Very beginning of the hike… If I didn’t know any better (and I very much do), I would say that this looks like snow. But it’s droppings from the white, fuzzy buds of this tree. Then, it wasn’t long and I realized that not only do the potential limitations of my knee make me the obvious choice to lead and set pace for our hikes, but it means I am the one dealing with webs crossing the path 😆, while @jamitchell18 gets to focus on and notice the little things like ladybugs and caterpillars and the one butterfly we saw near the end of the hike. Berzencén, 2024. március 19-én a Vadaskerti-árok környékén találtam rá a Süntök elszáradt termésére (Echinocystis lobata / Wild Cucumber). 🦔🎃 A süntök a tökvirágúak (Cucurbitales) rendjébe és a tökfélék (Cucurbitaceae) családjába tartozó faj. Nemzetségének egyetlen faja. A süntök többágú kacsaival felkapaszkodó, akár 7-8 méter magasra felfutó, vékony szárú, legfeljebb a nóduszokban szőrös, egyéves növény. A termés 3-4 centiméter hosszú, hengeres, puha, tüskés, belsejét, a négy mag körül rostos szövet tölti ki. Őshazája Északkelet-Amerika. Kanada déli részein is őshonos. Első európai adata 1904-ből való, hazánk területén pedig először Debrecenben 1913-ban jegyezték le. Manapság nálunk az egész országban megtalálható, csak a Kisalföldön és a Duna–Tisza közének déli részén ritka. Életformája T4 (nyárutói egyéves), életideje a vegetációs időszakban mintegy százharminc nap, általában májustól októberig. A növény csírázása májusban indul el, virágzás pedig júliustól. Önmegporzás is lehetséges, de inkább rovarmegporzás jellemzi, a terméseket a víz is terjeszti. A nővirágok elvirágzás után akár már tizennégy napon belül teljes méretű termést hozhatnak. A termések egy-hat magot tartalmaznak, leggyakrabban négyet. A magvak kihullanak, amikor a termés kiszárad. Hazájában az észak-amerikai őslakosok számára „panácea”, azaz jó reumára, lázra, emellett afrodiziákum, abortívum, felhasználták magjait gombként, gyöngyként és terméséből halbódító lét készítettek. This wild cucumber (marah macrocarpa) was here when we moved in growing wild. It’s doing a fabulous job suppressing the weeds that are also growing wild on the slope past our fence. It always makes me happy to see the natural habitat winning. I also threw some wildflower seeds in the dirt and they’d holding their own. Hopefully with careful removal of the weeds this slope can slowly convert back to natives. But the cucumber is doing the work this year! #marahmacrocarpa #wildcucumber #californianativeplant

1. Last month I went to #joshuatreenationalpark and came across 10-15 of these viny, dead, cookie-monster shaped growths covering mesquite trees. I thought I had never seen them before and was curious. 2-4. Last weekend, I went back to a different part of the park and I saw a bunch. They were alive, and they were everywhere! Some were even covering chollas. I wondered if they were invasive, parasitic, taking over? Time to do some research. 5. @mark_quick was handy with a google, and provided the ID. WILD CUCUMBER! Nature's Garlands: Wild Cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) in its more lush summer form (previously featured in its winter finery). Also known as Bur or Prickly Cucumber, it is a native vine that can grow to an impressive size. It is an annual member of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, along with cucumbers, squash and melons. Its ripe fruits can have an appearance similar to a tiny spiky watermelon. They are most often spotted along riverbanks, thickets, and ditches. In the right conditions, these vines can grow upwards of 8 metres tall (25 or more feet). They have distinctive blossoms through the late summer, with panicles full of wispy 6-petaled male flowers. 5-petaled female flowers grow on the same plant as well, but are fewer in number and often hidden down amongst the leaves. The third photo in the deck was initially assumed to be the female flower of Echinocystis lobata (wild cucumber), but is actually a flower of a Sicyos angulatus (bur cucumber) that was intertwined in the patch of E. lobata. Incidentally both are members of the Curcubit family, and have a shared common name of Bur Cucumber (why latin nomenclature can be important in sharing findings!). Nature's garlands: the post-frost remnants of Wild Cucumber vines (Echinocystis lobata) are an interesting find this time of year, with their dainty tendrils and pufferfish-like husks. Inside the husks are a small loofah-like structure (they are related, both being in the gourd family) containing several relatively large seeds. Its genus name, Echinocystis comes from the Latin root words "echino" meaning spiny or prickly, and "cystis" meaning bladder or pouch - this season shows it is aptly named. Something new and different: wild cucumber. Who knew?! I came across a small patch of vines yesterday and was mesmerized. Apparently this native plant produces small inedible fruit (similar to mini watermelons with spikes), which then mature into seedpods, and finally end up as this mesh-like remnant once the seeds are shot out into the air (the seeds can be hurled up to 20 feet!). On your winter walks you might notice a soft rattle when passing the dry fruit husks of wild cucumber (Echinocystis lobata). The genus name, Echinocystis, describes the distinctive fruit and is derived from the Greek echinos, meaning "hedgehog", and cystis, meaning "bladder." The inedible fruit—all parts of the plant are mildly toxic to people and other animals—look like small, spiny cucumbers. Four large seeds are borne in two pithy chambers within each fruit. The pods explode when ripe, forcibly ejecting the seeds. Look for it in disturbed habitats, river or stream floodplains, forest edges, forests, shrublands, or thickets in all six New England States.
