Every summer Alachua County families cool off at our local springs. Who remembers swimming at Magnesia Springs near Hawthorne? Magnesia Springs were enjoyed by residents as early as the 1880s but it wasn't until the late 1920s that they became a tourist attraction. G.H. and Nellie Kelly opened the springs on June 1, 1929, and expanded the pool in 1932. G.H. sold the springs in 1964 to the Reber family, who operated it until 1974. My sister sent me some articles about history from historyfacts.com. They were so interesting that I subscribed myself. It comes once a day. I thought the following was really interesting. I never knew about the compass. “If you happen to find yourself lost in the deserts of Egypt, you might want to seek out the Great Pyramid of Giza to find your way home. The four corners of the Great Pyramid are aligned with the four cardinal directions, and with such a high degree of accuracy that experts are still trying to puzzle out how the ancient Egyptians pulled it off. The pyramid’s alignment is accurate within one-fifteenth of a degree, a measure that’s difficult to achieve even with modern technology, and especially for a structure so massive (in its prime, the Great Pyramid stood 481 feet tall). Historians theorize that ancient engineers may have used shadows cast by the sun or the location of stars in the night sky to orient the massive structure. However, to this day, the exact method the Egyptians used to pull off this stunning feat of architecture and engineering remains a mystery.” Country painters love history…..

I learned a lot from my art professors back in art school. One of the best ideas they gave me was not to be overly precious about my art materials. One of my professors used to buy Rives BFK (high quality rag paper) by the ream. It is still my favorite paper. It is quite expensive. He never let his supply get down to just a few papers. He said that having one or two sheets left made them precious and that would thwart his creative process. It would make him stiff and worried about making mistakes. If he had a big stack of paper, he didn’t have to worry. My painting professors would do the same with paints, canvas and brushes. They would put out plenty of paint on the pallet before each session. They never worried about waste. They had jars and jars of brushes, and new ones for the future. These were very valuable lessons for me as an artist. To this day I have large inventories of brushes, canvas and paints, and frames, ready for use. I wait for sales to stock up. I never think of being miserly about my materials. You would be surprised at how much this enhances my creative process. I never worry about messing up because I have plenty of materials to try again. The reward is far more valuable than the cost of materials. I am grateful for many lessons I learned in art school. Country painters have a wonderful life....

I have a lot of musculoskeletal issues that became worse about four years ago. It has affected my energy level. Prior to that, I painted about eight hours a day. Now I paint about 2 and 1/2 hours a day. The oddity is that it hasn’t seemed to hurt the quality of my work. People seem to continue to enjoy it. I keep lots of photos of older work. I can’t see the old ones as better than my current work. I think I enjoy it more now. I think I like knowing that I have limited time each day to stand in front of the easel. It has taught me to be much more patient and to not rush through paintings just because I can. I spend more time at my design table now, which is never a bad idea. This country painter is lucky to continue to paint my way through life……..

Award-winning author Rick Kilby utilized our postcard collections for his book "Florida’s Healing Waters: Gilded Age Mineral Springs, Seaside Resorts, and Health Spas" (University Press of Florida, 2020), which received the silver medal for Florida nonfiction from the Florida Book Awards and the Florida Historical Society’s Stetson Kennedy Award. "The Matheson’s array of postcard art has been important in my work in large part due to the size and depth of the collection. There are postcards from every county in Florida and they cover a variety of subjects in each region. Going through the postcard collection is like going to restaurant where everything on the restaurant looks delicious. I want them all! One of my favorite postcards shows the early wooden springhouse on the Suwannee River at White Springs in north Florida. In the foreground Spanish moss hangs from live oak limbs making a wonderful frame for the image. On the opposite bank a dapper gentleman in a white suit walks along the river. I liked it so much that I used it as a two-page spread at the beginning of the book. The importance of digitization is that it makes research easier and much more accessible. In the past it required going through box after box of postcards looking for the perfect image. Then it required waiting until the staff had time to make scans. Then it required downloading from a website that could handle large file transfers. Digitization makes that all one convenient step." #WhyILoveGNV #TheAmazingGive
