The Miena Cider Gums, or weeping trees, are rare and special. These trees are only found within a 20km radius of Miena, a small village in Tasmania's Central Highlands. The trees have evolved to be the most frost tolerant of all the eucalypts, but since the early 90's, have faced gradual decline, leading to their current listing as an endangered species. The Miena Cider Gums have a rich cultural history of use by the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, who would drink the rich sugary sap or 'cider' that leaks from crevices in the trunk. While on the subject of Mies van der Rohe, whose influence more than any other architect can be seen at the Pestorius Sweeney House, it’s important to remember that Mies’ integration of plantings, whether it be trees, hedging, vines or creepers, was carefully considered and played an important role in shaping the experience of his spaces. For example, Mies cleverly balanced the severe rectilinear geometries of his built spaces with the softening effects of creepers and trees with a weeping habit. It’s not surprising then that a similar strategy unfolded here, especially given that the landscape architect who Geoffrey Pestorius worked with on the important garden spaces, Arne Fink, was a German migrant to Australia in the mid-1950s and who surely was familiar with the Miesian precedents. Fink experimented with indigenous plants and didn’t always get the right species for the climate. Originally, he planted an Agonis Flexuosa, the weeping Myrtle tree, in this location. However, this beautiful Western Australian native, with its long thin leaves, didn’t cope well with Brisbane’s humidity. We eventually settled on an equally elegant indigenous species, this time from the northern regions where humidity is even more pronounced: the Leptospermum madidum, or weeping ti tree. Tam nepatīk temeratūras maiņa, nepatīk caurvējš, nepatīk ventilācijas sistēmas, nepatīk vietas maiņa, nepatīk ja uz to paskaties ne tā. 😅 Jokoju. Visbiežākā problēma arī šim fikusam, daudz izteiktāk nekā citiem ir sezonālā apkure. Augs ļoti ātri nobirst, tad tajā, kas atlicis mēdz ieperināties tīklērce (vai abi reizē). Šis noteikti nav " uz sezonu iznesīšu ārā" augs, tad tas būs tikai uz sezonu augs. Pēc nobiršanas tas jāturpina smidzināt pa zariem, nedrīkst to pārliet, jo bezlapu stāvoklī augs neuzņem tik daudz mitrumu + ja tā ir ziema, tas jālaista jau tā mazāk, lai nepūst, jo nav atbilstoša apgaismojuma. Augu var griezt, tikai jāuzmanās no fikusiem raksturīgās piensulas. Lately I found a real passion for ficus bonsai. This species in the western world are often looked down as material, because of its need to be placed indoors most of the time, due to its tropical origins. This specimen from @pacificbonsaimuseum shared by @californiabonsaisociety is an impressive representation of what can be achieved with this kind of tree. Incredibly lush and vigorous, standing strongly with a beautiful nebari at its base, showcasing unusual round leaves.
