Today’s walk was around Tyrell’s Wood between the showers . It was beautifully green with the sound of a woodpecker overhead. We also were fortunate enough to catch sight of a Roe deer gambolling through a wheat field but sadly no photo … Wildflowers we saw were Cow Parsley, wild bluebell, yellow archangel ( dead nettle) and some glorious early purple wild orchids . DAY 3: Sendero Historico (GR1) - 26km. We wake up to the wind barrelling across the open porch we've moved the tent to. Gusts find their way inside and whip the tent fabric against our heads. We hunker further down in our bags and wait. Amazingly, by 7.45am the wind just stops still. The sun peers over the mountain and floods the porch and suddenly all is well. We eat our breakfast basking in its rays and pack up and stretch. Then it's a three hour climb up to a high col via a mirador for Pico Gratal. The sky is piercingly blue and the mountains look so green and friendly. There is no one around and we can only hear bird song. Then it's a long tricky descent to the valley floor and a few kilometres along a track to tiny Arguis. We were hoping for a meal but nothing is open and no one is there! We sit on a bench in the square and make our new pasta combo - orzo, mushroom soup, and that 1980s cupboard safe grated parmesan! It's surprisingly delicious. Then it's another climb into the next valley where we skirt the abandoned village of Belsue and stop at beautiful sandstone coloured swimming pools where Andy has a dip - I'm too cold so only dip my feet. We finally find an abandoned chapel with a high terrace overlooking the surrounding mountains where we eat our noodle dinner and pitch up for the night, right next to an apple tree in blossom. DAY 2: Sendero Historico (GR1) - 25km. We made it through the night a little battered by wind but intact. It is absolutely freezing though and we make our breakfast while still in our sleeping bags and then we put on all our clothes. It's an easy day of walking along tracks to ease us in and we see so many vultures up above, riding on the thermals. We get to Loarre by 11am and find a bar open so we have a coffee and take a break - noticing they have a shrine to pigs 😄. We end up chatting to a pilgrim hiking a camino to Santiago over two months, having started in Barcelona. Impressive as she's 23 and it's her first ever long distance walk - yet another camino route that we might consider. We manage to buy some bread and cheese from the bakery, as well as a bag of his leftover pastries - they look like yum yums but made with honey. The sun comes out and it feels glorious to sit in the square and eat fresh food, feeding the local cat our leftovers. A fruit van even pops through town so we can buy oranges. Then it's off to the next villages - Anies and Bolea. We make a pasta dinner in the square in Bolea and then hike up into the hills where we camp outside an abandoned convent next to what looks like a refuge with a huge porch (but it's locked). It comes in handy when we're woken by gale force winds at 2am that are flattening the tent. We have to get out, unpeg and drag the entire thing into the porch where there's enough shelter to stop the poles snapping. Cozy canines (February 2024) It was a winter day. It feels like the past few days have been the coldest this year. I was out shopping for some art supplies when a heartwarming scene caught my eye in the main market street. Four stray dogs huddled together for warmth. Despite the harsh conditions, these resilient canines sought comfort in each other's company and create a touching tableau of unity in the face of a harsh winter day. DAY 1: Sendero Historico (GR1) - 6km. We have to wait until 4pm for our train to the start of the trail at Riglos, so the morning is spent finding gas for our stove (not as easy as it sounds, we had to visit two Decathlon stores and get a tram out of town to a bigger outlet) and eating lots of fruit on the basis it will soon be out of reach. Indeed, our guidebook tells us that there are no shops for the first 180km which will be about a week. There will be some bars and maybe the odd bakery but not many of those either. So we are each carrying heavy food bags to compensate. After a bit more tapas for lunch, we walk the 2.5km to Miraflores station to catch our train. Only when we're on does the inspector tell us the train is being diverted to Huesca and we'll need to get a replacement bus. Luckily, it's much better than the replacement buses you get in the UK and all goes like clockwork - made easier, I'm sure, by the fact there's only four of us. We're actually the only ones left when we get to Riglos and by 6pm we're off. It starts with a bang as we see the unusual and spectacular Mallos de Riglos rocks and then do a short 6km climb up into the hills. We stop at an abandoned ermita and dramatic ruins on a bluff looking out over the expansive green valley below, where we hunker down next to a big bush, trying to pitch our tent out of the full force of the 40mph winds. A couple of French camper vans park on the grass next to us trying to escape the wind too. DAY 0: Sendero Historico (GR1) - It's time to start our longest hike since the PCT in 2019! The Sendero Historico is actually a 1250km-long monster of a trail in northern Spain with over 39,000 metres of ascent or 4.5 climbs of Everest, but we're only doing half - 650km - so we can squeeze it into one month. Our part meanders through the foothills of the Pyrenees (the Prepirinio), covering Aragon and Catalonia. We start in Riglos, an hour north of Zaragoza, and end at the Mediterranean sea in Sant Martí d’Empúries. Our journey into Zaragoza goes smoothly and we get into town by 5.30pm, just in time to join what looks like a mass passegiata around town. We realise it's the Goya festival (Zaragoza is famous for its links with Goya) and there are plenty of festivities occurring all over town. We soak up the atmosphere, see the famous and enormous Cathedral and medieval stone bridge, and then we amble around the Tubo - the tapas area of the old town - where we get a couple of beers and some tasty little snacks for dinner. Baked salted cod, a huge potato croquette and a filled egg. Sleepy, we are in bed by 10pm as the fireworks start up! Deeside Way, day 3 (20 April): Banchory to Drumoak. Beware the body snatchers! Heading out of Banchory we pass St Ternan Cemetary and discover the restored watch tower which tells us a macabre story. Grave robbers would take newly buried bodies and sell them to medical schools for use in anatomy classes. Watch towers were built so families could pay guards to keep watch over the buried dead for around six weeks. The practice of body snatching reached its peak in the 1820s, before the 1832 Anatomy Act brought the grisly activity to an end by allowing anatomy schools to use the dead bodies of unclaimed workhouse paupers. Once again heading along the route of the old railway, we come to a restored section of the Royal Deeside Railway. Ah, the romance of steam engine travel. We’re immediately over the road into the wonderful Crathes Castle estate. And what a history. The Burnett family were first gifted the land in 1323 by Robert The Bruce in thanks for their support during the fight for Scottish independence. Completed in 1596, the Burnetts continuously occupied the castle for an incredible 350 years before giving it to the National Trust for Scotland in 1951 (likely due to the unmanageable maintenance costs. Sadly so many great houses were lost during this time so it’s wonderful it survived). We loved the story, while simultaneously giving a sharp intake of breath, of the Queen Anne wing which was built in the 1680s to accommodate Sir Thomas Burnett and his wife Margaret as they proceeded to have 21 children in 22 years. There were so many fun stories, so a visit is highly recommended. On our way again and we encountered the fading past with remains of the old Crathes railway station before passing the Park Estate, the ancient hunting estate of Robert The Bruce. Before we knew it we were in Drumoak. Today’s walk was along the footpath that crosses the railway bridge before circling back onto the main road back into the village . It was bright but extremely cold ( I had my big coat on ) . The hedgerows were dotted with a variety of wildflowers along with red dead and white nettles ( in addition to the common ones ) as well as garlic mustard with its distinctive white flowers .
