Went on my first caving trip with Inner Space Cavern’s wild cave tour! I’ve been considering doing caving for a number of months and decided to take a dive into the wild cave to see if I had the stuff to do it. There were plenty of clothes-tearing belly-crawls, wall-to-wall traversing, glorious mud pits and jagged rock slips, and every challenging squeeze was more fun than the last! The tour was about 4 hours and took us through a mile and a half of crawling through beautiful undeveloped tunnels in 75-80° temps. Easily the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever had. I didn’t really know anything about this National Park except for the fact it had a cave! And boy it did not disappoint! So cool, so pretty! Tip #2 for #TripTipTuesday is: Know Your Limits During the summer, we offer four different types of cave tours. Each with a different level of difficulty and time commitment. ✅ Discovery Tour - The easiest and only accessible tour offered at the monument. Spend 20-minutes in one room of the cave learning about the geology, history, and continued exploration of the cave. ✅ Scenic Tour - The most popular of the four tours, spend 1-hour and 20-minutes walking a 1/2 mile through the cave and completing 734 stairs. Please note that this tour is moderate to strenuous based on personal ability and each person must complete all stairs on the own. ✅ Historic Lantern Tour - Only offered during the summer, take a step back in time on this 1-hour and 40-minute tour. Please note that this tour is strenuous. Along the path you will stoop for several feet, climb up and down steep ladders, walk through confined spaces, and carry your only source of light. The minimum age to participate is 8-years old. ✅ Wild Caving Tour - Only travelling approximately 2/3 of a mile, this tour takes 4 hours to complete. This is the most strenuous guided tour in the entire National Park Service. Participants must be in good physical condition and are required to pass through a 8-1/2 inch X 24-inch space before entering the tour and be at least 16 years of age. Did you know Natural Tunnel State Park offers Wild Cave tours at Bolling and Pannell Cave? Signed up for the Bolling Cave tour, the tour is 2 hours and you will get dirty/crawl through crevasses. Started out with a 0.5 mile hike up to the cave entrance. At the entrance, we turned on our headlamps and enter the caves through a small hole on the side of the mountain. Primitive caves have all the features of the subterranean world – speleothems (stalactites, flowstone, soda straws, and columns), lots of real mud, and sometimes even cave critters. There are no special effects/lights or sidewalks in the caves. Proceed with caution, the cave floor is very slippery. The guides (Kenley/Mac) were very knowledgeable about all things caves and prioritize your safety.
