is perhaps the bupleurum ‘Griffithii’ grown in a 30L tub for the first time this year. I love how the flowers catch the light and liven up this all white bouquet. The leaves have a wonderful shape too. The lovely ribbon picks up the colour - I’m such a fan of Catherine’s ‘Creative Ribbons’ - do check out her page @catherine__rye for the fabulous colour themes she has put together. Other components: Nigella ‘Miss Jekyll White’, Orlaya grandiflora, sweet pea ‘Memorial Flight’ - I consider them my cutting patch essentials! Peony ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ is in the ground rather than a tub - she actually seems very happy despite our heavy clay. If you are looking for a peony I’d definitely recommend her- amazing fragrance & has bloomed prolifically even in a partly shaded location.
