Couple of jobs from this week: First pic was of the 30 inch x 30 inch x 115 foot long tunnel that I had to run a new water main through today. Second was what I found on an air conditioner repair. Customer had stated that the ac motor had been running backwards and very slowly all winter. It really took some effort to get his jaws off that wire. I had one of the coolest life experiences yesterday while caving in New Mexico. The caving ran 2nd. Meet Phyllis. Phyllis was our guide yesterday with her friend Amy. She met us in her heavy-duty 4x4 SUV and drove us an hour over roads that would make the Baja 500 seem tame. Then she packed up and lead us down a hill of prickly pear and Ocotillo to a gated hole in the ground. She then proceeded to take us on a 4 hour underground adventure, lowering ourselves further into the earth on handlines, over, under, and through things where I seriously doubted I'd fit. She showed boundless energy, an awesome upbeat disposition, and was quite funny. Oh, and she thoroughly kicked my ass. I've been stretching and working out kinks today while Phyllis had to get home cause she was making a solo 10hr drive to Denver to visit her sister. Phyllis is 83. She has redefined the term badass for me. I'm inspired to be more like Phyllis. Thursday throwback to 2008. My buddy Marc Singer and I Decompressing after a long dive in very green water conditions. The big tube in the background was a battery pack for our heated vest. Turns out both of us had broken a wire in our vest, so we neither one had any heat, with 14 hours of total decompression…… It was a very long, slow, cold ascent. This past weekend was incredibly busy with a wedding and family get togethers in kentucky. Even with the hectic 3 days and 10 hour drive we managed to stop and see some national parks. More pictures to come of that the next week or so. This is at Carter caves national park. There are a bunch of caves both guided and self guided. This one is horn cave caused by a river that ate its way through the rock and tunneled underground. It was a very cool experience with a beautiful 1.5 mile hike. 🇬🇧 Nature: The Supreme Sculptor Every crack on the Earth's surface holds a deeper mystery, yet much of what the earth conceals remains largely secret, with long-sealed entrances and spiders guarding forgotten passages. To explore is to discover, and in our recent speleological survey in the karst area between Pignone and Quaratica, we did just that. 1) Exiting the Grande Grotta di Pignone, a return to the light through an opening nestled between trees and rock. 2) The lasting impact of time in the cave: an abandoned rope now crystallized among calcareous concretions. 3) Within the meanders of the earth: a narrow passage in the Sant'Antonio Sinkhole. The rope in the second photo shows signs of crystallization, likely caused by prolonged exposure to mineral-rich dripping waters in the caves. Over time, these minerals deposit on the rope and harden, forming layers of calcareous concretions, similar to those that form stalactites and stalagmites. Mycelium mine One of the biggest underground chamber we've been in. The concrete structure with the rock gives a heavy brutalist vibe, a surreal wall to paint, reminds me of a cyberpunk underground base. A lot of the original graffs in there are from the early 2000s and some small scribbles from even earlier ( i found one from 1983). Most of it are from local graffiti writers from that time but also a lot of punk graffitis too, all the old punks know about that tunnel, people used to party there and squat there. The orange tag i went over was a "bad religion"...the spot was too good to skip but i kinda wanted to leave it there too...i love that band but everything is changing all the time anyway i guess. It was fun meeting other graffers when painting in there. Read post for deets!🦇👀 📍Located within Newberry National Volcanic Monument, this site receives an average of 70,000 visitors a season (early May to September 15th). To help provide a better experience for visitors, help protect the sensitive bat habitat, and to be able to provide guaranteed parking, a timed entry reservation system was put in place. ⏳About the Timed Entry System: Timed reservations for Lava River Cave are available on Recreation.gov. Each timeslot allows access to the cave for two hours. Beginning April 26, 2024, 50% of tickets will be available on a rolling 7-day booking window. The remaining 50% will be available on a 24-hour booking window. A total of 6 daily entry blocks will be available every hour on the hour starting at 9 a.m. with the last block at 2 p.m. 🎟️ Valid Recreation Pass Required In addition to a timed reservation ticket, a valid recreation pass is required at the cave. A Northwest Forest Pass annual, day pass, or America the Beautiful Interagency Pass is required at Lava River Cave. Passes are sold onsite. This is the beautiful chapel inside Callao Cave. The limestone cave’s entrance chamber was converted into a chapel by the locals because of its cathedral-like interior and the natural stream of light coming from a large opening at the chamber’s ceiling. Callao Cave is one of Cagayan province’s most famous tourist attractions. It is located in a small town called Peñablanca, just a 30-minute drive from Cagayan’s capital city, Tuguegarao. The cave has seven chambers and its mouth can be reached by climbing 183 concrete steps from the tourist reception area. Aside from “The Chapel”, Callao Cave is also popular for being the site where the oldest known remains of an early human species in the Philippines were found. The Oodles of Noodles infeeder¹ went small (by Kentucky standards), netting only a few hundred feet of new passage. After mapping for a few hours, the survey team left it as an unfinished lead that needs some hammering to be passable -- low priority for a cave that still has plenty of walking leads elsewhere! There was also some chimneying that needs to be done at the start of the new canyon passage (note to self: don't forget). Hitting that will be a very slimy affair because we got into a weirdly dolomitic layer (boooo...). Although the new passage discovered was a bit underwhelming, the information I was able to deduced about the speleogenesis² of the greater Oodles of Noodles Dome Complex was quite valuable. The active water is certainly unrelated to the overall formation of the dome complex and there are still multiple high leads in this area. On the paleo³ upstream side, the passage should be leading several hundred feet or more to the next known active infeeder area (named The Monsoon Room), and the paleo downstream could be significant going passage overhead of the known passage. Oh, lastly: we did get a pretty ~150-ft drop out of the whole endeavor, too. Day 7 of my ramble through the North Island of New Zealand was chock full to finish this marathon strong, and I’m definitely not crying about it ending tomorrow 😅 Today started with a few hours of spelunking at Waitomo to see some impressive stalactites, stalactites and, of course, GLOW WORMS! They don’t exactly come out in photos, so just roll with it. I then stopped into a bird zoo to see some Kiwi Birds, which were so cool! But they didn’t allow photography because the birds are too sensitive, hence their conspicuous absence from today’s photo dump. Made a quick stop to capture a plant I’ve seen all over North Island, the tall stems with fanned tops. I’ve loved seeing them on all my drives and had to take some photos to remember them. I then made a stop into the Hamilton Gardens, which were just outstanding, cannot recommend highly enough! I’ve now arrived back into Auckland for my last night before flying back home tomorrow. I’m off to cap the trip off with a celebratory drink (or two 😉). 🏆🏅My 22nd National Park @carlsbadcavernsnps is likely where your darkest dreams come to live once you wake up from a nightmare 👷♀️🧚♀️🐉 👻 . 🎵🎶 ...it's a very very mad world...🎵 That beautifully haunting song by Michael Andrews replayed and reverberated in the underground crevices of my mind as my body sauntered through the ambient lit natural cavernous halls crafted by the unknown parts of a past life consciousness. So outer worldly here - although we were actually more "inner" worldly being 755 ft deep down 🫠 Beauty is cave deep 👻💋 . Edit 📷: some people have asked me how I got my cave photos to illuminate so well with myself in the picture. If you know anything about caves/dark places, it can be quite complicated to highlight yourself in the picture when with night mode on. One little trick I use is shining my headlamp with a dim level setting onto my face when I take a cave picture. Then it takes a whole bunch of photoshop chop skills to lighten up the whole photo! . 💞 So much to say, way too many pix, I think I'll save for a reel, all I know is you gotta visit here at least once 🙌. . #nationalparkgeek #spelunking #exploremore #creepycute
